The paper describes benchmarking for evolvable and adaptable real time command and control systems. MITRE's Evolvable real-time C3 initiative developed an approach that would enable current real time systems to evolve into the systems of the future. We designed and implemented an infrastructure and data manager so that various applications could be hosted on the infrastructure. Then we completed a follow-on effort to design flexible adaptable distributed object management systems for command and control (C2) systems. Such an adaptable system would switch scheduling algorithms, policies, and protocols depending on the need and the environment. Both initiatives were carried out for the United States Air Force. One of the key contributions of the work is the investigation of real time features for distributed object management systems. Partly as a result of our work we are now seeing various real time distributed object management products being developed. In selecting a real time distributed object management systems, we need to analyze various criteria. Therefore, we need benchmarking studies for real time distributed object management systems. Although benchmarking systems such as Hartstone and distributed Hartstone have been developed for middleware systems, these systems are not developed specifically for distributed object based middleware. Since much of our work is heavily based on distributed objects, we developed benchmarking systems by adapting the Hartstone system. The paper describes our efforts in developing benchmarks. © 2000 IEEE.

Augmented reality and group communication in wireless ad-hoc networks form relatively, new fields of research. When using group communication ordering and timeliness requirements are important. Moreover, when using wireless ad-hoc networks, the possibility of network partition is a serious consideration. In this paper we explore these three issues in the context of using group communication to support mobile augmented reality applications. We describe a policy that enables us to handle partitions and failures, while allowing the members in a partition to make progress, although limited by the application's consistency requirements. We introduce an approach to determining the message ordering requirements needed to maintain a desired level of consistency and timeliness requirements that should be met in order to have the application state correspond to the sequence of events perceived in the real world.

In classical real-time systems the resources for an application are allocated at system start so that every resource request can be fulfilled in future. This would lead to much internal waste of resources in the case of modern Self-X systems, because these systems have highly dynamic resource consumptions. The Flexible Resource Manager (FRM) was developed to overcome this problem. The manager puts temporarily unused resources at other applications' disposal. In this paper the FRM approach is evaluated by concrete application examples and randomly generated applications. © 2010 IEEE.

distributed application programmers rely on middleware such as CORBA in order to handle the complexity that arises from the distributed and heterogeneous nature of the underlying computing platform. CORBA, in particular, provides a media streaming mechanism that can be used both for media streaming and for associating QoS requirements with media streams. Despite defining the interfaces of the media streaming mechanism, the corresponding specification does not prescribe how QoS is enforced at low levels by the middleware. This paper describes the design and implementation of a QoS architecture, called Quartz, which has been integrated with CORBA in order to provide a framework that allows applications to transfer real-time media in open systems. This framework is employed to model and simulate a pattern recognition mechanism for use in an automated manufacturing cell, which is also described and analysed in this paper. © 2000 IEEE.

In this paper we propose and evaluate a methodology for run-time fast software component migration for application survivability in distributed real-time systems. For fast migration we focus on the two dominant factors;lightweight migration and proactive resource discovery. The former is to minimize the absolute amount of time required for migration and the latter is to provide a destination host information at the time of migration decision. The run-time software component is implemented as Java object whose class is defined by extending the unicast remote server class. The proactive resource discovery consists of Community protocol and associated algorithms. These two ideas have been implemented as a middleware that also provides a real-time job scheduler in JVM (Java Virtual Machine), and a naming server. Our analysis and simulation in a cluster computing environment show that the proactive resource discovery requires very low communication overhead while maintaining high effectiveness in finding available CPU resources. Our implementation and measurement show that run-time component migration based on our approach takes much less time compared to the approach based on reactive resource discovery.

An approach to introducing exception handling into object oriented N-version programming (NVP) is proposed. General principles of structuring systems with diversity are outlined. The importance of using exceptions while applying diversely developed software is shown. Internal and external exceptions are clearly separated in our framework: each version has its own internal exceptions but the external exceptions of all versions have to be the same and identical to the interface exceptions of the diversely designed class. This scheme requires an adjudicator of a special kind to allow signalling interface exceptions when a majority of versions have signalled the same exception. These ideas are demonstrated using a general class diversity framework developed recently. An Ada implementation is outlined. © 2000 IEEE.

object-oriented languages support many modem programming paradigms such as information hiding, inheritance, polymorphism, and dynamic binding. As a result, software systems implemented in OO languages are more reusable and reliable than those in non-OO. Many legacy software systems were created before OO programming became popular and needed to be redesigned and updated to OO programs. The process of abstracting OO designs from the procedural source code was often done manually or with limited assistance from program structural diagrams. Most reengineering focuses on the functionality of the original program, and the OO redesign often results in a completely new design based on the designers' understanding of the original program. Such an approach is not sufficient, for it not only, takes time and effort for designers to become familiar with the original program, but the approach itself is also mistake-prone due to the human involvement. This paper presents a computer-aided semi-automatic method that abstracts OO designs from the original procedural source code. More specifically, it is a method for OO redesign based on program structural diagrams, visualization, and execution slice. We conducted a case study by applying this method to an inventory management software system. Results indicate that our method can effectively and efficiently abstract an appropriate OO design out of the original C code as well as re-generate part of the system in C++ code based on this new OO design.

Standards-based quality of service (QoS)-enabled Component middletvare is increasingly being used as a platform,for developing distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems that execute in open environments where operational conditions, input workload, and resource availability cannot be characterized accurately a priori. Although QoS-enabled component middleware offers many desirable features, until recently it lacked the ability to efficiently allocate resources and configure platform-specific QoS settings based on utilization of system resources and application QoS. Moreover, it has also lacked the ability to monitor and enforce application QoS requirements. This paper presents two contributions to research on adaptive resource management for component-based DRE systems. First, we describe the structure and functionality of the Resource Allocation and Control Engine (RACE), which is an open-source adaptive resource management framework built atop standards-based QoS-enabled component iniddleware. Second, we demonstrate the effectiveness of RACE in the context of a representative DREsystem: NASA's Magnetospheric Multi-scale Mission system.

The development of safety critical software applications has always been done in accordance to strict methods. These systems require the application of verification techniques that guarantee safety properties. Often, they are complex systems that require the integration of different types of engineers such as safety engineers and software architects. Currently, different groups of engineers apply different analysis and modeling techniques (e.g. architectural description languages, and safety analysis models);these differences create inconsistencies between different types of model. In this paper we introduce some solutions to reduce these problems in some safety architectures. These solutions integrate developing modeling languages such as UML and specific safely analysis languages such as FTA and FMECA.

A challenging task in the LBS system engineering is to implement a highly scalable system architecture which can manage moderate-size configurations handling thousands of moving items as well as upper-end configurations handling millions of moving items. The architecture named the GALIS is a cluster-based distributed computing system architecture that consists Of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone. In this paper, we explain a prototype location data management system structuring major components of GALIS by employing the TMO programming scheme, including the execution engine middleware developed to support real-time distributed object programming and real-time distributed computing system design. We present how to generate realistic location sensing reports and how to process such location reports and location-related queries. Some experimental results showing performance factors regarding distributed query processing are also explained.
