In this paper we present a test framework for specifying, executing, and evaluating function (black-box) tests for I/O control blocks that are part of a Matlab/Simulink based rapid-prototyping (RP) development environment for distributed control applications for the time-triggered network protocol TTP/C. The framework uses the RP environment to create embedded test applications which are then executed in a physical test network. In doing so the test application itself acts as a test driver for the required I/O operations. Results from this application are then compared to reference results that are created by the framework from the simulation and from the test specification. Tests are specified independently of the programming language using a format that was designed for ease-of-use and extensive reuse of components in mind. Concluding we present an implementation of this framework in a resource constrained real-world corporate environment, discussing problems, design decisions, and experiences gained during its development and use

QoS-enabled component middleware solutions can help reduce the programming complexity of configuring real-time aspects, such as priorities and rates of invocation. However, few empirical studies have been conducted to guide distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) system developers in choosing among alternative configuration mechanisms and performance optimization techniques in practice. This paper makes three contributions to research on QoS-enabled component middleware for DRE systems in the context of the component-integrated ACE ORB (CIAO). First, it describes the design of CIAO's static component configuration mechanisms, which enhance configurability by avoiding features that are not supported by key real-time platforms, while reducing run-time overhead and footprint. Second, it compares the performance of dynamic and static configuration mechanisms in CIAO to help guide the selection of suitable configuration mechanisms based on specific requirements of each DRE system. Third, it presents an empirical comparison of CIAO's static configuration mechanisms to the static configuration mechanisms in Boeing's PRISM avionics component middleware solution.

Successful development of large-scale complex and distributed real-time systems commonly relies on models developed separately for simulation studies and software implementation. Systems theory provides sound modeling principles to characterize structural and behavioral aspects of systems across time and space. The behavior of these models can be observed using simulation protocols that can correctly interpret time-based logical dynamics. Similarly, object-orientation theories and software architecture principles enable modeling static and dynamic behavior of systems. While models described either in system-theoretic or object-orientated languages may be used for both software design and simulation modeling, each has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, a class of system-theoretic modeling approach called Discrete-event System Specification (DEVS) provides an appropriate basis to develop simulation models exhibiting concurrent and distributed behavior. Similarly, the Unified Modeling Language with real-time (UML-RT) constructs can be used to develop software design models that can be implemented and executed. Since software models are not suitable to be used as simulation models and simulation models may not adequately lend themselves to serve as software design blueprints, it is important to examine these approaches. We show some of the key shortcomings of these simulation and software design modeling approaches by developing some detailed specifications and implementation of a coffee machine with a focus on their treatment of logical and physical time.

object-oriented methods are known for their capabilities to encapsulate and manage core concerns of complex software systems. However, they are inadequate in discerning and separating a variety of other cross-cutting concerns. In particular, for distributed systems, a number of important concerns such as synchronization, logging, and security, should be sufficiently treated in the design phase of the software lifecycle in order to ensure high system quality. Often these concerns tend to be overlooked at the design level and consequently scattered across multiple system modules during implementation. Consequently it becomes difficult to connect the set of requirements with the system structure, thus system traceability is reduced. This paper proposes an extension to the function-class decomposition (FCD) method, that is a hybrid method of structured analysis and OO approach, by integrating the concepts of "aspect". "Aspect" is an abstraction mechanism that emerged in recent years from the aspect-oriented programming (AOP) community. This extended method supports separation of functional and non-functional concerns by maintaining two primary views (function-class view and aspect view) at the design stage, and demonstrates the iterative process by applying it to the development of an example system called M-Net that is an Internet-based real-time distributed conferencing system.

Some applications are naturally divided into stages. Pipelining is the best architecture to adopt these kinds of applications in order to obtain better performance. In these architectures, evaluating the timing behavior of different stages is very important especially for real time applications. The accuracy of the time evaluation depends strongly on the ability to model and analyze the features of the target software. Most of the recent applications are object oriented (OO). Analyzing the performance of OO software is a challenge due to the interactions among many objects created from different classes. This fact leads to many bypassing communication in the pipeline structure in a feed-forward pattern. In this paper, we present a performance model that analyzes and evaluates the execution and communication times of OO software that runs on pipeline architecture. The model realizes both the feed-forward and the bypassing communication.

The development of training environments for the operations and maintenance of nuclear power plants is a long process where many components are not reused due to specific characteristics of each power plant. This paper presents an environment formed by a simulation kernel with a set of tools aiming at building reusable components. The simulators are being used for the real-time training of future operators in a safe way and they are based on a complex architecture of simulation models with real-time constraints involving many different applications where modern object-oriented methodologies and technologies have been applied. Additionally, we present a new real-time component model under development for the building of new applications. © 2004, UK Simulation Society. All rights reserved.

We present a system level description mechanism based on UML-notations from which one can automatically extract SystemC code. Our modelling framework is based on a restricted set of UML diagram types and some standard extensions influenced by the communication infrastructure of SystemC. The system specifications are developed using the UML-compatible tool, Rhapsody (2004). We then translate the internal representation of the design generated by Rhapsody into SystemC code. The extensions we have implemented using the stereotype feature of the Rhapsody tool pull up the communication infrastructure and timing features of SystemC to the UML-level. Consequently, we can describe executable platforms at the UML-level as well as translate UML-based application descriptions to SystemC level.

In this paper we present The realtime Platform Middleware (RTPM), an architecture for prototyping realtime multimodal I/O projects. Multimodal applications often require a distributed implementation to meet disparate temporal and platform needs. RTPM provides an extendable, device-independent, network-transparent interface to a set of user I/O devices which eases application integration across different operating systems. RTPM consists of a framework based on Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and a custom virtual device abstraction that exports real devices' functionality to user processes. It offers two mechanisms (client/server and consumer/supplier) for communication between user processes. This paper describes the architecture's objectives and implementation, provides examples of its use and analyzes its performance in some typical haptic application configurations.

Component middleware technologies such as the CORBA component model (CCM), J2EE (Alur et al., 2001), and .NET, were developed to address many limitations like interdependencies between services and object interfaces, limited re-use, of first-generation middleware technologies such as CORBA 2.x, XML, and SOAP (Snell and McLeod, 2001). These component technologies have addressed a wide range of application domains, but unfortunately for distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems, the focus of these technologies has been primarily on functional and not quality of service (QoS) properties. Research on QoS-aware component models such as the CIAO project (Wang et al. 2003) shows that there is a fundamental difference between configuration of functional and QoS properties even within such a unified component model: the dominant decomposition of functional properties is essentially object-oriented, while the dominant decomposition of QoS properties is essentially aspect-oriented. In this paper, we describe how a focus on aspect frameworks for configuring QoS properties both complements and extends QoS-aware component models. This paper makes three main contributions to the state of the art in DRE systems middleware. First, it describes a simple but representative problem for configuring QoS aspects that cut across architectural layers, system and distribution boundaries, which motivates our focus on aspect frameworks. Second, it provides a formalization of that problem using first order logic nfrastructure configuration logic - which both guides the design of aspect configuration infrastructure, and offers a way to connect these techniques with model-integrated computing (Ledeczi et al. 2001) approaches to further reduce the programming burden on DRE system developers. Third, it describes alternative mechanisms to ensure correct configuration of the aspects involved, and notes the phases of the DRE system lifecycle at which each such configuration mechanism is most ap
