We introduce Join Voyager - a language that can be used to program a Peer to Peer network using object oriented techniques and Join methods. In Join Voyager any object can migrate to any node (peer) of the underlying network. The language provides strong mobility, i.e. the ability to capture and transfer the full execution state of mobile objects at any time. Objects can communicate by sending and receiving messages in object oriented style. As in Join Java or Polyphonic C#, both synchronous and asynchronous messages are supported. The paper presents the design rationales and a semantic interpreter for Join Voyager. The interpreter is designed with continuations following the discipline of denotational semantics and is implemented in Haskell.

Cloud computing offers on-demand access to shared resources and services, hosted in warehouse sized data centers at cloud providers. Effective management of these shared resources and services is one of the key requirements for the delivery of cloud computing. However, there are several challenges to achieve effective cloud management. These include scale, multiple levels of abstraction, federation, sustainability, and dynamism. In this paper, we outline these challenges, and then describe specific examples of new management architectures that address these challenges. We focus on driving principles for the new designs, and give an illustration of its deployment on Open Cirrus - a research cloud test bed. Overall, the paper provides open issues and challenges in cloud management for the research community to address.

We present a general-purpose software framework, which allows different multi-disciplinary communities to take advantage of a distributed computational infrastructure. The ultimate goal is to provide organizations that need to exploit resources with CPU-intensive loose-parallel tasks with a software service capable to offer a user-friendly, standard and highly customizable access to the Grid. The software suite we developed has been designed specifically for organizations that cannot afford the adoption costs of more specialized and complex frameworks, developed in High Energy Physics (HEP) environment, but that still require an easy-to-use interface to the Grid. Our framework heavily relies on a bookkeeping database, storing both application-specific and infrastructure meta-data, which is tightly coupled with a web-based user-interface. The first makes available to the users information on the execution status of jobs and their specific meaning and parameters, and contributes in orchestrating the submission mechanism. The latter provides job submission management, bookkeeping database interactions, basic monitoring functionality and eLog system. Multi-site sub-missions based on user-defined requests and fine grain parametric submission interfaces are available. The structure of framework services follow a centralized design: job management service and bookkeeping database are hosted in a European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) site. Jobs executed into remote sites transfer their output to predefined target site repository and update the bookkeeping database. In addition, the framework requires a proper configuration of the remote Grid sites on which the jobs will run. Results from a large production of Monte Carlo simulated events submitted to 15 Grid sites are reported, and a comparison in terms of features, scopes, and targets, with a broad spectrum of general-purpose solutions in the same field of application is presented as well.

Multicore computing platforms have emerged as the most common computing platform to overcome challenges stemming from high power densities and thermal hot spots in conventional microprocessors. However, providing multiple cores does not directly translate into increased performance or better energy efficiency for most applications. The burden is placed on developers and tools to find and exploit parallelism and eventually utilize all of the available computing resources. Since multicore applications are more complex than single core applications, the software development tools play a crucial role to help programmers create high performance and correct software. In this paper we compare the most popular programming models OpenMP, GCD and Pthreads by applying these models to parallelize face detection and automatic speech recognition applications.

The frenetic development of the current architectures places a strain on the current state-of-the-art programming environments. Harnessing the full potential of such architectures has been a tremendous task for the whole scientific computing community. We present DAGuE a generic framework for architecture aware scheduling and management of micro-tasks on distributed many-core heterogeneous architectures. Applications we consider can be represented as a Direct Acyclic Graph of tasks with labeled edges designating data dependencies. DAGs are represented in a compact, problem-size independent format that can be queried on-demand to discover data dependencies, in a totally distributed fashion. DAGuE assigns computation threads to the cores, overlaps communications and computations and uses a dynamic, fully-distributed scheduler based on cache awareness, data-locality and task priority. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach, using several micro-benchmarks to analyze the performance of different components of the framework, and a Linear Algebra factorization as a use case.

This tutorial will provide an overview of the Global Arrays (GA) programming toolkit and describe its capabilities, performance, and the use of GA in high performance computing applications. The tutorial will review basic concepts in onesided communication and Global Address Space languages and will discuss basic setup and elementary communication using GA. More advanced topics, including global counters, non-blocking communication, and sparse data structures will also be discussed. If time permits, the tutorial will also present new/advanced capabilities and ongoing research activities.

The continuing launch of various multi-core processors popularizes parallel computing of gaining higher performance, however, it also exerts pressures on software developers concerning how to make full use of the multiplicity of resources to get the required benefits due to high coupling of parallel programs to specified hardware. In this paper, we propose SVP, a micro-threading based concurrency model, as an alternative to efficiently program on and manage multi-core, even many-core systems. SVP isolates programming from executing resources so that programs are compiled once and execute regardless of actual cores available, not only numbers, but also properties to achieve scalable speedup. Such lower coupling, better flexibility and portability in parallel applications are highly appreciated. To investigate SVP, tool chains and a fully functional software simulator of an SVP many-core chip have been developed for test and verification. Using this infra-structure, we are able to show how much we can gain from SVP and how speedup is scaled by running the same binary code of Game of Life on a scalable many-core platform.

The recent increased use of workflow management systems by large scientific collaborations presents the challenge of highly dynamic data placement in distributed systems. Such data placement may be constrained by the enforcement of data placement policies. We present a Policy based Data Placement Service that enforces data placement policies, interfaces with workflow managers and improves workflow efficiency by offloading data staging jobs from workflows.

This paper discusses the challenges in searching imposed by the burgeoning field of Internet of Things (IoT). It first overviews the evolution of the new field to its predecessors: searching in the mobile computing, ubiquitous computing and information retrieve. Then, it identifies four research thrusts: architecture design, search locality, real-time and scalability. It also sketches several presumptive IoT scenarios, and uses them to identify key capabilities missing in today's systems. This paper concludes with a discussion of the research necessary to design and develop these capabilities. In addition, this paper proposes a series of measurement dimensions, based on which it investigates the state-of-the-art efforts.
