At this turn of the century the objectoriented (OO) distributed real-time (RT) programming movement is growing rapidly along with the networked embedded systems market. The motivations are reviewed and then a brief overview is given of the particular programming scheme which this author and his collaborators have been establishing. The scheme is called the time-triggered message triggered object (TMO) programming scheme and it is used to make specific illustrations of the issues and potentials of OO RT programming. Fault tolerance capabilities are required in many distributed RT computing applications. At this time the development of middleware which is capable of supporting reliable fault-tolerant execution of applicationlevel RT distributed objects is an important challenge to the research community. Some major issues that need to be resolved and some promising approaches are discussed. © 2001 IEEE.

During the last years, component based software development has become a well accepted software engineering paradigm within the automotive industry. This fact is not only reflected by upcoming development tools but also by newly arising automotive software standards. In component based software engineering, applications are built by assembling small reusable building blocks, the components. Typically more than one component implementation meets the application developer's requirements, so proper selection of the assembled components becomes a key element of the whole procurement and engineering process. This paper's contribution is twofold: First, a basic set of performance and dependability metrics and measures for automotive components is identified. Second, a unified benchmarking process is proposed, that allows an unambiguous comparison of distinct component implementations of a given component class.

Effective resource management for distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems is hard due to their unique characteristics, including (1) constraints in multiple resources and (2) highly fluctuating resource availability and input workload. DRE systems can benefit from a middleware framework that enables adaptive resource management algorithms to ensure application QoS requirements are met. This paper identifies key challenges in designing and extending resource allocation algorithms for DRE systems. We present an empirical study of bin-packing algorithms enhanced to meet these challenges. Our analysis identifies input application patterns that help generate appropriate heuristics for using these algorithms effectively in DRE systems.

In this paper we describe our approach for developing a QoS-aware, dependable execution environment for large-scale distributed stream processing applications. distributed stream processing applications have strong timeliness and security demands. In particular, we address the following challenges: (1) propose a real-time dependable execution model by extending the component-based execution model with real-time and dependability properties, and (2) develop QoS-aware application composition and adaptation techniques that employ resource management strategies and security policies when discovering and selecting application components. Our approach enables us to develop a distributed stream processing environment that is predictable, secure, flexible and adaptable.

As the demands for real time distributed systems increase, the need for programming tools useful in development of such application systems is becoming increasingly acute. An issue that the research community has long recognized as an important technological challenge but has not shown much progress in meeting the challenge is to guarantee response times of real time distributed systems. Two basic problems must be solved to effectively meet this challenge: (1) to establish the distributed real time program structure and the system infrastructure structure, i.e., the structure of the operating system (OS) and the communication infrastructure, that enable systematic analysis of the worst case time behavior of the application systems;and (2) to establish a tool which performs automated analysis of the worst case time behavior while leaving only minimal work to the designers. The problem area (1) has been recognized as a research area for a long time, but only in recent years has the skeleton of a usable technical foundation started emerging. In other words, there has long been a lack of fully general and yet easily analyzable distributed real time program structures and also a lack of useful OS timing models. However, on the basis of the skeleton emerged, rapid progress is expected in the future toward establishment of a full technical foundation. Therefore, the time seems ripe for launching new larger scale attacks on problem (2) on the basis of those recent developments in handling problem (1). © 2000 IEEE.

A crucial aspect in the design of (embedded real-time) operating systems concerns interrupt handling. This paper presents the concept of a modularized interrupt-handling subsystem that enables the synchronization of interrupt-driven, non-sequential code without the need to disabling hardware interrupts. The basic idea is to use nonblocking/optimistic concurrency sequences for synchronization inside an operating-system kernel. Originally designed for the PURE embedded operating system, the presented object-oriented implementation is highly portable not only regarding the CPU but also operating systems and yet efficient. © 2000 IEEE.

Presents an approach towards the automatic synthesis of implementations from real-time object-oriented design models. From an application design model that addresses the functional requirements of the system, and given end-to-end timing requirements, our synthesis approach generates a feasible implementation model, i.e. one that will meet the timing requirements. The synthesis process is supported by automatic code generation that can take the application design model and the synthesized implementation model, and can generate code for the target platform. The synthesis of an implementation model is facilitated through the use of a generic (application-independent) implementation architecture, thereby reducing the synthesis problem to selecting a mapping of the application design model to the artifacts of the implementation architecture. In this paper, we use a multi-threaded event handling architecture with fixed event priorities. The synthesis problem then consists of determining priorities for events and mapping events to threads. We show how, given such a mapping, the response times can be analyzed, and then how, using the analysis, a feasible implementation model can be automatically synthesized. © 2000 IEEE.

The ubiquitous computing scenario brings many new problems such as coping with the limited processing power of mobile devices, frequent disconnections, the migration of code and tasks between heterogeneous devices, and others. Current practical approaches to the ubiquitous. computing problem usually rely upon traditional computing paradigms conceived back when distributed applications where not a concern. In this paper we propose UbiHolo, a new end-to-end model oriented to development and execution of applications over large-scale ubiquitous computing systems. UbiHolo is based on the Holoparadigm (in short, Holo), a new software paradigm oriented to the development of distributed computer systems. After that we show that UbiHolo is scalable, and that it is possible to create and manage execution of applications over large-scale ubiquitous environments without a great impact on application's user response times. Our results are obtained through a simulation of a Holo system with up to 950 nodes, which was implemented over the p2psim simulator.

The development of real-time systems that are distributed over a wide area is a significant problem that has challenged researchers for many years. Such systems require precise timing of actions throughout, but wide area networks tend to have variable delays that greatly reduce determinism. The framework described here supports the composition of wide-area real-time distributed Virtual Computer systems from deterministic components to provide precise timing from end-to-end The framework will use switched optical networks such as those being developed for, the OptIPuter project for well-regulated long-distance paths yielding low jitter Within campus networks, the time-Triggered Ethernet technology will provide deterministic switching of packets for real-time applications while supporting legacy IP traffic. Finally, at the edges, the time-triggered Message-triggered object (TMO) Support Middleware will manage resources to provide real-time operations while supporting an easy-to-program interface and high-level timing specification.
