A distributed measurement laboratory (DML) having instruments scattered in different geographic areas is proposed in this paper. Such a system allows users to practice any distributed instrumentation and simultaneously monitor it via real-time video. The system is characterized by use of object-oriented technique to integrate the scattered electronic instruments and video capture devices to form the DML, leading to a flexible and extendable architecture. Finally, evaluations of the DML have been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Supporting rapid response to changing customer requirements, reduction in both time and cost of manufacturing process, and integration within a heterogeneous wide-area networked enterprise are necessary to increase worldwide competitiveness in manufacturing. The propose a CORBA-based architecture to realize that manufacturing environment. We have developed an ORE for PLC to realize that architecture. And we have developed two prototypes of remote monitoring system for factory automation, which are a manufacturing line monitoring system and a remote PLC monitoring with using Web browser, to examine feasibility and effectiveness of oar proposed architecture. According to experiments of these prototypes, we show the feasibility and effectiveness of oar proposed CORBA-based architecture.

The process of defining requirements for "real-time Java" and subsequently the two competing specifications for it, began with considerable thought by the participants about what the term "real-time Java" could and should mean. Now two corresponding requirements and specification processes have begun for "distributed real-time Java". This paper summarizes some ideas about that term and an initial approach to a specification. The approach is based on providing a natural and minimal mechanistic extension to Remote Method Invocation (RMI) that facilitates real-time distributed computing in general and real-time distributed (in the sense of trans-node) programming in particular. Here, "real-time RMI" is not defined as "real fast" or even "real predictable" RMI (although those are both important attributes). Instead, it means that the timeliness properties of computational entities are preserved when the entities perform RMIs and RETURNs that span physical nodes. A similar approach has been proven effective in several other distributed real-time contexts, and is a primary feature of the unified proposal to OMG for dynamic real-time CORBA. © 2000 IEEE.

Data Stream Processing (DSP) is a widely used programming paradigm to process an unbounded event stream. Often, DSP frameworks are deployed on the cloud with a scalable resource model. One of the key requirements of DSP is to produce results with low latency. With the emergence of IoT, many event sources have been located outside the cloud which can result in higher end-to-end latency due to communication overhead. However, due to the abundance of resources at the IoT layer, Edge computing has emerged as a viable computational paradigm. In this paper, we devise an optimisation framework, consisting of a constraint satisfaction formulation and a system model, that aims to minimise end-to-end latency through appropriate placement of DSP operators either on cloud nodes or edge devices, i.e. deployed in an edge-cloud integrated environment. We test our optimisation framework using OMNeT++, with realistic topologies and power consumption data, and show that it is capable of achieving approximate to 1.65 times reduction of latency compared to edge-only and cloud-only placements, which in turn also reduces the energy consumption per event by up to approximate to 4% at the edge layer. To the best of our knowledge our optimisation framework is the first of its kind to integrate power, bandwidth and CPU constraints with latency minimisation.

This paper tackles the problem of ever changing embedded systems non-functional requirements, specially the architectural ones. It proposes a solution based on Features Model and MDA standards, which is called Features-oriented Model-Driven Architecture (FOMDA). This proposal can be used to help application designer in defining the mappings and transformations of UML models to as many target platforms as wished. This is done by configuring model-to-model and model-to-code transformations over tiers, where every tier represents some target platform properties that the system must be mapped and transformed to. To validate the proposal a case study related to the development of an embedded real-time system is presented, detailing how to transform a generic high-level UML model to a model specific for a given target platform. Obtained results are optimistic and conclude that the FOMDA approach can make designers re-think their current development process to make it more decoupled from a specific target platform.

Nowadays, there are many protocols able to cope with process crashes, but, unfortunately, a process crash represents only a particular faulty behavior. Handling tougher failures (e.g. sending omission failures, receive omission failures, arbitrary failures) is a real practical challenge due to malicious attacks or unexpected software errors. This paper proposes a component-based methodology allowing to take a protocol A resilient to crash failures and to add software components, namely liveness and safety failure detectors, in order to adapt the protocol A to be resilient to more general failures than crashes, without changing the code of A.. Then, the feasibility of this approach is shown, by providing an implementation of liveness failure detectors and of safer failure detectors for a protocol solving the problem of global data computation.

Service selection is one of the current challenges in Service oriented computing (SOC). We propose a service selection method for replacing used services in case of a failure. The approach considers the functional as well as the non-functional features of services. Furthermore, the service selection method searches for a service just meeting the requirements and not for the best possible service exceeding the requirements. This saves services having high QoS properties for clients really in need of them. © 2011 IEEE.

Sensor networks introduce a new application domain and set of challenges in distributed computing including new network-level programming languages, global system abstractions, and general-purpose communication protocols. These challenges are brought about by the tight integration of computation, communication, and distributed real-time interaction with the physical world. With the growing interest in interconnecting different sensor networks across a wide-area communication infrastructure, an overarching challenge becomes one of arriving at an agreed-upon global sensor network architecture that ensures interoperability. Unlike the Internet, where a layered communication stack (namely, the TCP/IP stack) defines the network architecture, a sensor network architecture must unify not only communication interfaces but also programming interfaces, sit-ice network communication and computation functions are tightly intertwined. In that sense, the sensor network architecture refers to a layered stack of distributed computing abstractions. This paper presents an architecture and key considerations in designing and interconnecting local and global sensor networks. Candidate protocols and middleware instantiations are described from the authors' ongoing work that meet the discussed considerations.

Though Java is expected to have a wide range of embedded applications, there exist some problems in applying Java to real-time systems. The hybrid architecture, in which the Java runtime environment is implemented on a real-time OS, parts of the application requiring real-time properties are implemented on the real-time OS, and parts of the application requiring GUI features, extension of features, and replacing of programs should be implemented on the Java runtime environment, is practical. In this paper, we present interface specifications between Java threads and real-time tasks based the hybrid architecture we build, called JTRON specification, and experiences based on application development using its implementation. First, cooperative computation models between Java threads and realtime tasks in the architecture are described. Based on these models, we categorize three types of communication interface between Java threads and real-time tasks: real-time OS attach class, shared object with explicit locking mechanism, and stream-based communication. By standardizing the interface, not only the Java program, but also the real-time program becomes portable and reusable. Two of the three types of the interface can be applied to other real-time OSes also.

Cyber-physical systems pose considerable technical challenges, ranging from the distributed programming paradigms to networking protocols with timeliness as a structuring concern, including systems theory that combines physical concerns and computational concerns Cyber Physical systems is deemed correct in case it abides to the functional correctness as well as a set of quantitative characteristics Formal specification techniques for such systems have to be able to describe all these concerns. Unfortunately, a single specification technique that is well suited for all these concerns s is yet not available. Instead one finds various specialized techniques that are very good at describing individual concerns of cyber-physical system. This observation has led to research into the combination and semantic integration of specification techniques. This paper proposes an approach for specifying real time cyber physical systems based on aspect-oriented formal specification, which exploits the diversity and power of existing formal specification languages. We provide an aspect-oriented specification approach based on the combination of object-Z and time-CSP. We increase separation variable in the basic elements and crosscutting concerns to achieve formalization of aspect-oriented characteristics. This aspect oriented formal specification method simplifies the requirement analysis process of real time cyber physical systems. Two case studies illustrate the specification process of aspect-oriented formal specification for real time cyber physical systems.
