Today many embedded computer applications are developed under the assumptions that the hardware works always as described in the documentation, the operating system is free of design errors and the clients use the system as specified. These assumptions lead to systems that are fragile - they break if even a single transistor out of a billion transistors chip occasionally malfunctions or a sporadic Heisenbug [J. Gray, 1986] occurs in the operating system.

Embedded real-time systems are becoming increasingly complex due to ever increasing size and functionality so that complexity management is of growing importance, especially in dependable hard real-time systems development, where errors caused by complexity can have fatal consequences. This paper systematically characterizes different kinds of complexity: system-level complexity, component interface complexity, and component implementation complexity. The effects of the different kinds of complexity are described and it is explained why minimizing system-level complexity should be a principal goal of any distributed embedded real-time systems architecture. The concept of system-level components is introduced as a solution to the problem of system-level complexity during the integration process

The automotive industry has been late in introducing object oriented (OO) analysis, design, and programming, compared to many other businesses. This is partly due to the fact that OO programming has been considered too expensive in terms of computational resources, but also because there are elements in the application functions for which OO methods do not give sufficient support. Nevertheless, OO techniques provide many advantages, and we discuss how they can be used for automotive real time control applications. The suggested approach is holistic in the following respects: it treats functionality on the vehicle level rather than on individual control units; it includes both the embedded system and its environment; and it considers both hardware and software.

In this paper we present a new approach to distribute tasks connected by causal dependencies within a heterogeneous environment, e.g. several resources communicating with each other or a processor grid. Our approach uses an artificial hormone system for task distribution which is able to meet real-time constraints. Several enhancements of the artificial hormone system are made such as partial suppressing of tasks and distributed task termination.

A real-time database is a database in which both the data and the operations upon the data may have timing constraints. The design of this kind of database requires the introduction of new concepts to modelize both data structures and the dynamic behavior of the database. In this paper, we propose an UML2.0 profile, entitled UML-RTDB, allowing the design of structural model for a real-time database. One of the main advantages of UML-RTDB is its capacity to take into account real-time database properties through specialized concepts in rigourous, easy and expressive manner.

The real-time CORBA and minimum CORBA specifications are important steps towards defining standard-based middleware which can satisfy real-time requirements in an embedded system. This real-time middleware must be based on a real-time operating system (RTOS) and a real-time network. This article presents a new time-triggered Ethernet protocol that has been implemented under RTLinux. Furthermore it describes a real-time CORBA implementation called ROFES, which is based on this new real-time network.

We highlight major technical requirements for designing and developing future distributed multimedia information systems using Internet technology. The key requirements of this system are to allow users to access and search and to communicate multimedia documents consisting of text, audio, video and images. We emphasize the role of object-oriented technology for information management and real-time communication protocols to guarantee QoS. We present a reference architecture for a Web-based real-time distributed multimedia system which integrates enabling technologies including real-time streaming, multimedia indexing and searching and distributed object management.

Application programs are performed on clients and issue requests to object servers. The object servers then send responses to the clients. On the other hand, programs named agents move to object servers where the agents manipulate objects in a mobile agent approach. If agents complete manipulating objects in the servers, the agents move to other servers. If an agent conflicts with other agents on an object server, the agents negotiate with each other to resolve the conflict. If the servers are faulty, agents find another server. In addition, agents are replicated if they are faulty. In this paper, we discuss how to perform agents with different constraints on multiple object servers in the presence of server and agent faults.
