A complete implementation of MPI for the Fujitsu AP1000+ is presented. The library can employ a number of different mechanisms in implementing the send and receive message passing operations. The method of detecting the arrival of new messages can be realized through interrupt-driven and polling techniques. Transferring message data is achieved by either sending the message data directly to the receiver "in-place", or using a rendezvous method which allows the use of a fast noncopying nonblocking remote-fetching operation. The MPI library exhibits good performance compared to the native message passing library, and allows the user to decide at runtime which mechanisms will be used in order to achieve the best performance on a per-application basis.

Shape theory is a new approach to data types and programming based on the separation of a data type into its "shape" and "data" parts. Shape is common in parallel computing. This paper identifies areas where the explicit use of shape reduces the burden of programming a parallel computer, using examples from an implementation of Cholesky decomposition.

In this paper, we present ConCoord: a software environment for Concurrent Coordinated programming. ConCoord contributes to concurrent programming in three ways. First, it separates programming into computation and coordination in order to reduce programming complexity. A ConCoord program is a dynamic collection of processes for either computation or coordination. Computation processes encapsulate conventional sequential computations. Coordination processes manage concurrency and only this. They handle dynamic evolution of the program structure depending on conditions on the program structure and execution state of processes. Second, ConCoord is targeted at networks of sequential and parallel machines. These networks support efficiently the exploitation of a diversity of concurrency grains on their different architectures. In order to take advantage of this feature, ConCoord provides linguistic support for heterogeneous concurrency exploitation. Third, reuse has being a primary concern in ConCoord's design. In our environment, sequentiM algorithms can be reused within computation processes. Concurrency management of concurrent algorithms can be reused within coordination processes. Both computation and coordination processes can be specified as parameterised reusable software components. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

PASM is a concept for a parallel processing system that allows experimentation with different architectural design alternatives. PASM is dynamically reconfigurable along three dimensions: partitionability into independent or communicating submachines, variable interprocessor connections, and mixed-mode SIMD/MIMD parallelism. With mixed-mode parallelism, a program can switch between SIMD (synchronous) and MIMD (asynchronous) parallelism at instruction-level granularity, allowing the use of both modes in a single machine. The PASM concept is presented, showing the ways in which reconfiguration can be accomplished. Trade-offs among SIMD/MIMD, and mixed-mode parallelism are explored. The small-scale PASM prototype with 16 processing elements is described. The ELP mixed-mode programming language used on the prototype is discussed. An example of a prototype-based study that demonstrates the potential of mixed-mode parallelism is given.

In this paper, we discuss scalability of parallel systems from three aspects and point out some of the weakness of several existing main schemes for scalability. As an extension to the isoefficiency metric and isospeed metric, we present and define scalability of parallel algorithm implementation, and analyze some relevant theoretical perspectives.

This paper describes the DOSMOS parallel programming environment. Based on a DSM layer, this system has been specially designed to ensure scalability and efficiency. Several novel features are introduced as the grouping of processes, the possibility of mixing message-passing (PVM) code and DSM code, the definition of optimized weak consistency protocols, the integration of monitoring facilities. First experiments on networks of workstations show the effectiveness of these features.

In this paper, we describe an object-based distributed shared memory called Adsmith. In an object-based DSM, the shared memory consists of many shared objects, through which the shared memory is accessed. Adsmith is built on top of PVM at the library layer using C++. PVM is used as the communication subsystem, because it is a de facto standard and encapsulates many system related details. Several mechanisms are used to improve the performance of Adsmith, such as release memory consistency, load/store-like memory accesses, nonblocking accesses, and atomic operations, etc. Performance results show that even though Adsmith is implemented on top of PVM, programs running on Adsmith can achieve a performance comparable with those running directly on PVM.

Most static scheduling algorithms that schedule parallel programs represented by directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) are sequential. parallelization of scheduling algorithms is a new research area. This paper discusses the essential issues of parallel static scheduling and presents an efficient parallel scheduling algorithm, the HPMCP algorithm. The proposed algorithm has been implemented on an Intel Paragon machine. It produces high-quality scheduling and is much faster than existing sequential and parallel algorithms.

Multicast is an important interprocessor communication pattern existing in various parallel application algorithms. This paper proposes a new multicast algorithm for hypercube computers that not only minimizes the number of hops required for delivery of the message and keeps a least possible amount of traffic, but also takes into consideration of balancing traffic among the active processors to maximize the parallelism in communication. Our algorithm has a time complexity of O(nN) for fault-tolerant multicasting in a hypercube of N=2/sup n/ processors containing an arbitrary number of faulty processors.
