Careful page mapping has been shown in the past to be effective for reducing cache conflicts on both uniprocessor and Uniform Memory Access (UMA) multiprocessors. This paper extends previous page-mapping schemes to the more recent Cache-Coherent Non-Uniform Memory Access (CC-NUMA) multiprocessors. These extensions maintain the program's data-task affinity, which is important to CC-NUMA, while reducing cache set conflicts by carefully selecting the page frames. Using an execution-driven simulator that simulates a CC-NUMA machine with a 4-MB secondary cache and a 16-KB primary cache on each of the 4-issue super-scalar processors, we find that, when non-coherence cache misses are relatively heavy, it is quite important for page mapping to preserve the compiler-generated memory module ID (MID) which determines data distribution among the processors. We also find that straight application of page-coloring performs worse than bin-hopping by 10-45%, while by hashing the page color with part of the MID, page-coloring can perform closely to bin-hopping.

Overset grids are used in conjunction with a finite volume time domain (FVTD) Maxwell equations solver to conduct electromagnetic scattering simulations on distributed memory massively parallel computing platforms. Simulation results are presented for two spheres in close proximity as well as a finned missile-like configuration. In addition, parallel performance data is presented for program runs on three modern parallel architectures. Results show the overset grid algorithm to be highly scalable and capable of producing results of comparable accuracy to single-grid solutions while greatly simplifying the often complex grid-generation process.

Advances in network technology and the higher levels of circuit integration due to VLSI have led to widespread interest in the use of multiprocessor systems in solving many practical problems. As the hardware continues to diminish in size and cost, new possibilities are being created for systems that are heterogeneous by design. parallel multiprocessor architectures are now feasible and provide a valid solution to the throughput rates demands of the increasing sophistication of control and/or instrumentation systems. Increasing the number of processors and the complexity of the problems to be solved makes programming multiprocessor systems more difficult and error-prone. This paper describes some parts already implemented (mainly the scheduler) of a software development tool for a heterogeneous multiprocessor system that will automatically perform code generation, execution time estimation, scheduling, and handles the communication primitive insertion.

Due to advancements in semiconductor processing technology, unprecedented levels of system integration are now possible in digital signal processing systems. MIMD/multicomputer architectures used for parallel digital signal processing applications are not always efficient, and are difficult to program. Very long instruction word processors are uniquely suited to digital signal processing applications, able to exploit opportunities for fine and coarse grained parallelism efficiently without the overhead of MIMD/multicomputer approaches. A flexible, high level language programming environment has been developed in support of this processor paradigm.

programming languages like Fortran or C define exactly the layout of array elements in memory. Programmers often use that definition to access the same memory via variables of different types. For many real programs this practice makes changing the layout of an array impossible without violating the semantics of the program since the same memory block may be accessed via variables of different types-such accesses may now receive wrong array elements. On the other hand, changing array layout is often necessary to obtain good parallel performance or even to improve sequential performance by providing better cache locality. The paper demonstrates that the problem of changing array layouts in the presence of multiple variables of different types accessing the same memory can be solved with the algorithms for 1) detecting overlapping arrays, 2) using procedure cloning to reduce overlapping, 3) array-type coercion, and 4) code structure recovery.

An approach for designing a hybrid parallel system that can perform adaptively for different types of parallelism is presented. An adaptive parallel system (APS) is proposed to attain this goal. The APS is constructed by integrating tightly two different types of parallel architectures, i.e., a multiprocessor system and a memory based processor array (MPA), into a single machine. The multiprocessor and the MPA can execute medium to coarse grain parallelism and fine grain data parallelism optimally. One important feature in the APS is that the programming interface is the same as the usual subroutine call mechanism to execute data parallel code on the MPA. Thus the existence of the MPA is transparent to the programmers. This research concerns the design of an underlying base architecture that can be optimally executed for a broad range of applications, from coarse grain to fine grain parallelism. Also the performance model is provided for fair comparison with other approaches. It turns out that the proposed APS can provide significant performance improvement and cost effectiveness for highly parallel applications having a mixed set of parallelisms.

The US high performance computing community still uses the term "Grand Challenge" for a variety of difficult problems in computational science. Though it was primarily a means of communicating computing goals to nonpractitioners, it also serves the useful purpose of letting practitioners focus on defining goals more carefully. For purposes of Grand Challenge computing, it is essential to have precise goals, and a way of measuring progress toward those goals. Many Grand Challenges have neither. A particularly common error is to measure the size of a computing problem with some integer "N" that represents the number of grid points or the number of particles or some other count of a discrete quantity. Another common error is to use measures of hardware activity, such as floating point operations per second, as a valid goal for an application programmer. The paper presents an approach to measuring the progress of physical simulations that shows promise for putting computational efforts on firmer scientific ground.

Program libraries are one way to make the cooperation between specialists from various fields successful: the separation of application-specific knowledge from application independent tasks ensures portability, maintenance, extensibility, and flexibility. This paper demonstrates the success in combining problem-specific knowledge for the quadratic assignment problem (QAP) with the raw computing power offered by contemporary parallel hardware by using the library of parallel search algorithms ZRAM. The solutions of 10 previously unsolved large standard test-instances of the QAP are presented.

Tools for parallel systems today range from specification over debugging to performance analysis and more. Typically, they help the programmers of parallel algorithms from the early development stages to a certain level of program optimization. However in HPC (High Performance Computing) today the end-user of massively parallel CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)-programs has little or no support in his work. The scientific engineer who often runs his application on a parallel computer somewhere in the WAN (Wide Area Network) and visualizes the enormous amounts of simulation data on a graphical workstation in his LAN (Local Area Network) has needs which are by far not covered by state of the art visualization systems. The tool proposed here follows a strategy which differs completely from existing, batch-oriented and strictly sequential methods of the working process in the application cycle of parallel HPC applications. It allows both on-line visualization and interactive program steering of massively parallel CFD-applications. The parameters of the mathematical model and the numerical methods build objects of a database which can be accessed by an object-oriented graphical user interface via visualization and modification operators. Experiences with this new tool concept VIPER (VIsualization of parallel numerical simulation algorithms for Extended Research) applied on a real-world and industrial scientific application will be shown.

Many parallel architectures support a memory model where some memory accesses are local, and thus inexpensive, while other memory accesses are remote, and potentially quite expensive. In order to achieve good parallel performance, it is often necessary to reduce the number of remote memory accesses. This can be done by the programmer, the compiler, or a combination of both. The overall goal is to minimize the work required by the programmer, and have the compiler automate the process as much as possible. The paper reports on compiler techniques for decreasing the number of remote memory accesses using locality analysis for a parallel dialect of C called EARTH-C. The locality analysis uses an algorithm inspired by type inference algorithms for fast points-to analysis. The algorithm estimates when an indirect reference via a pointer can be safely assumed to be a local access. The locality inference algorithm is also used to guide the automatic specialization of functions in order to take advantage of locality scientific to particular calling contexts. The locality analysis and automatic specialization has been implemented in the EARTH-C compiler which produces low level threaded code for the EARTH-C multithreaded architecture. Experimental results are presented for a set of benchmarks that operate on irregular, dynamically allocated data structures. The techniques give moderate to significant speedups and they do lessen the burden on the programmer.
