The purpose of the paper is to describe a new semi-automated design space exploration method based on genetic programming. A new control/dataflow specification method is proposed as well as appropriate models for hardware parts and algorithms. With this method we are able to test many different hardware architectures and algorithms against cost, speed, computation time and other constraints within a very short time. The remaining manual work is to exploit the model parameters of the components of the architecture and the algorithm. In contrast to other approaches our method is suited for embedded and distributed systems. The method, models and application are explained in detail by means of a comprehensive case study.

Vector prefix and reduction are collective communication primitives in which all processors must cooperate. The authors present two parallel algorithms, the direct algorithm and the split algorithm, for vector prefix and reduction computation on coarse-grained, distributed-memory parallel machines. The algorithms are relatively architecture independent and can be used effectively in many applications such as pack/unpack, array prefix/reduction functions, and array combining scatter functions, which are defined in Fortran 90 and in High Performance Fortran. Experimental results on the CM-5 are presented.

Several methods have been proposed in the literature for the local enumeration of dense references for arrays distributed by the CYCLIC(k) data-distribution in High Performance Fortran. These methods deal only with loops without any irregular references. However existing techniques are not enough when the code includes sparse references. In this work, some methods for enumeration of references are proposed and tested for some linear sparse algebra algorithms. We use the BRS(k) distribution for sparse matrices, which is a generalization of the dense CYCLIC(k) distribution. Efficiency evaluation for the proposed methods has been performed on different processors.

The article explores the applicability of fully automatic parallelizing techniques for parallel computers. We capitalize on a variety of traditional compiling techniques as well as new techniques developed specifically for distributed memory architectures. Combining these traditional and new techniques, we conducted experiments with several benchmark programs on the Cray T3D.

In this paper, we describe our experience with developing Airshed, a large pollution modeling application, in the Fx programming environment. We demonstrate that high level parallel programming languages like Fx and High Performance Fortran offer a simple and attractive model for developing portable and efficient parallel applications. Performance results are presented for the Airshed application executing on Intel Paragon and Cray T3D and T3E parallel computers. The results demonstrate that the application is "performance portable", i.e., it achieves good and consistent performance across different architectures, and that the performance can be explained and predicted using a simple model for the communication and computation phases in the program. We also show how task parallelism was used to alleviate I/O related bottlenecks, an important consideration in many applications. Finally, we demonstrate how external parallel modules developed using different parallelization methods can be integrated in a relatively simple and flexible way with modules developed in the Fx compiler framework. Overall, our experience demonstrates that an HPF-based environment is highly suitable for developing complex applications, including multidisciplinary applications.

The total exchange is one of the most dense communication patterns and is at the heart of numerous applications and programming models in parallel computing. We present a simple randomized algorithm to efficiently schedule the total exchange on the family of k-ary n-cubes with adaptive routing and wormhole switching. This algorithm is based on an important property of the wormhole networks that reach high throughput under uniform traffic. The experimental results, conducted on a 256-node bidimensional cube using an adaptive routing algorithm based on J. Duato's (1993) methodology, show that the proposed exchange algorithm reaches a very high throughput with small and medium sized packers, around 85% of the optimal bound, and is more efficient than other algorithms presented in the literature.

Sofware distributed-shared-memory (DSM) systems provide a desirable target for parallelizing compilers due to their flexibility. However, studies show synchronization and load imbalance are significant sources of overhead. The authors investigate the impact of compilation techniques for eliminating synchronization overhead in software DSMs, developing new algorithms to handle situations found in practice. They evaluate the contributions of synchronization elimination algorithms based on 1) dependence analysis, 2) communication analysis, 3) exploiting coherence protocols in software DSMs, and 4) aggressive expansion of parallel SPMD regions. They also found suppressing expensive parallelism to be useful for one application. Experiments indicate these techniques eliminate almost all parallel task invocations, and reduce the number of barriers executed by 66% on average. On a 16 processor IBM SP-2, speedups are improved on average by 35%, and are tripled for some applications.

Media applications are characterized by large amounts of available parallelism, little data reuse, and a high computation to memory access ratio. While these characteristics are poorly matched to conventional microprocessor architectures, they are a good fit for modern VLSI technology with its high arithmetic capacity but limited global bandwidth. The stream programming model, in which an application is coded as streams of data records passing through computation kernels, exposes both parallelism and locality in media applications that can be exploited by VLSI architectures. The Imagine architecture supports the stream programming model by providing a bandwidth hierarchy tailored to the demands of media applications. Compared to a conventional scalar processor. Imagine reduces the global register and memory bandwidth required by typical applications by factors of 13 and 21 respectively. This bandwidth efficiency enables a single chip Imagine processor to achieve a peak performance of 16.2GFLOPS (single-precision floating point) and sustained performance of up to 8.5GFLOPS on media processing kernels.

An environment for generating FPGA architectures for image algebra-based algorithms

FPGA technology offers the potential for low cost, high performance for certain applications, including image processing. However, the programming model which FPGAs typically present to application developers is prohibitively low level. This paper presents a software environment and architecture description approach which enable the dynamic generation of FPGA architectures for high level image processing operations based on image algebra. Scaleable, parameterised architectures can be described using a small set of Prolog constructors which specify an architecture as a parameterised composition of base level building blocks. The environment includes a rule-based generator which produces EDIF netlist files for each high level operation, targeted to Xilinx XC6200 series FPGAs.

Passing messages through shared memory plays an important role in symmetric multiprocessors and on Clumps. The management of concurrent access to message queues is an important aspect of design for shared memory message passing systems. Using both microbenchmarks and applications, the paper compares the performance of concurrent access algorithms for passing active messages on a Sun Enterprise 5000 server. The paper presents a new lock free algorithm that provides many of the advantages of non blocking algorithms while avoiding the overhead of true non blocking behavior. The lock free algorithm couples synchronization tightly to the data structure and demonstrates application performance superior to all others studied. The success of this algorithm implies that other practical problems might also benefit from a reexamination of the non blocking literature.
