We present a new class of multimedia applications where the exploitation of the principle of global-time-based coordination of distributed actions (TCoDA) is compelling. In these applications, multiple small-footprint PCs, each equipped with its own speakers, act as instrument players or singers forming an ensemble. Each player PC obtains its piece of the musical audio data over an Ethernet network from a central server containing all necessary audio files. An important requirement is thus to make multiple specialized players, e.g., violin player, cello player, piano player, etc., perform globally synchronous play of their responsible pieces of the music. Moreover, to enable fast start of the requested music play, the musical data are streamed from the server to each player in a pipelined fashion so that while each player is playing one part of the music, the next part may be arriving over the network. Efficient implementation techniques based on the TMO programming scheme are then presented. This digital music ensemble application turns out to be an interesting cost-effective means of evaluating the QoS of the middleware supporting TCoDA. A prototype implementation of a digital music ensemble system was relatively easily realized by use of the TMO programming scheme.

Location based services are becoming essential feature of context-awareness in ubiquitous computing. Reflective distribute component programming model is proposed to systematically provide location to location based services (LBS). We integrate distributed component technology and reflection to develop localization capability as middleware service. Concept of meta object protocols (Reflection) is used in different way than traditional reflective mechanisms. It deals with the state of the component that is not inside the component rather resides outside of it, namely extrinsic. This component model provides the basis for middleware architecture to support location providing service at design, implementation and run time. We describe the methodology we used to build location-awareness as middleware service based upon our reflective component model.

The development of complex industrial distributed systems is highly benefited from distributed object computing middleware such as CORBA. Such applications demand a high degree of reliability, and need to be resilient to faults. The OMG has addressed these requirements as part of the fault tolerant CORBA (FT-CORBA) specification. The specification handles single point of failures in CORBA applications by redundancy, fault detection and recovery. This paper presents the building and evaluation of a FT-CORBA infrastructure based on a GPL licensed ORB. The infrastructure is a collection of CORBA services that provides fault tolerance to CORBA applications. Further, fault tolerance at the network card, switch and link level is added to increase system reliability. An evaluation of this infrastructure is done with a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system and fault tolerant local area network emulation (LANE) based asynchronous transfer mode (FTATM) network is presented.

Explosive advances in communication technologies that have occurred since 1993 have given birth to rapidly growing demands for new-generation distributed computing (DC) applications, all geared toward realization of better and better ubiquitous computing societies. Economic and reliable construction of new-generation DC applications has thus become an issue of national interests in all advanced nations. What is needed is a new-generation DC software engineering technology which is at least multiple times more effective in constructing new-generation DC applications than the currently practiced technologies are. In particular, this author believes that a new-generation building-block (BB), which is much more advanced than the current-generation DC object provided in languages C++, Java, and C#, is needed. Such a BB should enable systematic and economic construction of DC applications that are capable of taking critical actions with 100-microsecond-level or even 1-microsecond-level timing accuracy, fault tolerance, and security enforcement while being easily expandable and taking advantage of all sorts of network connectivity. Some directions considered worth pursuing for finding such BBs are discussed.

The distributed time-triggered simulation scheme: Core principles and supporting execution engine

distributed real-time simulation is a young technology field but its practice is under increasing demands. In recent years the author and his collaborators have been establishing a new approach called the distributed time-triggered simulation (DTS) scheme which is conceptually simple and easy to use but widely applicable. The concept was initiated in the course of developing a new-generation object-oriented real-time programming scheme called the time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme. Some fundamental issues inherent in distributed real-time simulation that were learned during recent experimental studies are discussed along with some approaches for resolving the issues. An execution engine developed to support both the TMOs engaged in control computation and the TMOs engaged in DTS is also discussed along with its possible extensions that will enable significantly larger-scale DTSs.

real-time (RT) applications are designed to control systems that are inherently parallel. For easing development, abstractions are mandatory to model this concurrency. To achieve this goal, the real-time object paradigm is proposed. It is used to demonstrate how to separate functional and concurrency concerns ensuring also high-level abstraction for parallelism modeling.

Traditionally, real-time requirements are expressed by means of deadlines, which are imposed by the environment on the system. This approach, however, is not well suited for expressing real-time requirements on the interaction between objects;such as found in distributed systems supporting autonomy of objects. This paper presents a coherent framework in which real-time requirements for such interacting objects can be expressed Two interrelated system layers are considered together: the communication layer and the distributed programming layer that describes how interactions between the objects are organized In particular, the paper evaluates the relationship between real-time requirements and real-time activities in distributed object-oriented systems.

The application of new technologies and programming tools represents a challenge and an economic risk for companies, which not all are prepared to assume. This paper presents the application of RT-CORBA in the development of software for Nuclear Power Plant Simulators used for the training of future operators in a safe way. The developed software has allowed the adaptation of previous simulation software to new methodologies and standards;and the creation of new applications, aiming at the building of reusable components with real-time constraints in future projects.

For a long time embedded real-time systems have been designed as far as possible in a static manner. This means that they have been treated as pre-designed, off-line analysed, off-line mapped onto target systems, supported by customized but at run-time static real-time operating systems (RTOS), running on pre-assigned HW platforms. In this contribution some arguments for introducing more dynamics into real-time applications are given. Such dynamics finally may result in so called Autonomic Systems. When building autonomic real-time systems, specific support is needed. In this contribution some examples for such support are provided: Modelling techniques for distributed, self-modifying real-time systems, self modifying real-time operating systems, and usage self-modifying HW platforms.
