distributed objects (DO) as defined by OMG's CORBA architecture provide a model for object-oriented parallel distributed computing. The parallelism in this model however is limited in that the distribution refers to the mappings of different objects to different hosts, and not to the distribution of any individual object. We propose in this paper an alternative model called Individually distributed object (IDO) which allows a single large object to be distributed over a network, thus providing a high level interface for the exploitation of parallelism inside the computation of each object which was left out of the distributed objects model. Moreover, we propose a set of functionally orthogonal operations for the objects which allow the objects to be recursively divided, combined, and communicate over recursively divided address space. Programming by divide-and-conquer is therefore effectively supported under this framework. The Recursive Individually distributed object (RIDO) has been adopted as the primary parallel programming model in the Brokered objects for Ragged-network Gigafiops (BORG) project at the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University, and applied to large-scale real-world problems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Exception handling in a complex concurrent and distributed system (e.g. one involving cooperating rather than just competing activities) is often a necessary, but a very difficult, task. No widely accepted models or approaches exist in this area. The object-oriented paradigm, for all its structuring benefits, and real-time requirements each add further difficulties to the design and implementation of exception handling in such systems. In this paper, we develop a general structuring framework based on the coordinated atomic (CA) action concept for handling exceptions in an object-oriented distributed system, in which exceptions in both the value and the time domain are taken into account. In particular, we attempt to attack several difficult problems related to real-time system design and error recovery, including action-level timing constraints, time-triggered CA actions, and time-dependent exception handling. The proposed framework is then demonstrated and assessed using an industrial real-time application-the Production Cell III case study.

This paper describes a replication algorithm for distributed real-time object-oriented databases in a static environment. All data requirements are specified a priori, and the algorithm creates replication transactions that copy remote data to a local site in order to guarantee that even, data request reads temporally valid data. The algorithm conditions are proven to be necessary and sufficient for providing this guarantee. Test results indicate that under most conditions, this replication strategy is better than total replication, which is a typical strategy used in distributed databases.

The adaptation of an operating system to an application is often needed to optimize the embedded code. Adaptation consists in removing the unneeded operating systems services and the dead code according to applications requirements. The resulting stripped operating system is smaller, safer and has better performance. This adaptation is usually done by hand for each application. As a result some dead code may remain unnoticed. The verification and the certification of the adapted operating system is difficult too: for each adaptation to an application, the certification must be redone and for the verification, a new model has to be designed with the well known gap problem between the model and the actual software. In this paper, we present a new approach based on formal methods to synthesize an Application-Specific real-time Operating System. Instead of removing services from the source code of an existing operating system, a formal model is used. All the functions of the operating system with the full control flow and control variables are modeled. According to an application model, unneeded services and part of control flow are removed from the model by using a reachability analysis. This guarantees no dead code remains. Moreover some properties may be checked on the pruned model to ensure the application behaves as expected. At last, the corresponding source code is generated from the model.

object tracking is an essential element of visual perception systems. It is used in advanced video surveillance systems (AVSS), autonomous vehicles, robotics, and many more. For applications such as autonomous robots, the system must be implemented on some embedded platform with limited computing performance and power. Furthermore, sufficiently fast response is required from the tracking system in order to perform some real-time tasks. Discriminative Correlation Filter (DCF) based tracking algorithms are popular for such applications, as they offer state-of-the-art performance while not being too computationally complex. In this paper, an FPGA implementation of the DCF tracking algorithm using convolutional features is presented. The ZCU104 board is used as a platform, and the performance is evaluated on the VOT2015 dataset. In contrast to other implementations that use HOG (Histogram of oriented Gradients) features, this implementation achieves better results for 64 x 64 filter size while being able to potentially operate at higher speeds (over 467 fps per scale).

Space and satellite systems are considered to be the most extreme environment to design for and are fraught with engineering difficulty. Performance metrics such as fault tolerance, reliability, pre-determinism and heritage are still high of the list of requirements for all missions. But with the advent of modern day electronics, greater computing capability and networking technologies have enabled research into distributed satellite systems, where multiple spacecraft work collaboratively to perform a mission. Leveraging from these technologies, a satellite can be considered one of many nodes in an autonomous system. This paper proposes the use of an Agent based computing platform to solve orbit dynamics problems leading to a highly mobile and decentralized system. The latest Agent platforms are compared and possible Agent applications are presented;specifically, distributed image compression and a novel topology reconfiguration scheme.

The recently adopted UML Profile for Scheduling, Performance and time (a.k.a. the RT Profile), has the potential to standardize terminology and practice within the real-time UML community, but its scope is still very limited; particularly its use in characterizing infrastructures, such as middleware and operating systems. This paper shows how the profile might be used to model the OSEK operating system standard, both in order to validate the profile's core concepts and to expand the set of artifacts described using the profile.

Dynamic reconfiguration of distributed software systems is nowadays gaining interest because of the emergence of dynamic IoT and smart applications as well as large scale dynamic infrastructures (e.g., Fog and Edge computing). When quality of service and experience is of prime importance, efficient reconfiguration is necessary, as well as performance predictability to decide when a reconfiguration should occur. This paper tackles the problem of efficient execution of a reconfiguration plan and its predictability with Concerto, a reconfiguration model supporting a high level of parallelism. Evaluation performed on synthetic cases and on two real production scenarios show that Concerto provides better performance than state-of-the-art systems with accurate time estimation.
