Even though introduced for solving the consensus problem in asynchronous distributed systems, the notion of unreliable failure detector can be used as a powerful tool for any distributed protocol in order to get better performance by allowing the usage of aggressive time-outs to detect failures of entities executing the protocol. In this paper we present the designing of a Failure Detection Service (FDS) based on the notion of unreliable failure detectors introduced by Chandra and Toueg. FDS is able to detect crashed objects and entities that permanently omit to send messages without imposing changes to the source code of the underlying protocols that use this service. Also, FDS provides an object-oriented interface to its subscribers and, more important, it does not add network overhead if no entity subscribes to the service. This paper can be also seen as a first step towards a distributed implementation of a heartbeat-based failure management system as defined in Fault-Tolerant CORBA specification.

We present in this paper an unreliable distributed timing scrutinizer (UDTS), This mechanism captures the state of the network and, based on its observation, estimates the waiting time that maximizes the efficiency of a round-based protocol regarding the number and/or the duration of its computational rounds. An UDTS is not an abstract oracle, it is implementable and reveals the properties of the network. We illustrate our approach by addressing the consensus problem in asynchronous distributed systems equipped with an unreliable distributed timing scrutinizer The proposed protocol is conceptually simple. It benefits from the UDTS predictions to implement different convergence and decision conditions. This allows the protocol to be efficient in number and/or duration of rounds for stable networks.

Many emerging applications operate on continuous unbounded data streams and need real-time data services. Providing deadline guarantees for queries over dynamic data streams is a challenging problem due to bursty stream rates and time-varying contents. This paper presents a prediction-based QoS management scheme for real-time data stream query processing in distributed environments. The prediction-based QoS management scheme features query workload estimators, which predict the query workload using execution time profiling and input data sampling. In this paper, we apply the prediction-based technique to select the proper propagation schemes for data streams and intermediate query results in distributed environments. The performance study demonstrates that the proposed solution tolerates dramatic workload fluctuations and saves significant amounts of CPU time and network bandwidth with little overhead.

In this paper, we present a systems engineering methodology for constructing certifiable real-time distributed systems. In the proposed approach, an architectural and algorithmic solution to an application problem is designed by considering the "'weakest" models including the weakest asynchronous computational model and multimodal arrival model. Furthermore, timeliness properties are described using Jensen's benefit accrual predicates. Once a system solution is designed, timeliness properties are established by constructing necessary feasibility conditions that are expressed as non-valued predicates. The predicates are quantified and verified to produce the specification of a certified solution. We illustrate the approach by considering a packet transmission problem that desire soft timeliness. We present a certifiable solution to this problem that consists of switched Ethernet, a soft real-time packet scheduling algorithm (that was previously developed), and feasibility conditions.

In this paper we present the Java Fieldbus Control Framework (JFCF) which provides an object oriented programming framework for the rapid creation of concurrent control tasks for fieldbus-based automation systems. Our framework is implemented in Java which is going to become more popular in the field of industrial control, due to the advent of dedicated Java real-time systems and the real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ). We further describe an example application built within our framework consisting of an open Java control for a CANopen automation system featuring a SCARA robot arm, a transfer system and further peripheral fieldbus devices. Four independent tasks run concurrently to establish the overall automation process. In order to meet real-time requirements, the framework will be extended to comply to the RTSJ in the future. The reusability of object oriented software and the portability of Java code results in a reduction of costs for software creation and maintenance.

Complex simulation systems often comprise multiple distributed simulators that need to interoperate and synchronize states and events. In many cases, the simulation logics which are developed by different teams with specific expertise, need to be integrated to build a complete simulation system. Thus, supporting composability and reusability of simulation functionalities with minimal integration and performance overhead is a challenging but required capability. Middleware for game engines are promising to realize both the modular and reusable development criteria as well as the high performance requirements, while data-centric publish/subscribe middleware can support seamless integration and synchronization of the distributed artifacts. However, differences in the level of abstraction at which these middleware operate and the semantic differences in their underlying ontologies make it hard and challenging for simulation application developers and system integrators to realize a complete, operational system. To that end this paper presents a model-driven approach to blending the two middleware, wherein the modeling capabilities provide intuitive and higher-level abstractions for developers to reason about the composition and validation of the complete system, and the generative capabilities address the inherent and accidental complexities incurred in reconciling the semantic differences between the gaming and pub/sub middleware. We present a concrete implementation of our approach and illustrate its use and performance results using simple use cases.

Devices in ubiquitous computing environments are usually embedded, wearable, and handheld, have resource constraints, and are all connected to each other through wireless connections and other computers possibly through fixed network infrastructures, such as the Internet. These devices may form numerous webs of short-range and often low-power mobile ad hoc networks to exchange information. distributed object computing (DOC) middleware technologies have been successful in promoting high quality and reusable distributed software for enterprise-oriented environments. In order to reap the same benefit in ubiquitous computing environments, it is important to note that the natural interactions among distributed objects in ubiquitous computing environments are quite different due to various factors, such as bandwidth constraints, unpredictable device mobility, network topology change, and context-sensitivity (or situation-awareness) of application objects. Hence, the interactions among distributed objects tend to be more spontaneous and short-lived rather than predictable and long-term. In this paper, a middleware protocol, RKF, to facilitate distributed object-based application software to interact in an ad hoc fashion in ubiquitous computing environments is presented. RKF addresses both spontaneous object discovery and context-sensitive object data exchange. Our experimental results, based on RKF's implementation and evaluation inside the object request broker of our RCSM middleware test bed, indicate that it is lightweight, has good performance, and can be easily used in PDA-like devices.

We highlight major technical requirements for designing and developing future distributed multimedia information systems using Internet technology. The key requirements of this system are to allow users to access and search and to communicate multimedia documents consisting of text, audio, video and images. We emphasize the role of object-oriented technology for information management and real-time communication protocols to guarantee QoS. We present a reference architecture for a Web-based real-time distributed multimedia system which integrates enabling technologies including real-time streaming, multimedia indexing and searching and distributed object management. © 2000 IEEE.

Proposes a distributed computing framework for the real-time management of a large number of robots in an industrial setting. The primary design objective of this framework is to allow a centralized heterogeneous multiprocessor controller to perform real-time scheduling and evaluation of Newton-Euler equations for manipulating the robot motion. The real-time scheduling of tasks in such an environment is shown to be an NP-hard problem, for which we propose a deadline-based heuristic. A detailed simulation reveals that the proposed heuristic can achieve near-optimal performance. © 2000 IEEE.

In this paper we describe the implementation of our end-to-end QoS-driven resource management scheme, called ERDoS, within a CORBA-compliant ORE that we call the ERDoS QoS ORE. Unlike other real-time CORBA implementations that focus on real-time support for simple client-server applications, our ERDoS QoS ORE provides end-to-end QoS support (i.e., QoS spanning computer;network, and storage resources) to applications, while retaining the benefits of an open distributed object system. Specifically we present three contributions. First, we present a model for describing end-to-end applications as a combination of client-server interactions between CORBA objects. Second, Lye define a model for relating the user/application level eos requirements to the corresponding resource demand requirements of these individual CORBA objects. Third, we suggest a framework for performing distributed resource management within the CORBA environment.
