An advanced high-level approach for programming of real-time distributed computing applications, the TMO (time-triggered message-triggered object) programming and specification scheme, has been enabled without creating any new language or compiler. Instead, a middleware system named the TMO Support Middleware (TMOSM) and an API that wraps around the execution support services of TMOSM have been established. An approach enabling further reduction of the labor in TMO programming is to let the programmer use a GUI to build structural frames of application TMO networks. The supporting tool called the Visual Studio for TMO (ViSTMO) consists of a GUI part for interactive design of TMO-network structures and a part for automated generation of C++ TMO code-frameworks. The TMO scheme contains mechanisms enabling efficient design of autonomy-rich structures of application systems and ViSTMO provides GUIs for programming the use of those mechanisms among others. The recent expansion and refinement of the functionality of and the implementation techniques used in ViSTMO are discussed in this paper.

The goal of ‘I-centric Services based on Super distributed objects’ is to provide a seamless computing environment on the basis of users’ individual communication spaces. It controls and manages large numbers of autonomous and decentralized objects (Super distributed objects), in individual living or working spaces providing services that can adapt to users’ individual requirements (I-centric Services). This paper introduces the I-centric Communications approach and identifies the requirements and design of Super distributed objects as the paradigm for future pervasive and autonomous systems. Results of this project have been adopted by the World Wireless Research Forum (WWRF) and object Management Group (OMG)

The complexity of building and validating software is a growing challenge for developers of distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) applications. While DRE applications are increasingly based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software elements, substantial time and effort are spent integrating these elements into applications. Integration challenges stem largely from a lack of higher level abstractions for composing complex applications. As a result, considerable application-specific "glue code" must be rewritten for each successive DRE application. This paper makes three contributions to the study of composing reusable middleware from standard components in DRE applications: it (1) describes the limitations of current approaches in middleware composition, (2) discusses the minimum set of requirements required of reusable middleware components, and (3) presents recurring patterns for software composition as applied to CIAO (Component-Integrated ACE ORB), our open-source component model implementation.

The PPTR (primary passive TMO replication) scheme is a passive real-time object replication scheme, which is based on the TMO (time-triggered message-triggered object) real-time object model. Compared to the active object replication schemes, the passive object replication schemes typically require fewer processor resources, but have longer fault recovery times. This paper describes a relatively simple and somewhat restrictive but still quite broadly applicable version of the PPTR scheme and its implementation into a real-time middleware architecture, ROAFTS. The PPTR scheme is compared against another existing active real-time object replication scheme supported by the ROAFTS middleware architecture.

Publish/subscribe is a widespread communication paradigm for asynchronous messaging that naturally fits the decoupled nature of distributed systems, allowing simple and effective development of distributed applications. In this paper we propose a framework, which includes a model of a publish/subscribe computation and a few properties on the computation, namely completeness and minimality, which capture, from an application viewpoint, the expected behavior of a publish/subscribe system with respect to the semantic of the notification of the information. Finally, we provide also a centralized implementation of publish/subscribe system which produces minimal and complete computations.

In the last two decades the development of Total Order (TO) broadcast and multicast communication over asynchronous distributed systems have been one of the main research issues in dependable distributed computing. As a result, a huge amount of works has been carried out, ranging from service *** to a variety of TO implementations over different communication platforms. Differences among such *** can make very difficult the choice of the right TO primitive, by an application designer, to enable the application to meet its correctness requirements. The aim of this paper is thus to present a clear classification of total order broadcast specifications. In particular, six specifications of total order broadcast primitives proposed in the literature are organized into a hierarchy that allows (i) to classify existing implementations of total order communication primitives, and (ii) to select the right primitive according to the application requirements in order to maximize performance.

This paper presents a complete system model for scheduling and dispatching CORBA service requests that have hard as well as soft real-time timing requirements in a distributed environment. The model provides the methodology for expressing and enforcing time-based QoS constraints for real-time CORBA service requests. Therefore, the presented model complements the state of the art in real-time scheduling in CORBA-based systems. The model is based on using the distributed time-based parametric scheduling method. This method is used to verify the feasibility of a distributed periodic hard real-time task set and to generate dispatching calendars that dynamically adapt to run-time environment.

The high level architecture (HLA) is widely used in defense applications as a common framework for modeling and simulation. The federation development and execution process (FEDEP) is a generalized process to build HLA federations from scratch. However, simulation model design, implementation, testing and execution defined in the FEDEP are time consuming and expensive. The model construction environment (MCE) is introduced in this paper as a Web-based system to enhance the efficiency of the federation development by reusing the existing simulation object models (SOM) to build new federation object models (FOM). To ensure the compatibility of the SOMs in a FOM, a matching algorithm is defined and tested. An extensible elements scheme is designed to help shape the characteristics of the FOM/SOMs. This study can contribute to more cost-efficient methodologies for the development and execution of simulation models.

Assigning an application’s fault-tolerance properties (e.g., replication style, checkpointing frequency) statically, and in an arbitrary manner, can lead to the application not achieving its target resilience and performance. The resource management infrastructure that we have developed transparently determines a CORBA application’s resource usage and its rate/pattern of invocation across a distributed system. Using this information, our infrastructure makes more informed decisions about the application’s fault-tolerance properties, and dynamically adapts these decisions, as faults occur, and as resources are added and removed from the system. We have designed our prototype to be decentralized so that it is scalable and does not itself constitute a single point of failure.
