This paper presents the design and implementation of distributed object-oriented Web-based Simulation (DOWS). DOWS is an object-oriented simulation system based on a new concept, a directoractor model. It also models a distributed simulation as a collection of actor objects running concurrently at different nodes. DOWS is implemented using Java objects which interact with each other through Java RMI. Each director object is implemented as web client which downloads and executes the proper applet from a HTTP server, and hence DOWS provides a web-enabled simulation environment which allows users to easily instantiate the simulation model using the HTTP server. The whole simulation can be speed up by decomposing the simulation model into several submodels and mapping them onto the actors. DOWS also provides an efficient virtual real time simulation environment which integrates the coordination among actors by supporting time synchronization, simulation message transfer, and network fault detection. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

object-oriented/sup 1/ languages support many modern programming paradigms such as information hiding, inheritance, polymorphism, and dynamic binding. As a result, software systems implemented in OO languages are more reusable and reliable than those in non-OO. Many legacy software systems were created before OO programming became popular and needed to be redesigned and updated to OO programs. The process of abstracting OO designs from the procedural source code was often done manually or with limited assistance from program structural diagrams. Most reengineering focuses on the functionality of the original program, and the OO redesign often results in a completely new design based on the designers' understanding of the original program. Such an approach is not sufficient, for it not only takes time and effort for designers to become familiar with the original program, but the approach itself is also mistake-prone due to the human involvement. This paper presents a computer-aided semi-automatic method that abstracts OO designs from the original procedural source code. More specifically, it is a method for OO redesign based on program structural diagrams, visualization, and execution slice. We conducted a case study by applying this method to an inventory management software system. Results indicate that our method can effectively and efficiently abstract an appropriate OO design out of the original C code as well as re-generate part of the system in C++ code based on this new OO design.

We propose a comprehensive model of an API-set (application program interface) that allows developers to envision and realize a variety of distributed real-time multimedia applications as networks of easily understood and analyzable high-level real-time distributed computing objects, called time-triggered message-triggered objects (TMOs). This model reflects our view that any multimedia application can be represented by a set of properly networked TMOs. The software architecture and structuring model basically consists of four building blocks, which are the single stream TMO, the compound stream TMO, the conductor TMO, and the stream connection. The definitions and roles of these building blocks are discussed and illustrated by applying them in structuring a multi-party audio-video teleconferencing service system.

Service oriented programming - which combines distributed object computing, component-based and Web-based concepts - has recently emerged as a promising approach to develop dynamic and heterogeneous service provision environments. Such systems are referenced in literature as service oriented architectures. Classic strategies to address dependability in distributed object computing middleware may not be straightforwardly applied to service oriented architectures (SOAs) for pervasive computing, since they operate in quite different contexts compared to traditional DOC middleware. In this paper, our focus is on dependability issues of SOAs. In particular, we identify dependability requirements of such systems during their life cycle showing how these requirements may change depending on the time phase (discovery, lookup, setup, delivery). We also explore the suitability of Jini technology as an enabling infrastructure to improve availability and reliability, describing both the benefits and drawbacks of a Jini-based solution in the context of a case study application, namely PRINCEPS.

Most of today's distributed computing systems in the field do not support the migration of execution entities among computing nodes during runtime. The relatively static association between units of processing and computing nodes makes it difficult to implement fault-tolerant behavior or load-balancing schemes. The concept of code migration may provide a solution to the problems mentioned above. It can be defined as the movement of process, object or component instances from one computing node to another during system runtime in a distributed environment. Within our paper we describe the integration of a migration facility with the help of aspect-oriented programming (AOP) into the .NET framework. AOP is interesting as it addresses nonfunctional system properties on the middleware level, without the need to manipulate lower system layers like the operating system itself. We have implemented two proof-of-concept applications, namely a migrating Web server as well as a migrating file version checker application. The paper contains an experimental evaluation of the performance impact of object migration in context of those two applications.

Techniques for systematic derivation of tight service time bounds of subsystems of distributed real-time embedded computing systems, are a key for enabling practical and highly meaningful certification of timeliness of systems, which is the most challenging part of the reliability certification process. An approach which uses a hybrid of measurement-based statistical derivation approaches and worst-case analysis approaches in deriving tight service time bounds, is proposed. The use of this hybrid approach together with a divide-and-conquer strategy in deriving the service time bounds of complex systems, is also proposed. Major research issues that need to be resolved before the hybrid approach can be practiced are mentioned.

We examine how computer system problems can be derived from real application problems, with a particular focus on the relevance of some assumptions, especially those related to computational models. Then, we compare these models, ranging from pure synchronous to pure asynchronous semantics, to conclude that synchrony does not necessarily dominate asynchrony whenever one is concerned with real operational systems. The issue as to whether asynchronous solutions can be considered for designing and building real-time distributed dependable systems is addressed. A priori, time free solutions are antagonistic with proving timeliness properties. We show how to circumvent this apparent contradiction via the late binding principle. This principles as well as drawbacks of synchronous solutions are illustrated.

A new class of applications can now be envisaged with the emergence of both mobile ad hoc computing and ubiquitous computing. Applications of such kind are characterised by being largely distributed and proactive, i.e. able to operate without human intervention. The anonymous and asynchronous paradigm, which is advocated by event models, has shown to be well-suited for this kind of applications. However, current real-time event-oriented middleware technologies do not provide a complete solution for the requirements of mobile ad hoc environments. In this paper, we present the research carried out on both a resource and a QoS management framework to achieve real-time support for an event system operating in mobile ad hoc environments. The framework makes use of both reflection and component technology. The implementation of our resource system is developed in OpenCOM, which is a lightweight, efficient and reflective model based on Microsoft’s COM.
