A prototype real-time multicomputer consisting of multiple single-board microcomputers interconnected by a high-speed, message-oriented bus is discussed. It uses both the notion of functional distribution and that of transparent multiprocessing. An object-oriented operating system is implemented on each host comprising the real-time component. Each instance of the operating system cooperates with other instances residing on other hosts in the real-time system to unify the management of the system's resources. The result is a transparent, multiprocessing environment that encourages the construction of distributed, real-time applications.
