Continuous monitoring of a computer network performance is probably the only solution which allows prompt identification of anomalous functioning conditions and knowledge of parameters on which to base speedy, effective recovery interventions. A number of tools for performance management already exist, but their effectiveness is limited as they are essentially inserted inside owner network management solutions. In the paper we describe the realization of PMt, a platform for the development of performance management applications for the control and real-time management of a heterogeneous computer network. PMt imposes an object-oriented view of the distributed system, defines a performance management design methodology which adapts well to really distributed system management and provides the user with a set of tools and services to assist him both in the design of new performance management applications and in actual management of the whole system.

The use of object-based programming techniques helps to reduce the cost of software development and maintenance, due to the benefits of reuse, information hiding and encapsulation. This is especially helpful in complex, real-time systems that are highly parallel and distributed, due to their magnitude. The paper presents a semi-preemption execution model of object-based real-time systems that simplifies reasoning about the quality of particular process-to-processor assignments. The model is used to define system properties such as inter-process parallelism, processor utilization and inter-processor communication. Additionally, we present an innovative assignment algorithm that incorporates feasibility constraints, and is guided by an objective that balances minimum communication against maximum parallelism. This work is part of a complete assignment and pre-run-time scheduling approach for distributedreal-time systems.< >

The TRON("The real-time Operating System Nucleus") Project is researching large-scale, highly functionally distributed systems for the "computing everywhere" environment of the 21st century, when computers will be used in practically every kind of object imaginable. The project started up officially in 1984. This paper looks at the background out of which the project emerged, and examines once again the aims and philosophy that guide it. It reviews what we have accomplished over the past decade, and looks ahead to future directions.< >

In recent years, the search for proper extensions of the basic object model to suit the hard-real-time application community has become a critical research issue. We present such an extension of the basic object model and it is called the RTO.k object model. A concrete syntactic structure and unambiguous execution semantics of the model are presented. A major attraction of this model is in that it is effective not only in the variable-degree abstraction of real-time (computer) control systems under design but also in the accurate representation of the application environments. A specification and implementation experiment that involved an application of the RTO.k structuring scheme to the development of an anti-missile defense system together with an application environment simulator was conducted. This experiment reinforced our belief that the RTO.k model had the necessary representational power and also offered an efficient and rigorous way to develop complex real-time systems.< >
