Weapons System Open Architecture (WSOA) utilizes a distributed object computing foundation as a "bridge" to enable communication between disparate real-time systems in the redirection of strike assets. This open systems "bridge" connects legacy embedded mission systems and off-board C3I (command, control, communication and information) sources and systems. WSOA will establish the potential gains in warfighting capability due to the enabling technologies of collaborative planning, information mining, and adaptive embedded resource management. This paper focuses on the experiences and lessons learned in the WSOA demonstration program with CORBA middleware, pluggable protocols and Quality of Service (QoS) enforcement, management and verification.

This paper presents a simple protocol that provides application processes with an approximate real-time notion. This time notion is very versatile. At one extreme, it behaves at least as virtual time (being thereby consistent with causality). At the other extreme, it behaves as real-time. More precisely, with respect to approximate real-time all scheduled events are always executed at their scheduled time. If local computations took no time, approximate real-time would always be real-time. The system facilitates the rescheduling of events to bring real-time and approximate time closer together if local computations take too much time. A time-slotted leader election protocol using the proposed approximate time notion is described.

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) has received increasing attention from designers of real-time systems. Several approaches apply and enrich the UML notation for modeling of real-time applications. In addition to that, UML modelers can make use of the object Constraint Language (OCL) to restrict their models by additional constraints. Currently, OCL and real-time extensions of the UML only provide limited means to express temporal constraints. In particular, OCL lacks sufficient means to specify constraints over the dynamic behavior of a UML model, i.e., the evolution of states and state transitions as well as time-bounded constraints. However it is essential to be able to specify such constraints for real-time systems to guarantee correct system behavior We argue for a consistent extension of OCL that enables modelers to express state-related time-bounded constraints.

The real-time CORBA and minimum CORBA specifications are important steps towards defining standard-based middleware which can satisfy real-time requirements in an embedded system. This real-time middleware must be based on a real-time operating system (RTOS) and a real-time network. This article presents a new time-triggered Ethernet protocol that has been implemented under RTLinux. Furthermore it describes a real-time CORBA implementation called ROFES, which is based on this new real-time network.

Two recent standards have a great potential to impulse the use of object orientation in the development of real-time applications. The first is the real-time Specification for Java (RT-Java), consisting in an application programming interface (API) for real-time object-oriented programming. The other is the emerging RT-UML standard, which addresses the specification of real-time requirements and time using extended UML diagrams. This work proposes an approach for bridging the gap between the two emerging standards, aiming to provide a clear link between the modeled real-time constraints and the programming entities that provide their implementation. The main idea is to enhance the traceability as well as readability of timing constraints from a model-based requirements model to implementation. Relationships between the stereotypes and tags used to decorate the UML diagrams and their code representation are explained. An assessment of the benefits achieved using both standards as well are as some proposed enhancements are also discussed.

distributed object computing middleware such as CORBA, RMI, and DCOM have gained wide acceptance and has shielded programmers from many tedious and error-prone aspects of distributed programming. In particular, CORBA event service has been used extensively in embedded systems. We propose an aspect oriented approach to develop synchronization code for distributed systems that use event service as the underlying communication middleware. Our approach is to factor out synchronization as a separate aspect, synthesize synchronization code and then compose it with the functional code. We use high-level "global invariants" to specify the synchronization policies which are then automatically translated into synchronization code for the underlying event service. To implement synchronization efficiently using the event service, we propose enhancements to the semantics of the event service. Specifically, we define the notion of condition events and exactly k semantics. Given these enhancements, we describe a synthesis procedure to translate global invariants into synchronization code based on events. We describe the implementation of the enhancements on the Tao's real-time Event Service. We present experimental results to demonstrate that the enhanced event service leads to more efficient implementation of synchronization. We feel that our methodology and the enhanced real-time Event Service will lead to more confident use of sophisticated synchronization policies in distributed object oriented systems.

ARTISST (ARTISST is a real-time System Simulation Tool) is a modular event-driven simulation framework for real-time systems. It is targeted towards the performance evaluation of complex dynamic real-time systems made of tasks performing arbitrary computations and exhibiting a complex and realistic pattern for their arrival law, synchronization relations, and execution time. The simulator actually focuses on a time-accurate simulation, since it allows, among other things, to take the operating system (including its scheduler) costs into account. Furthermore, thanks to its modular and object-oriented software architecture, the simulator is not dedicated to a particular operating system API, but is fully customizable instead. This paper describes ARTISST, and illustrates its functionalities and customization facilities on two example real-time systems.

Component-based infrastructures provide support for the development and execution of component-based systems. However they have limitations in their application in real-time and reliable systems, because they do not integrate facilities to support these types of problems and include limitations of predictability and dependability. These infrastructures are designed to provide support to financial and e-commerce applications; they integrate as basic services the transaction, persistence, security and events. These are useful services in real-time and telecom applications, but these applications require other types of services to provide predictability and reliability. We introduce some practical solutions to integrate QoS (Quality of Service) services in the component infrastructures and the results that their business components can expect.

object-oriented, concurrent, and event-based programming models provide a natural framework in which to express the behavior of distributed and embedded software systems. However, contemporary programming languages still base their I/O primitives on a model in which the environment is assumed to be centrally controlled and synchronous, and interactions with the environment carried out through blocking subroutine calls. The gap between this view and the natural asynchrony of the real world has made event-based programming a complex and error-prone activity, despite recent focus on event-based frameworks and middleware. In thin paper we present a consistent model of event-based concurrency, centered around the notion of reactive objects. This model relieves the object-oriented paradigm from the idea of transparent blocking, and naturally enforces reactivity and state consistency We illustrate our point by a program example that offers substantial improvements in size and simplicity over a corresponding Java-based solution.
