Dynamic load balancing is a key factor in achieving high performance for large scale distributed simulations on grid infrastructures. In a grid environment, the available resources and the simulation's computation and communication behavior may experience run-time critical imbalances. Consequently, an initial static partitioning should be combined with a dynamic load balancing scheme to ensure the high performance of the distributed simulation. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic load balancing scheme for distributed simulations on a grid infrastructure. Our scheme is composed of an online network analyzing service coupled with monitoring agents and a run-time model repartitioning service. We present a hierarchical scalable adaptive JXTA service based scheme and demonstrate through simulation experiments that our proposed scheme exhibits better performance in terms of the simulation execution time.

Self-healing systems focus on how to reducing the complexity and cost of the management of dependability policies and mechanisms without human intervention. This position paper proposes a systematic approach to self-healing systems via dependable architecture and reflective middleware. Firstly, the differences between self-healing systems and traditional dependable systems are illustrated via the construction of, a dependable computing model. Secondly, reflective middleware is incorporated into the dependable computing model for investigating the feasibility and benefits of implementing self-healing systems by reflective middleware. Thirdly, dependable architectures are introduced for providing application specific knowledge related to self-healing. Fourthly, an architecture based deployment tool is implemented for deploying dependable architectures into heterogeneous and distribute environments. Finally, an architecture based reflective J2EE application server, called PKUAS, is implemented for interpreting and enforcing dependable architectures at runtime, that is, discovering or predicting and recovering or preventing failures automatically under the guide of dependable architectures.

The aim of this paper is to provide a mixed scheduling algorithm for the nearly dynamic tasks and periodic tasks. In this paper, we will present an object-oriented approach for servicing periodic tasks in real-time systems, where a set of nearly dynamic tasks is scheduled using the BP scheduling algorithm. A goal of this mixed scheduling algorithm is to guarantee the hard deadlines of all BP and periodic tasks. We will discuss an object-oriented scheduler from the view-point of the objects themselves as they function and interact with the BP scheduler. This mixed scheduling algorithm allow the real-time system designers to reason with confidence about timing constraints of highly dynamic behavior environments. © (2004) by the international Society for Computers and Their Applications All rights reserved.

distributed objects are increasingly becoming predominant with the widespread use of object-oriented technology. Coupled with object-oriented systems is the heterogeneity of computer systems that are interoperating together to form a large network such as the Internet. Within this distributed heterogeneous environment, objects are the main building blocks that form the communication of the distributed system. In real-time distributed environment, objects must deliver their services within given time constraints. In order to commit to performance constraints, a careful study and analysis of the software design is critical. Therefore, this research work focuses on restructuring distributed object oriented software to match the pipeline architecture. This technique provides the designer with a set of alternative solutions and the corresponding resource and communication cost while satisfying the system and computation constraints. The optimal solution that minimizes the system resources and the communication overheads will be also given. A search technique using genetic algorithm is used to scan the search space for the optimal software structure and the set of feasible ones. © (2001) by the international Society for Computers and Their Applications All rights reserved.

This paper investigates the use of object-oriented techniques for the specification and design of distributed multimedia applications (DMAs). DMAs are a class of software applications with a range of strong - often conflicting - requirements of dynamicity, interactivity, real-time synchronized processing of several media types, network distribution, high-performance, fault-tolerance, load balancing and security. The development of complex DMAs can benefit from the adoption of object design methods and distributed objects implementation technologies. The paper describes the use of two modeling approaches, based on the standard UML modeling language, and on the TRIO formal specification language, respectively. The problem of defining steps to move from the UML or TRIO specification to a CORBA IDL implementation is addressed too. An experimental distributed Video-on-Demand system is used throughout the paper as a case study.

While recently emerging middleware technologies such as CORBA and DCOM address the complexity of distributed programming, they cannot be directly applied to distributed control system design due to their excessive resource demand and inadequate communication models. We propose a new CORBA design for CAN-based distributed embedded control systems. Our design goal is to minimize its resource need and make it support group communication without losing the IDL (interface definition language) level compliance to the OMG standards. To achieve this, we develop a transport protocol on the CAN and a group communication scheme based on the well-known publisher/subscriber model. The protocol effectively realizes subject-based addressing and supports anonymous publisher/subscriber communication. We also customize the method invocation and message passing protocol, referred to as the general inter-ORB protocol (GIOP), of CORBA so that CORBA method invocations are efficiently serviced on a low-bandwidth network such as the CAN. This customization includes packed data encoding and variable-length integer encoding for compact representation of IDL data types. The new CORBA design clearly demonstrates that it is feasible to use CORBA in developing distributed embedded systems on real-time networks possessing severe resource limitations. © 2000 IEEE.

Interoperability of constituent systems is the primary challenge for a large-scale distributed Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) simulation activity. The grand challenge is to integrate, for the first time, all aspects of interoperability necessary not only to enable but to ensure interoperability throughout an large-scale LVC system. Previously, a handful of these aspects of interoperability have been partially addressed in isolation. Only an integrated solution of all aspects of interoperability into a computer-enforceable architecture will make possible attaining the goal of ensuring interoperability throughout a large-scale LVC activity. The enforceable nature of the LVC activity models implies that the models accurately reflect the "reality" of the LVC activity. Without enforcement, the complex nature of the myriads of components would tend to introduce inaccuracies into models, ultimately rendering those models useless. Actual enforcement of the models elevates the LVC software systems' usefulness to a level that would otherwise be unattainable in practice. Preparing for an LVC activity involves answering deceptively simple questions such as, "Will an individual piece of software work during this LVC activity?" At present, reliably answering such questions is impossible, because no detailed, precise, and accurate descriptions of the software or the LVC event exist. Other simple questions such as, "Which data collection systems are suitable for use in this LVC activity?" are equally difficult to answer reliably. This paper discusses the need for computer-enforceable models of individual software components as well as entire LVC activities, along with creating new extensions to the existing TENA object modeling language and to the TENA Middleware itself.

The real-time Systems Compiler: migrating event-triggered systems to time-triggered systems

In this paper, we present a prototype of the real-time Systems Compiler (RTSC). The RTSC is a compiler-based tool that enables the migration from event-triggered to time-triggered real-time systems. This is achieved by replacing the real-time systems architecture of a given real-time system. The real-time systems architecture governs the structural properties of the white-box view of a real-time system: how are tasks attached to events and how are dependencies between different tasks implemented. The RTSC uses an abstraction called Atomic Basic Blocks (ABBs) to hide the real-time systems architecture and capture all relevant dependencies of an event-triggered system in a global ABB-graph. The RTSC automatically extracts that ABB-graph from an event-triggered real-time system given as source code, transforms that ABB-graph appropriately, and maps it to a statically computed schedule that could be executed by standard time-triggered real-time operating systems. Important temporal properties of the physical environment of the real-time system needed for that transformation are stored in a system model provided as additional input to the RTSC. Furthermore, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and the operation of our prototype by transforming an event-triggered control application into a time-triggered equivalent. The paper documents progress to date on a research project, the goal of which is wartime event prediction. It describes the operational concept, the data mining environment, and data mining techniques that use Bayesian networks for classification. Key steps in the research plan are as follows: (1) implement machine learning;(2) test the trained networks;and (3) use the technique to support a battlefield commander by predicting enemy attacks. Data for training and testing the technique can be extracted from the object oriented database that supports the Integrated Marine Multi-Agent Command and Control System (IMMACCS). These data were derived from message traffic generated during US Marine Corps exercises. The class structure in the IMMACCS data model is especially well suited to support attack classification. © 2000 IEEE.
