Heuristic algorithms have enjoyed increasing interests and success in the context of utility accrual (UA) scheduling. However, few analytical results, such as bounds on task-level and system-level accrued utilities are known. In this paper, we propose the S-UA algorithm that can provide probabilistic bounds on task-level accrued utilities. Lower bound on system-level accrued utility ratio (AUR) is also derived and maximized by S-UA.

Code generation from hybrid system models is a promising approach to producing reliable embedded systems. This approach presents new challenges as the precise semantics of the model are hard to capture in the code. A framework for generating code was introduced for single threaded/processor environments. We extend it by considering code generation for distributed environments. We also define criteria for faithful implementation of the model. To this end, we define faulty and missed transitions. For preventing faulty transitions, we build on the idea of instrumentation we have developed for sound simulation of hybrid systems. Finally, we present sufficient conditions to avoid missed transitions and provide examples.

The widespread use of mobile and wireless computing platforms is leading to a growing interest on dependability issues. Several research studies have been conducted on dependability of mobile environments, but none of them attempted to identify system bottlenecks and to quantify dependability measures. This paper proposes a distributed automated infrastructure for monitoring and collecting spontaneous failures of the Bluetooth infrastructure, which is nowadays more and more recognized as an enabler for mobile systems. Information sources for failure data are presented, and preliminary experimental results are discussed.

Web services form a new distributed computing paradigm. Collaborative verification and validation are important when Web services from different vendors are integrated together to carry out a coherent task. This paper presents a new approach to verify Web services by model checking the process model of OWL-S (Web ontology language for Web services) and to validate them by the test cases automatically generated in the model checking process. We extend the BLAST, a model checker that handles control flow model naturally, to handle the concurrency in OWL-S. We also propose enhancement in OWL-S and PDDL (Planning Domain Definition Language) to facilitate the automated test case generation. Experiments on realistic examples are provided to illustrate the process.

The stringent performance requirements of distributed realtime embedded systems often require highly optimized implementations of middleware services. Performing such optimizations manually can be tedious and error-prone. This paper proposes a model-driven approach to generate customized implementations of event ordering services in the context of component based systems. Our approach is accompanied by a number of tools to automate the customization. Given an application App, an event ordering service Order and a middleware platform P, we provide tools to analyze high-level specifications of App to extract information relevant to event ordering and to use the extracted application information to obtain a customized service, Order(App), with respect to the application usage.

The growing complexity of today's embedded real-time systems demands new methods and tools in order to manage the problems of design, analysis, integration and validation of complex systems. This paper describes an object-oriented platform-based design process for real-time embedded systems. The proposed approach promotes a smooth transition from high-level UML specification to implementation, which is composed by hardware and software components. The transition from higher to lower abstraction levels is facilitated by the use of an OO realtime API, whose underlying facilities can be optimized according to the application needs and selected platform. An integrated toolset is used to support the intermediate steps of the design process. In order to illustrate the proposed approach and related toolset the design of an embedded real-time automation system for an "intelligent" wheelchair is presented.

To realize location-based services, it is essential to handle the extreme situation that must cope with a very large volume, at least millions, of moving items. In this paper, we describe a location information system prototype of GALIS, which is a cluster-based scalable distributed computing system architecture which consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone. The proposed system contains all of the major computing nodes of GALIS architecture and is developed as a middleware on top of commercial main-memory database engines and spatial database engines, for short-term data and long-term data processing, respectively. To show the usefulness of our system, some experimental results showing clear advantages of distributed computing are also explained.

While the conventional remote method invocation mechanism has been considered for a long time as the primary approach for facilitating interactions among real-time objects, a multicast support mechanism has been recognized in recent years as an attractive supplement, if not a favored approach, in many applications. One highly promising concrete formulation of a multicast mechanism and an associated programming model is the real-time multicast and memory-replication channel (RMMC). This paper presents an API set designed for facilitating easy use of RMMCs and a middleware subsystem devised to support RMMCs. An experimental study performed to validate the RMMC support facility and check the performance of a TMO-structured multimedia application which uses an RMMC, is also discussed.

This paper illustrates an industrial application of a performance validation methodology, which integrates software and resource models in a UML-RT development environment. The methodology is successfully applied on a synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) telecommunication system modeled and simulated using the Rose real time toolset. The case study demonstrates the validity of the methodology, and it is an opportunity to refine the mechanisms of the methodology as well as to extend its scope. One of the key factors that the case study highlights is the concept of "transparency", i.e. the ability to apply a performance validation methodology without deeply modifying the software development process and environment.

Transcoding is an important technology which adapts the same multimedia object to diverse mobile appliances; thus, users' requests for a specified version of a multimedia object could be served by a more detailed version cached according to transcoding. Therefore, it is of particularly theoretical and practical necessity to determine the proper versions to be cached at a node such that the specified objective is achieved. In this paper, we address the problem of multimedia object placement. The performance objective is to minimize the total access cost by considering both transmission cost and transcoding cost. We present an optimal dynamic programming-based solution for this problem. The performance of the proposed solutions is evaluated with a set of carefully designed simulation experiments for various performance metrics over a wide range of system parameters. The simulation results show that our solution consistently and significantly outperforms comparison solutions in terms of all the performance metrics considered.
