object-oriented programming is a popular approach for modem software design in many fields. However, OOP extension for embedded parallel processing still has conceptual and practical problems. The paper considers concepts of merging OOP with parallel processing. Process-centric view of parallel OOP is presented. The VSIPL signal and image processing library standard is an example. Concepts of Parallel VSIPL with OOP features are proposed. They are based on shared-data rather then message-passing paradigm, on Asynchronous Growing Processes formal model of parallel computations and Shared Data object Interface (SDOI) middleware.

The approach described in this paper makes use of Coordinated Atomic Actions (CA actions) - a structural design mechanism, for representing the cooperation between objects, at different stages of the software development. The original concept of a CA action has been expanded for accommodating the modelling needs of the initial stages of software development. One of the motivations for using CA actions in an OO approach, is the ability of CA actions to extract from the specification of an object those issues which are related with its the collaborative activities, thus avoiding that a specification of a cooperation be scattered among the specifications of the objects. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated in terms of a benchmark case study.

In this paper, we describe our currently ongoing work to build object-oriented distributed middleware for networked home appliances, which are executed on commodity operating systems. The current prototype has adopted HAVi(Home Audio/Video Interoperability) as distributed middleware for home appliances. We have implemented HAVi in Java, and has adopted Linux as an operating system. Since Java and Linux axe running on a variety of platforms, our software can be ported to a target system without modification. Therefore, it becomes easy to develop a new application on a standard PC platform. The paper describes the design issues and the implementation of our system. We have actually implemented several programs that emulate home appliances such as a digital television. Also, we present some experiences with the current prototype.

distributed applications are modelled in an object-based model like CORBA. Here, the system is a collection of objects. The objects are manipulated only through operations supported by themselves. The purpose-oriented model is proposed where an access rule shows for what each subject s manipulates an object o by an operation t of o so as to keep the information flow legal. The purpose of s to access o by t is modelled to be what operation u of s invokes t to manipulate o. That is, the purpose-oriented access rule is specified in the form (s:u, o:t). In the object-based system, on receipt of a request op from an object o₁, an object o₂ computes op and then sends back the response of op to o₁. Here, if the request and the response carry data, the data in o₁ and o₂ is exchanged among o₁ and o₂. Furthermore, the operations are nested in the object-based system. Even if each purpose-oriented rule between a pair of objects satisfies the information flow relation, some data in one object may illegally flow to another object through the nested invocation of operations. In this paper, we discuss what information flow is legal in the nested invocations in the purpose-oriented model of the object-based system. © 1998 IEEE.

This work presents a proposal to use aspect orientation in the analysis and design of distributed Embedded real-time Systems (DERTS). These systems have several requirements directly related to their main characteristics, the so-called Non-Functional Requirements (NFR), which refer to orthogonal properties, conditions, and restrictions that are spread out over the entire system. Pure object-oriented methods do not address successfully those so called crosscutting concerns, so new technologies, like aspect orientation, are applied in order to fulfill this gap. The paper presents DERAF - distributed Embedded real-time Aspects Framework, an extensible and high-level framework (i.e. implementation-independent) to handle NFR of DERTS at earlier design stages. DERAF combines the use of aspects with RT-UML, aiming to separate the handling of non-functional from functional requirements in the Model Driven Design of DERTS. The paper presents the use of DERAF on a case study of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV).

Traditionally transactions have been single-threaded. In such an environment the thread terminating the transaction is, by definition, the thread which performed the work. Therefore, transaction termination is implicitly synchronised with the completion of the transactional work. With the increased availability of both software and hardware multi-threading, transaction services are being required to allow multiple threads to be active within a transaction. In these systems it is important to guarantee that all threads have completed when a transaction is terminated, otherwise some work map not be performed transactionally. In this paper we present a protocol for the enforcement of checked transactional behaviour within an asynchronous environment. We illustrate the use of the protocol within a proposed implementation for a CORBA-compliant object Transaction Service intended for a soft real-time application which makes extensive use of concurrency and asynchronous message passing.

Almost a year ago, Microsoft has introduced the .NET architecture as a new component-based programming environment, which allows for easy integration of classical distributed programming techniques with Web computing. NET defines a type system and introduces notions such as component, object, and interface, which are building blocks for distributed multi-language component-based applications. As many other component frameworks, NET mainly focuses on functional interfaces of components. Nonfunctional aspects of components, such as resource usage (CPU, memory), timing behavior, fault-tolerance, or security requirements are currently not expressed in NET's component interfaces. Within this paper, we discuss the usage of aspect-oriented programming techniques in context of the NET framework. We focus on the fault-tolerance aspect and discuss the expression of non-functional component properties (aspects) as C# custom attributes. Our approach uses reflection to generate replicated objects based on settings of a special "fault-tolerance" attribute for C# components(perpendicular to). We have implemented an aspect-weaver for integration of aspect-code and component-code, which uses the mechanisms of the language-neutral NET type system. Therefore, our approach is not restricted to the C# language but works for an), of the NET programming languages.

distributed applications are difficult to build and maintain and are even more difficult when the applications are distributed over wide-area networks. distributed object computing middleware has emerged to simplify the building of distributed applications by hiding implementation details behind functional interfaces. However critical applications have non-functional requirements, such as real-rime performance, dependability, or security, that are as important as the functional requirements, but are also hidden by the middleware. Because current distributed object middleware doesn't support these aspects of critical applications, application developers often find themselves bypassing the distributed object systems, effectively gaining little or no advantage from the middleware. We have developed Quality objects (QuO), a framework for including Quality of Service (QoS) in distributed object applications. QuO supports the specification of QoS contracts between clients and service providers, runtime monitoring of contracts, and adaptation to changing system conditions. A crucial aspect of QuO is a suite of Quality Description Languages for describing states of QoS, system elements that need to be monitored to measure the current QoS, and notification and adaptation to trigger when the state of QoS in the system changes. This paper gives a brief overview of QuO and describes the syntax and semantics of CDL, the component of QDL for describing QoS contracts.

Guaranteeing response times of real-time (RT) distributed computing systems has been recognized as one of the biggest challenges by the RT software research community for three decades. The concept of a hybrid approach that combines analytical derivation approaches and testing-based statistical derivation approaches in a symbiotic form for meeting this challenge was presented in recent years. However, concrete practical hybrid approaches are still in early stages of development. One such approach pursued by the authors and their collaborators is presented here. This paper focuses on the cases of deriving tight execution time bounds of the segments of object methods which do not involve calls for services from the operating system kernel and middleware. A case-study that demonstrates how the adopted approach works in handling a simple practical application is also presented.

Requirements of High Integrity systems now encompass distribution mechanisms along with strong functional and non-functional features (run-time support for hardware, dependability, safety, analyzability). In this paper, we show how model processing help addressing such needs. We present a generic distribution model suitable for High Integrity systems, and demonstrate how a high-level modeling deployment view allows one to greatly reduce the model complexity. Finally, we conclude by assessing a case study.
