Performance analysis tools for enterprise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems require instrumenting heterogeneous sources (such as application- and system-level hardware and software resources). Traditional techniques for software instrumentation of such systems, however, are tightly coupled to system design and metrics of interest. It is therefore hard for system testers to increase their knowledge base and analytical capabilities for enterprise DRE system performance using existing instrumentation techniques when metrics of interest are not known during initial system design. This paper provides two contributions to research on software instrumentation for enterprise DRE systems. First, it presents OASIS, which is service-oriented middleware for instrumenting enterprise DRE systems to collect and extract metrics without design time knowledge of which metrics are collected. Second, this paper empirically evaluates OASIS in the context of a representative enterprise DRE system from the domain of shipboard computing. Results from applying OASIS to a representative enterprise DRE system show that its flexibility enables DRE system testers to precisely control the overhead incurred via instrumentation. © 2010 IEEE.

We report supporting dynamic transport selection in omniORB2, which is a CORBA 2.0 compliant CORBA system that has been developed at AT&T Laboratories, Cambridge. We describe our design and implementation of supporting dynamic transport protocol selection in our system, and some initial experiments with the system. In our approach, IIOP can be selected for ensuring interoperability between applications. Thus, applications adopting our system can communicate with those adopting other CORBA systems, which run on the Internet environment. On the other hand, an application can select more suitable transport protocols for improving its performance or ensuring its real-time constraints if a server also supports the same transport protocol according to the characteristic of the application. © 2000 IEEE.

In many application domains, the distributed object computing (DOC) middleware is responsible for dispatching upcalls to one or more application objects when events or requests arrive from clients. Implementing efficient, predictable, and scalable middleware dispatching mechanisms is hard and implementing them for multi-threaded systems is even harder. In particular dispatching mechanisms must be prepared to dispatch upcalls to multiple objects, to handle recursive requests originated from application-provided upcalls, and must often collaborate with the application to control object life-cycle. In our DOC middleware research we have implemented many dispatching mechanisms that repeatedly apply common solutions to solve the challenges outlined above. Moreover, we have discovered that the forces constraining dispatching mechanisms often differ slightly thereby requiring alternative solutions. This paper presents two contributions to the design and implementation of efficient, predictable, scalable and flexible DOC middleware and applications. First, it shows how patterns can be applied to the object-oriented systems to capture key design and performance characteristics of proven dispatching mechanisms. Second it presents a pattern language that describes successful solutions that are appropriate for key dispatching challenges that arise in various real-time DOC middleware and applications. © 2000 IEEE.

The size and complexity of large-scale distributed embedded systems such as automotive and process controls have increased recently. Sophisticated systems that are safe and environmentally friendly require numerous types of sensor data, which are collected from various devices and sent to computers through networks. To develop such large-scale distributed embedded systems with high dependability and productivity, we have developed a virtual execution environment platform. This platform integrates numerous CPU simulators and various device simulators through the network and provides network-wide simulation functionalities. In this paper, we describe a fast CPU simulator and controlled object simulation for testing control software in a virtual software execution environment. The virtual environment integrates a CPU simulator and a controlled object simulator in order to test functional behaviors of embedded control software. The environment enables the developer to test control software at the same execution rate as a real system without the source codes. This is very helpful because in this industry, not all of the source codes are provided. © 2011 IEEE.

The goal of I-centric Services based on Super distributed objects' is to provide a seamless computing environment on the basis of users' individual communication spaces. It controls and manages large numbers of autonomous and decentralized objects (Super distributed objects), in individual living or working spaces providing services that can adapt to users' individual requirements (I-centric Services). This paper introduces the I-centric Communications approach and identifies the requirements and design of Super distributed objects as the paradigm for future pervasive and autonomous systems. Results of this project have been adopted by the World Wireless Research Forum (WWRF) and object Management Group (OMG).

In this paper we are interested in mixed-criticality embedded real-time applications mapped on distributed heterogeneous architectures. The architecture provides both spatial and temporal partitioning, thus enforcing enough separation for the critical applications. With temporal partitioning, each application is allowed to run only within predefined time slots, allocated on each processor. The sequence of time slots for all the applications on a processor are grouped within a Major Frame, which is repeated periodically. We assume that the safety-critical applications (on all criticality levels) are scheduled using static-cyclic scheduling and the non-critical applications are scheduled using fixed-priority preemptive scheduling. We consider that each application runs in a separate partition, and each partition is allocated several time slots on the processors where the application is mapped. We are interested to determine the sequence and size of the time slots within the Major Frame on each processor such that both the safety-critical and non-critical applications are schedulable. We have proposed a Simulated Annealing-based approach to solve this optimization problem. The proposed algorithm has been evaluated using several synthetic and real-life benchmarks. © 2011 IEEE.

distributed object-oriented middleware technologies have been adopted for ubiquitous communicating real-time and embedded systems. Although Java plays an important role in building distributed object-oriented middleware because of its portability and productivity, it is not popularto real-time system developers because it is slow and hard to keep real-timeness due to garbage collection. This paper presents a novel memory classification and measurement approach for modem programming language such as Java to analyze the memory utilization of middleware technologies in order to improve them for embedded systems using limited computing resource. We classified Java memory into four categories such as static, quasi-static, quasi-dynamic and dynamic, and show how to measure the size of each memory. Intensive case studies using popular Java middleware technologies such as Web Services, CORBA, RMI and HORB revealed that reducing the use of dynamic memory has contributed far more to the efficiency and performance than reducing the use of quasi-static and quasi-dynamic memory.

MOOsburg is a community-oriented multi-user domain. It was created to enrich the Blacksburg Electronic Village by providing real-time, situated, interaction, and a place-based information model for community information. We are experimenting with an implementation fundamentally different from classic multi-user domains object-oriented (MOOs), supporting distributed system development and management, and a direct manipulation approach to navigation. To guide the development of MOOsburg, we are focusing on a set of community-oriented applications, including a virtual science fair.

This paper introduces ReDAC, a new algorithm for dynamic reconfiguration of multi-threaded applications. In order to achieve high reliability and availability, distributed component software has to support dynamic reconfiguration. Typical examples include the application of hot-fixes to deal with security vulnerabilities. ReDAC can be implemented on top of the modern component-platforms Java and NET. We extend the statical term component, denoting a unit of deployment, to runtime by defining a capsule (runtime component instance) to be a set of interconnected objects. This allows us to apply dynamic updates at the level of components during runtime without stopping whole applications. Using system-wide unique identifiers for threads (logical thread IDs), we can detect and also bring capsules into a reconfigurable state by selectively blocking threads, relying on data structures maintained by additional logic integrated into the capsules using aspect-oriented programming. An important contribution of this paper is that ReDAC supports the dynamic reconfiguration of distributed multi-threaded and re-entrant components with cyclic call dependencies.

distributed real-time automotive embedded systems have to be highly dependable as well as cost-efficient due to the large number of manufactured units. To close the gap between raising complexity and cutting costs, upcoming software standards like AUTOSAR introduce a clear separation of concerns into their system architecture. An AUTOSAR application is built from components that deal with business logic only whereas infrastructural services are provided by standardized middleware. Unfortunately, this middleware tends to be heavy-weight due to its coarse-grained layered design. By applying a component based design to AUTOSAR's middleware, a custom-tailored version for each specific application and system node can be built to overcome this problem. This paper demonstrates how to automatically synthesize component based middleware via the Connector Transformation: Component connectors in platform independent application models are utilized to automatically assemble platform- and application specific middleware. As a result, AUTOSAR middleware becomes custom-tailored and hence light-weight and flexible. In addition, the described synthesis algorithm is capable of incorporating timing annotations via interface contracts at model level, and thus reflects upcoming ambitions to cover real-time constraints at middleware level within AUTOSAR. To prove our approach we successfully synthesized middleware for a demonstrator application and compared it to its conventional counterpart.
