The problem of weighted hypergraph embedding in a cycle (WHEC) is to embed the weighted hyperedges of a hypergraph as the paths in a cycle, such that the maximum congestion of any physical link in the cycle is minimized. A simpler version of this problem is the weighted graph embedding in a cycle (WGEC) that embeds the weighted edges of a normal graph as the paths in a cycle. The WHEC and WGEC problems have applications in design automation, parallel computing and computer communication. In this paper we first show that both WHEC and WGEC problems are NP-Complete. Afterwards we formulate the WHEC problem as an integer linear programming (ILP). Therefore, an approximation solution can be obtained by using LP-relaxation and rounding heuristic. Our LP-approximation algorithm generates an embedding with congestion at most two times the optimal solution. Finally, to guarantee the efficiency, we develop a linear-time approximation algorithm that also provides a solution with the same worst case approximation bound as the LP-approximation.

Dynamic programming is an important combinatorial optimization technique that has been widely used in various fields such as control theory, operations research, computational biology and computer science. Many authors have described parallel dynamic programming algorithms for the family of multistage problems. More scarce is the literature for the more general class of problems where dependences appear between non-consecutive stages. Among the important problems falling in this class is the RNA base pairing problem. In this study we propose a new parallel scheme for a large class of recurrences with triangular iteration space and nonuniform dependences that includes the RNA base pairing problem. We derive two different instances of this scheme that correspond to an horizontal and a vertical traverse of the iteration domain. We develop and extend the tiling approach for this particular class. We formulate and analytically solve the optimization problem determining the tile size that minimizes the total execution time of the tiled program on a distributed memory parallel machine. Our analyze is based on the BSP model, which assures the portability of the obtained results. The computational experiments carried out on the CRAY T3E behave according to the predictions of our theoretical model.

The efficient mapping of parallel tasks is essential in order to exploit the gain from parallelisation. In this work, we focus on modelling and mapping message-passing applications that are defined by the programmer with an arbitrary interaction pattern among tasks. A new model is proposed, known as TTIG (Temporal Task Interaction Graph), which captures not only computation and communication costs, but also the percentages of concurrency between tasks. From this model, a mapping strategy is developed that minimises expected execution time by properly exploiting task parallelism. The effectiveness of this approach has been proven for a real image-processing application on a cluster of PCs.

As the Internet began its exponential growth into a global information environment, software was often unreliable, slow and had difficulty in interoperating with other systems. Supercomputing node counts also continue to follow high growth trends. Supercomputer and grid resource management software must mature into a reliable computational platform in much the same way that web services matured for the Internet. DOGMA The Next Generation (DOGMA-NG) improves on current resource management approaches by using tested off-the-shelf enterprise technologies to build a robust, scalable, and extensible resource management platform. Distributed web service technologies constitute the core of DOGMA-NG's design and provide fault tolerance and scalability. DOGMA-NG's use of open standard web technologies and efficient management algorithms promises to reduce management time and accommodate the growing size of future supercomputers. The use of web technologies also provides the opportunity for anew parallel programming paradigm, enterprise web services parallel programming, that also gains benefit from the scalable, robust component architecture.

This paper presents a methodology for aiding a scientific programmer to evaluate the performance of parallel programs on advanced architectures. It applies well-defined design of experiments methods to the identification of relations among different levels in the process of mapping computational operations to high-performance computing systems. Statistical analysis is used for studying different factors that affect the mapping process of scientific computing algorithms to advanced architectures. In particular a case study on the numerical solution of finite element methods for the analysis of conformal antennas for electromagnetic radiation applications was used to test the proposed methodology. The use of statistics for identification of relationships among factors has formalized the solution of the problem and this novel approach allows unbiased conclusions about results. Subset selection based on principal components was used to determine the subset of metrics required to explain the behavior of the system.

We present a system-level design and programming method for embedded multiprocessor systems. The aim of the method is to improve the design time and design quality by providing a structured approach for implementing process networks. We use process networks as re-usable and architecture-independent functional specifications. The method facilitates the cost-driven and constraint-driven source code transformation of process networks into architecture-specific implementations in the form of communicating tasks. We apply the method to implement a JPEG decoding process network in software on a set of MIPS processors. We apply three transformations to optimize synchronization rates and data transfers and to exploit data parallelism for this target architecture. We evaluate the impact of the source code transformations and the performance of the resulting implementations in terms of design time, execution time, and code size. The results show that process networks can be implemented quickly and efficiently on embedded multiprocessor systems.

This paper introduces the new version of the Madeleine portable multi-protocol communication library. Madeleine version III now includes full, flexible multi-cluster support associated to a redesigned version of the transparent multi-network message forwarding mechanism. Madeleine III works together with a new configuration management module to handle a wide panel of network-heterogeneous multi-cluster configurations. The integration of a new topology information system allows programmers of parallel computing applications to build highly optimized distributed algorithms on top of the transparent multi-network communication system provided by Madeleine III's virtual networks. The preliminary experiments we conducted regarding the new virtual network capabilities of Madeleine III showed interesting results with an asymptotic bandwidth of 43 MB/s over a virtual link made of a SISCI/SCI and a BIP/Myrinet physical link.

This paper considers work in the context of the CRUX project, which aims at the conception of a complete environment for parallel programming, in the development of a postgraduate course in Computer Science of Santa Catarina Federal University. This paper discusses a performance evaluation of several scheduling algorithms of real time systems found in the bibliography, about a simulation model that represents the processing as the communication of this multicomputer. The objective was to quantify the effect of the scheduling algorithm and other factors about some metrics of selected performance, in order to verify the applicability of CRUX in real time systems.

Many computations can be modeled with systems of affine recurrence equations (SAREs) over polyhedral domains. We study the problem of scheduling individual computations of an SARE in the presence of reductions i.e., operations specifying the accumulation of a set of values to produce a single value. Reductions involve a commutative and associative operator and therefore, per se, do not impose any specific order. However, on realistic machines, operators have bounded fan-in and therefore an order of accumulation (serialization) is needed. Arbitrary serializations may adversely affect the running time of a program. We develop an algorithm to determine efficient serializations of all reductions. We illustrate our methods with two significant examples.

In this paper, a fast block motion estimation algorithm that not only accelerates the process of the motion estimation but also maintains the same accuracy as that of the full search algorithm is proposed. In modern CPUs, the single instruction multiple data (SIMD) technique is commonly used to provide an execution speedup of up to eight fold. The proposed algorithm satisfies the requirements of (i) the easy computation of the lower bounds of the block matching error, and (ii) their storage in a contiguous memory space for its SIMD implementation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is more than 40 times faster than the full search algorithm while keeping the accuracy of the latter.
