The oriented Bounding Box trees (OBB-trees) offer efficient means for real-time collision detection between geometric models. The efficiency of the OBB-tree in answering the queries depends mainly on the way the triangles are splitted and distributed to the child nodes. In this paper we examine four different partitioning methods for top-down construction of OBB-trees and compare their performance in three different types of queries: collision detection between two objects, finding the triangle closest to a given point and extremal point queries. In addition to the examined methods we also offer a method for determining and splitting disconnected sets of triangles at an early stage during the hierarchy construction.

real time distributed applications based on object oriented technology raise many complex issues, most of them still open. We elaborate on the reasons why traditional paradigms, found adequate for tackling simple problems, cannot help in addressing these complex issues. A detailed illustration is given with a problem in modular avionics, which has been addressed by resorting to proof based system engineering, an emerging discipline aimed at coping with real world problems complexity. Drawing from our experience with partners in industry, we report on why such paradigms and technologies as object orientation, distributed transactions, distributed architectures, transactional monitors, can be contemplated for the construction of real time distributed systems, provided that appropriate online decision making algorithms and protocols are resorted to.

Weapons System Open Architecture (WSOA) utilizes a distributed object computing foundation as a "bridge" to enable communication between disparate real-time systems in the redirection of strike assets. This open systems "bridge" connects legacy embedded mission systems and off-board C3I (command, control, communication and information) sources and systems. WSOA will establish the potential gains in warfighting capability due to the enabling technologies of collaborative planning, information mining, and adaptive embedded resource management. This paper focuses on the experiences and lessons learned in the WSOA demonstration program with CORBA middleware, pluggable protocols and Quality of Service (QoS) enforcement, management and verification.

This paper presents the affected set priority ceiling protocols (ASPCP) for concurrency control in real-time object-oriented systems. These protocols are based on a combination of semantic locking and priority ceiling techniques. This paper shows that the ASPCP protocols provide higher potential concurrency for object-oriented systems than existing priority ceiling protocols, while still bounding priority inversion and preventing deadlock.

CSP is a fundamental concept for developing software for distributed real time systems. The CSP paradigm constitutes a natural addition to object orientation and offers higher order multithreading constructs. The CSP channel concept that has been implemented in Java deals with single- and multi-processor environments and also takes care of the real time priority scheduling requirements. For this, the notion of priority and scheduling has been carefully examined and as a result it was reasoned that priority scheduling should be attached to the communicating channels rather than to the processes. In association with channels, a priority based parallel construct is developed for composing processes: hiding threads and priority indexing from the user. This approach simplifies the use of priorities for the object oriented paradigm. Moreover, in the proposed system, the notion of scheduling is no longer connected to the operating system but has become part of the application instead.

object-oriented techniques have been increasingly used during the development of real-time industrial automation systems, both in modeling and simulation frameworks used in problem domain analysis and requirements engineering, as well as for implementing SCADA (Supervisor.), Control And Data Acquisition) systems. However, mostly commercial available CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) tools do not supports the automatic code generation for SCADA systems. This paper proposes an architecture for integrating supervisory tools into object-oriented frameworks for industrial automation applications. The ideas proposed have been implemented and integrated with an object-oriented framework for real-time industrial automation applications. real case studies have been developed, including the supervisory control of a chemical plant's prototype and the development of man-machine interfaces for food industry (pork processing plant).

Increasingly the need for protecting information from unauthorized access has lead to more attention in the field of information security. Access control mechanisms have been in place for the last four decades and are a powerful tool utilized to ensure security. In a real-time distributed computing environment, systems have to meet timing constraints for time sensitive applications, such as obtaining financial quotes and operating command and control systems. However, real-time distributed computing environment security is yet to be investigated. Earlier work examined a time Triggered Message Triggered object (TMO) scheme that provides real-time services in a distributed computing environment secured by applying a Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). In this paper we describe the application of a sophisticated Usage Control (UCON) model for a TMO and subsequently design an application that utilizes a Coordinated Anti-Missile Interceptor Network (CAMIN) system. This application is a secure CAMIN based upon a secure TMO that applies a real time UCON (RT-UCON) in the CAMIN environment

Complex soft real time distributed object systems require object profiling, scheduling and migration algorithms to respond to transient changes in the load or in the availability of the resources. We have developed a resource management system for a soft real time distributed object system that is based on a three level feedback loop which employs a profiling algorithm that monitors the usage of the resources, a least laxity scheduling algorithm that schedules the tasks, and hot spot and cooling algorithms that allocate and migrate objects to balance the load on the resources. The resource management system consists of a single (but possibly replicated and distributed) resource manager, and profilers and schedulers located on each of the processors in the distributed system.

The autonomy of various subsystem in complex real-time distributed computer systems (DCS's) is a highly desired attribute. Highly autonomous subsystems enable concurrent and largely independent testing/verification and maintenance of the subsystems. In recent years, we formulated two system structuring techniques which could be used as fundamental tools for enhancing the subsystem autonomy: (1) the RTO.k object structuring scheme and (2) the HU-DF inter-process-group communication scheme. Three approaches of using the above two tools for enhancement of the three different basic types of autonomy in an object, (1) relocation autonomy, (2) service timing autonomy, and (3) data acceptance autonomy, are presented.

Java, with its pragmatic approach to object orientation and enhancements over C, got very popular for desktop and server application development. The productivity increment of up to 40% compared with C++ [E. Quinn et al., (1998)] attracts also embedded systems programmers. However, standard Java is not practical on these usually small devices. This paper presents the status of restricted Java environments for embedded and real-time systems. For missing definitions, additional profiles are proposed. Results of the implementation on a Java processor show that it is possible to develop applications in pure Java on resource constraint devices
