Embedded real-time systems with dynamic resource management capabilities are able to adapt to changing resource requirements, resource availability, the occurrence of faults and environmental changes. This enables better resource utilization, more flexibility and increased dependability. Depending on the application domain, reconfiguration decisions must be found and applied within temporal bounds. Although semantic techniques are used to react to unexpected events in standard IT systems, they exhibit a computational complexity and temporal unpredictability that is not suitable for real-time systems. This paper describes a temporally predictable framework for reconfigurable embedded real-time systems. It uses a service-oriented approach to dynamically reconfigure component interactions. Knowledge about the system structure and semantics is provided in a system ontology with relevant information for embedded real-time systems (e.g., transfer delay times, accuracy of relations). The ontology allows to automatically generate service substitutes by exploiting implicit redundancy in the system. Furthermore, an algorithm is presented that searches the ontology for semantically equivalent implementations of failed services. The process of substitution search and substitute service generation is demonstrated with an example from the automotive domain.

This work is motivated by the needs to synchronize task executions where tasks might use semaphores to protect their critical sections and run over accelerators. In particular, the Priority Ceiling Protocol is extended to manage priority inversion caused by accelerator usages. By recognizing the difference between an accelerator and a semaphore, higher-priority tasks are less likely blocked by lower-priority tasks, due to their requests for an accelerator. In particular, blocking that will not contribute to any deadlock and/or chained blocking is allowed in a managed way, with an objective to maximize the utilization of accelerators. A series of experiments is then conducted to derive insights to task synchronization when accelerators might be used.

Fault-tolerance in distributed cyber-physical systems involves a close interplay between the physical system: the 'plant' to be controlled and the distributed computing layer that controls it. In this paper, a systematic approach for designing resilient decentralized control applications is presented that considers both the cyber and physical faults and how they affect each other (if at all). It establishes a formal methodology for system design and then illustrates its use in an example application related to the power grid.

Although high-level real-time distributed computing objects are generally written in forms independent of execution platforms, input and output (I/O) activities involving peripherals are inherently platform-dependent. Yet, writing parts of real-time objects for controlling peripherals should be done in forms compatible with the adopted real-time object programming styles. Basic issues are discussed in the context of an object-oriented real-time programming scheme called the time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme. A desirable goal here is to facilitate both commanding and reactive control of peripherals in TMOs in general forms while enabling relatively easy analysis of the timing behavior of such TMOs. This paper presents several techniques to meet these requirements.

Fault-tolerant real-time scheduling algorithm is one of the most important means to ensure the timeliness and high availability characteristics of fault-tolerant real-time systems. Existing scheduling models for periodic real-time task in heterogeneous platforms typically require the number of processors in the systems to be determined in advance;hence prohibit the scalability and the performance of distributed systems. The algorithms based on these models also require a large number of schedubility tests which lead to long execution time. To address these problems, we propose a primary and backup replica partition based fault-tolerant scheduling algorithm (PBPFT) based on a scalable scheduling model using heterogeneity that does not have to determine the scale of the distributed system in advance. The PBPFT approach also takes advantage of backup copy overlapping and phasing delay techniques to minimize system redundancy, and adopts the processor grouping technique to simplify algorithm complexity. Comprehensive experiments are conducted, and the results validate high resource utilization and commendable performance of our proposed approach.

Agent oriented programming(AOP)([2]) is a special kind of object-oriented programming. It can be worked out best for open systems and has the potentials to become a very attractive technique in the future. In this paper, we describe a specification and programming language-SPLAW. The syntax and operational semantics of SPLAW are presented, and by means of labeled transition system, the proof theory is also provided. SPLAW is based on KQML, the standard infer-agent communication language, which makes it possible for agents written in SPLAW to interoperate with of her agents obeying KQML.

In distributed real-time systems, when resource cannot meet workload demand, some jobs have to be removed from further execution. The decision as to which job to remove directly influences the system computation efficiency, i.e., the ratio between computation contributed to successful completions of real-time jobs and total computation contributed to the execution of jobs that may or may not be completed. The paper presents two job removal policies which aim at maximizing system's computation efficiency for distributed real-time applications where the applications' end-to-end deadlines must be guaranteed. Experiments based on benchmark applications generated by TGFF [1] are conducted and compared with recent work in the literature. The results show clear benefits of the developed approaches - they can achieve as much as 2 0 % computation efficiency improvement.

This paper describes a replication algorithm for distributed real-time object-oriented databases in a static environment. All data requirements are specified a priori, and the algorithm creates replication transactions that copy remote data to a local site in order to guarantee that every data request reads temporally valid data. The algorithm conditions are proven to be necessary and sufficient for providing this guarantee. Test results indicate that under most conditions, this replication strategy is better than total replication, which is a typical strategy used in distributed databases.

real-time computing is becoming an enabling technology for many important distributed applications such as flexible manufacturing, multimedia, robotics and process control. Traditionally, real-time systems have been realized as isolated embedded systems. Unfortunately, this approach does nor longer suffice for future complex systems in the application scenarios mentioned above. In this situation, the use of an object-oriented design paradigm greatly reduces the complexity of the system while improving reusability and manageability. Furthermore, the surrounding IT-infrastructure is more a,ld more accessible through object-oriented interfaces (e.g. CORBA). In addition, object-oriented modeling allows reflecting the dynamic characteristics of the applications mentioned above by instantiating objects dynamically. In order to meet the real-time requirements in such an environment, static scheduling is not sufficient since many non-predictable resource conflicts influence execution times. Therefore, the most distinguishing requirement of these complex heterogeneous systems is the need of the computing system to dynamically adapt to dynamically changing conditions. Little work has been done on integrating object-oriented system design with resource allocation algorithms that are flexible enough to cope,vith this new requirement. This paper presents an approach for an adaptive object-oriented system with integrated monitoring, dynamic execution rime prediction and scheduling. It explains how this approach is applied to CORBA and C++.

Many engineers are still reluctant to adopt advanced object-oriented technologies (such as high modularity: dynamic binding, automatic garbage collection, etc.) for embedded systems with real-time constraints, because of their supposed inefficiency. We set ourselves into the context of building telecommunication systems with a standard object-oriented analysis and design approach. We describe how we use relevant design patterns, followed with an implementation in a pure object-oriented language (Eiffel) to conciliate the needed efficiency with the benefits of the object-oriented approach - flexibility dynamic configurability maintenability portability, etc. We discuss a case study. based on the implementation of SMDS (Switched Multi-megabits Data Service) servers featuring high-throughput and low-delay transmissions and respecting the real-time constraints of SMDS.
