A model of a distributed real-time system which supports reasoning about the consistency and accuracy of real-time data and about the performance of real-time communication protocols is presented. The conventional object model is extended into a model of a real-time (RT-) object which incorporates a real-time clock as a mechanism for initiating an object action as a function of real time. The notion of accuracy as referring to the time gap between a state variable in the external world and its representation in a real-time computer system is adopted. The effects of the temporal uncertainties of different classes of communication protocols on the consistency and the accuracy of RT-objects are analyzed. Finally, an approach to structuring fault-tolerant RT-objects in the form of active object replicas is discussed, and the effects of a failure of a task in a replica on the responsiveness of remote objects are analyzed.< >

An overview is presented of Dynamo, an object-oriented model to support collaborative activities in a distributed environment. Dynamo is designed to meet the requirements that form the common core of engineering design in a variety of domains including: support for data and behavioral abstraction, incremental development and software reuse, decentralized control, ability to keep track of past history and synchronization of access to information, while ensuring maximum concurrency. The most distinguishing feature of the Dynamo model is the prominence of the time dimension in its modeling of computation. The notion of quasi-real-time is introduced. It is an adaptation of the time warp mechanism that forms a single concept under which a wide range of distributed computing functions can be unified, such as transaction management, version and history management and interactive collaboration.< >

A description is given of the architecture and implementation of a distributed graphical tool, the Graphic Issue Analysis (GIA) system to support brainstorming and issue analysis. GIA is implemented using an object-oriented environment for personal computers attached to local networks. It allows groups to share issues and comments on those issues in real time. This group tool allows the user to represent a mental model graphically and share it with others in the group in real time. Conflicts are resolved and semantic information in a general form is preserved. It is expected that the information captured and displayed will greatly enhance the group's ability to gather ideas and reach a consensus on those ideas.< >

The object-oriented Robot Independent Programming Environment (RIPE) is described. A system architecture based on hierarchies of distributed multiprocessors provides the computing platform for a layered programming structure that models the application as a set of software objects. These objects are designed to support model-based automated planning and programming, real-time sensor-based activity, error handling, and robust communication. The object-oriented paradigm provides mechanisms such as inheritance and polymorphism which allow the implementation of the system to satisfy the goals of software reusability, extensibility, reliability, and portability. By designing a hierarchy of generic parent classes and device-specific subclasses which inherit the same interface, the Robot Independent Programming Language (RIPL) is realized. Work cell tasks demonstrating robotic cask-handling operations for nuclear waste facilities are successfully implemented using this object-oriented software environment.< >

The BiiN operating system executive, an extensible multiuser, multitasking, object-based operating system that provides symmetric multiprocessing, distributed computing, transaction processing, and support for real-time programs, is discussed. Key system functions are embedded in VLSI to increase performance, reliability, availability and security. The operating system extends the hardware object support by providing a persistent object store. The complex data structures programmers create to describe entities like compound documents and engineering drawings can be stored as a collection of interconnected objects. The relationship between these objects is embodied in the pointers from one object to another. The operating system can store this collection of objects, as well as the pointers between objects, in the BiiN object store. The operating system provides the requisite synchronization and data integrity primitives to allow different programs to access the same objects simultaneously.< >

The DASH resource model is defined as a basis for reserving and scheduling resources (disk, CPU, network, etc.) involved in end-to-end handling of continuous-media (information flowing continuously over real time i.e. digital audio or digital video) data. The model uses primitives that express work-load characteristics and performance requirements, and defines an algorithm for negotiated reservation of distributed resources. This algorithm is embodied in the session reservation protocol, a backward-compatible extension of the Internet Protocol. Hardware trends and future applications that motivate the DASH resource model are described. The performance requirements for using continuous media and the limitations of existing systems are discussed. The DASH resource model for reserving and scheduling resources is presented. The DASH kernel is briefly described.< >

The management of modern telecommunication networks is a complex and labour-intensive task which requires the assimilation of vast amounts of information and the application of operators' judgement and expertise. Emerging computing and communication technologies enable the development of advanced tools which help operators manage their networks more effectively and economically. However, for these tools to be effective, they must be integrated in the users environments, and must meet the stringent operating requirements of robustness, real-time performance, and adaptability to the individual site and operators needs. The paper summarizes our design experience and trial results over the last several years of developing increasingly sophisticated network management tools. Next, we present an analysis of the requirements for successful introduction of these tools into network operations which is based on exploiting the synergies of multiple technologies, the functional and architectural integra- tion of the tools within the users environments, and the adherence to a software life cycle model which ensures the quality and evolution of the developed tools. Finally, the paper presents a detailed case study which shows the successful application of the above principles to the development of advanced surveillance tools for the DPN packet switching networks.

An examination is made of the problem of implementing rollback recovery in multicomputer distributed shared virtual memory environments, in which the shared memory is implemented in software and exists only virtually. A user-transparent checkpointing recovery scheme and a twin-page disk storage management are presented to implement a recoverable distributed shared virtual memory. The checkpointing scheme is integrated with the shared virtual memory management. The twin-page disk approach allows incremental checkpointing without an explicit 'undo' at the time of recovery. A single consistent checkpoint state is maintained on stable disk storage. The recoverable distributed shared virtual memory allows the system to restart computation from a previous checkpoint after a processor failure without a global restart.< >
