This paper addresses the problem of measuring time in object-oriented event-driven real-time systems. Several possible implementations of the timing subsystem are considered. Some important consequences that an implementation can have on the overall time overhead are discussed. The paper proposes a modified multiple-rate policy of updating software timers. Timing ticks are distributed through a tree structure in a way that tends to minimize the overall overhead, while retaining a small variation of the overhead in different clock cycles. The paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of the described models. The analysis considers different exploitation conditions, in respect to the number of software timers and their resolutions.

Transcoding is an important technology which adapts the same multimedia object to diverse mobile appliances;thus, users' requests for a specified version of a multimedia object could be served by a more detailed version cached according to transcoding. Therefore, it is of particularly theoretical and practical necessity to determine the proper versions to be cached at a node such that the specified objective is achieved. In this paper, we address the problem of multimedia object placement. The performance objective is to minimize the total access cost by considering both transmission cost and transcoding cost. We present an optimal dynamic programming-based solution for this problem. The performance of the proposed solutions is evaluated with a set of carefully designed simulation experiments for various performance metrics over a wide range of system parameters. The simulation results show that our solution consistently and significantly outperforms comparison solutions in terms of all the performance metrics considered.

Web services provide the potential to offer interoperability of distributed business-to-business application integration between autonomous organisations, regardless of platforms, operating systems or languages. For both user and vendor organisations, this raises immediate problems of trust, security, privacy and prevention of malicious attacks. Until these problems are addressed and solved properly, the use of Web services will be severely restricted because no-one will trust them. We describe in this paper a service-oriented architecture and an Attack-Tolerant Information Retrieval (ATIR) service which tackles certain classes of privacy problems. In particular, we address the problem of protecting a user against malicious attacks upon an information service when the user retrieves some information from the service. Although there have been many theoretical solutions to certain aspects of this problem, the results have yet to be adapted to real systems. We report our experience of integrating the ATIR service with Taverna, a popular workflow system used amongst the UK e-Science/Grid computing community to support secure information retrieval in the biology context. Performance studies show that the overhead of ATIR server-side processing is trivial (< 5%) in comparison with the total processing time of the integrated Taverna. Our experimental results also show that the major processing overhead is caused by the Taverna enactor operations which consume no less than 50% of the total processing time.

Type-safe high-level languages such as Java have not yet found their way into the domain of deeply embedded systems, even though numerous attempts have been made to make these languages cost attractive. One major challenge that remains is the huge existing code base in many industries. Completely reengineering this code base is not viable for cost and time reasons. We present an approach that allows to isolatedly combine legacy software components and safe software components in an embedded system using the two most common communication idioms found in this domain. Our approach allows the developer to freely choose between hardware- and software-based isolation mechanisms. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by porting a non-trivial part of a real-world, hard real-time embedded avionics application. Our results show that the cost of this mixed-mode operation is on the same scale as the pure operation. © 2011 IEEE.

Predictable deployment and configuration (D&C) of components in response to dynamic environmental changes or system mode changes is essential for ensuring open distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) system real-time QoS. This paper provides three contributions to research on the predictability of D&C for component-based open DRE systems. First, we describe how the dependency relationships among different components and their criticality levels can cause deployment order inversion of tasks, which impedes deployment predictability. Second, we describe how to minimize D&C latency of mission-critical tasks with a multi-graph dependency tracing and graph recomposition algorithm called CaDAnCE. Third, we empirically evaluate the effectiveness of CaDAnCE on a representative open DRE system case study based on NASA Earth Science Enterprise's Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) mission system. Our results show that CaDAnCE avoids deployment order inversion while incurring negligible (<1%) performance overhead, thereby significantly improving D&C predictability.

Service-oriented distributed systems are internally loosely coupled in that the computation nodes are portable and reusable. They can be developed and maintained economically. Traditional middleware products enable the consistent operation on distributed objects and real-time communication. The middleware in a service-oriented distributed system provides more capabilities, such as analyzing data semantics, formulating data protocols, and defining event interfaces. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a middleware for service-oriented distributed systems. The relationship between the distributed object and the object proxy is briefly introduced. The functional requirements on the middleware for service-oriented distributed systems are analyzed. The operational, system, and technical architecture design of the middleware is outlined. The programming technique for implementing the middleware is presented by focusing on the XML-based textualization of distributed object proxies. The application of the middleware is demonstrated by building a distributed simulation system.

Source code generation from models (e.g., domain specific models) for distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems is intended to alleviate tedious, error-prone, and time consume tasks associated with manually hand-crafting the same code. When generating code from models for DRE system programming languages that accidentally support circular dependencies, e.g., the Interface Definition Language (IDL) and C++, it is necessary to resolve circular dependencies in order to generate valid and usable code. Moreover, it is important to do some automatically instead of requiring modelers to construct models that do not contain any circular dependencies, which is hard. This paper provides two contributions to research on source code generation from models for DRE systems. First, it presents A-Circle, an algorithm that automatically removes circular dependencies when generating source code from models for programming languages that inherently enable circular dependencies. Secondly, this paper quantitatively evaluates A-Circle when generating CORBA IDL files. The results show that A Circle algorithm is able to generate IDL files in linear-time. © 2011 IEEE.

Of several schemes proposed to handle the propagation of erroneous information among interacting processes in distributed and parallel computer systems, the distributed real-time conversation (DRC) scheme stands out in its fast forward recovery capability which is essential in safety-critical hard-real-time applications. However, previous formulations of the scheme remained at relatively abstract levels and practical models for their implementation in complex safety-critical real-time applications were not established before. The core approach in the DRC scheme is to make a group of computing stations cooperate in recovery from hardware and software faults that may occur during their interaction. In this paper we present a practical implementation model for the DRC scheme. A simple model of an anti-missile defense system is used to illustrate the main structuring principles of the DRC scheme and major components of the practical implementation model.

This work is a case study. This paper describes how we are provisioning QoS in a real-time distributed object platform dedicated to power plant control applications A previous experiment based on a modified Java-ChorusOS-ATM platform enhanced our knowledge on QoS based distributed object systems. We used RM-ODP/ReTINA as a distributed computing object model where time requirements are specified in terms of QoS parameters. Our goal is to achieve QoS provisioning with off-the-shelf CoS based products in real-time distributed object Architectures to be built. Low level building blocks of the architecture as communication networks and operating systems exist as CoS components. The current step of the project deals with distributed object platforms selection. But it is not so easy to choose a QoS-enabled off-the-shelf middleware.

This paper provides two contributions to the study of mechanisms for reducing the life-cycle costs of distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems. First, we present a mechanism-called a Quality Connector-that enables applications to specify the qualities of service that they require from their infrastructure, and then manages the operations that optimize the middleware to implement those requirements. Second, we show how Quality Connectors are being applied in practice to allocate communication resources automatically, for real-time CORBA event propagation. Although middleware that configures itself in response to quality of service (QoS) requests has been investigated and applied in general-purpose computing contexts, we believe that the present work, is among the first to put such capabilities into mission-critical DRE systems with stringent QoS requirements.
