This paper proposes a new method for programming and controlling distributed tasks. Applications declare behavior patterns that are used to automatically predict and reserve resources needed by applications in a heterogeneous distributed environment. The paper introduces a stochastic quality sampling driven scheduler and a rendezvous mechanism for matching pre-planned activities with actual payload data. The system is built around the first real-time SOAP implementation, also presented in this paper. It extends the XML Web services interoperability benefits that have proven themselves in e-business into two new areas: embedded and real-time. The paper presents an efficient implementation that runs on common microcontrollers and other computers.

Ravenscar-Java is a subset of Java (augmented by the real-time specification for Java) targeted at high-integrity real-time systems. It has recently been extended to support multiple applications of mixed criticality on the same Java platform. A two level scheduling model is used to achieve temporal isolation between applications. This paper presents the general schedulability analysis for the approach, describes how the approach can be implemented using standard real-time POSIX facilities, illustrates how the analysis can be modified to take into account the implementation, and uses the prototype implementation to evaluate the accuracy of the analysis models.

Dynamic software reconfiguration is a useful tool to adapt and maintain software systems. In most approaches, the system has to be stopped while the reconfiguration is in progress. This is not suitable for real-time systems, even on small-embedded systems. Timing constraints must be met even while the system is reconfiguring. Our approach is based on the real-time middleware OSA+. Our main objective is to be able to reconfigure services during run-time, with a predictable and predefined blackout time (the time the systems does not react due to the reconfiguration). Three different approaches concerning the blocking or non-blocking state of a service are presented. These approaches can be used to realize a tradeoff between the reconfiguration time and the blackout time.

Programming and composing deterministic distributed real-time systems is becoming increasingly important, yet remains difficult and error-prone. An innovative approach to such systems is the general-form timeliness-guaranteed design paradigm, which is the basis for the time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) programming and system specification scheme. This approach was originally developed for Windows programming environments and operating systems. This paper describes the techniques needed to make TMO support the Linux operating system and reports the resulting performance characteristics.

Java's popularity, facilities and platform independence have made it an interesting language for the real time community. The RTSJ (real-time specification for Java) is a Java extension to allow the development of real-time systems. RTSJ does not supply any support for the development of real-time distributed systems. The goal of this work is to define support for this type of systems, based on RMI (remote method invocation). However, the high diversity of real-time systems implies that there is not a single RT-RMI definition that satisfies their requirements. This article presents the basics of two real-time RMI approaches: safety critical RMI, to support hard real-time and high integrity requirements, and quality of service RMI for soft real-time systems, which is based on resource reservation to provide some minimal required quality.

To ensure global serializability, traditional distributed database systems implement both concurrency control and transaction commit protocols. In a distributed database system, a commit protocol guarantees the uniform commitment of distributed transaction execution. In the last decade, several extensions to the transaction model adopted in traditional database systems have been proposed in order to support the functional and performance requirements of emerging advanced applications such as CAD/CAM, large software design projects and object-oriented databases. Nested transaction models have been shown to play an important role in such applications, however, these models are not yet fully studied. In this paper, our contributions in the field of real-time nested transactions are two fold: (i) we propose a hierarchical and flat protocols for real-time nested transactions, called 2PC-RT-NT, and (ii) we implement a lock mechanism, called 2LP-NT-HP, to solve the data conflicts problem between nested transactions.

In this paper, we propose an architecture for adaptive real-time workflow-based collaborative system. Such a system is needed to support real-time communication and sharing of information among predefined or ad hoc team of users collaborating with each other for the execution of their respective tasks in the workflow. A key requirement for real-time workflow system is to provide the right data to the right person at the right time. In addition, the workflow needs to be reconfigured if a subtask of a workflow cannot be executed within the due time. We use the generalized temporal role-based access control (GTRBAC) model to capture the real-time dependencies of such workflow applications. In addition, support for triggers in GTRBAC allows dynamic adaptation of workflow based on the occurrence of certain events. Such adaptations may include rescheduling of workflow tasks, reassignment of users to scheduled tasks based on their availability and skill level, and abortion of incomplete tasks.

Atomicity (or linearizability) is a commonly used consistency criterion for distributed services and objects. Although atomic object implementations are abundant, proving that algorithms achieve atomicity has turned out to be a challenging problem. In this paper, we initiate the study of systematic ways of verifying distributed implementations of atomic objects, beginning with read/write objects (registers). Our general approach is to replace the existing operational reasoning about events and partial orders with assertional reasoning about invariants and simulation relations. To this end, we define an abstract state machine that captures the atomicity property and prove correctness of the object implementations by establishing a simulation mapping between the implementation and the specification automata. We demonstrate the generality of our specification by showing that it is implemented by three different read/write register constructions: the message-passing register emulation of Attiya, Bar-Noy and Dolev, its optimized version based on real time, and the shared memory register construction of Vitanyi and Awerbuch. In addition, we show that a simplified version of our specification is implemented by a general atomic object construction based on the Lamport's replicated state machine algorithm.

One of the problems with Java for real-time systems is the unpredictable behavior of garbage collection (GC). GC introduces unexpected load and causes undesirable delays for real-time applications. In this paper, we propose a technique that reduces and bounds the memory requirements for real-time Java programs. This technique can eliminate or reduce the need for GC and allows for a more predictable execution behavior and efficient utilization of the available memory. A theoretical model is presented and a number of benchmark tests are used to evaluate this technique in PERC, NewMonics' real-time JVM, and Sun's JVM. The results show that in some cases GC can be eliminated and an application's execution time decreases and becomes more predictable.

Organic computing is becoming the new vision for the design of complex systems, satisfying human needs for trustworthy systems that behave life-like by adapting autonomously to dynamic changes of the environment, and have self-x properties as postulated for autonomic computing. Organic computing is a response to the threatening view of being surrounded by interacting and self-organizing systems which may become unmanageable, showing undesired emergent behavior. Major challenges for organic system design arise from the conflicting requirements to have systems that are at the same time robust and adaptive, having sufficient degrees of freedom for showing self-x properties but being open for human intervention and operating with respect to appropriate rules and constraints to prevent the occurrence of undesired emergent behavior.
