Collaborative multi-drone, or more generally, multirobot systems - also called swarms - have many possible operational scenarios. They can be used in scenarios that are dangerous for humans or where deploying humans or stationary hardware would cost many resources. However, developing software for swarms is challenging. Common software development tools make it complex to define collaborative operations and distribute individual information correctly. We present a solution that allows an elegant and comprehensible definition of swarms and their constituents' behavior. We introduce an implementation of the Context-Role-oriented programming paradigm realized using the Julia programming language. Roles can then be used to assign tasks and specific behavior to certain swarm members. We evaluate the feasibility of our approach by implementing a surveillance task for a drone swarm. Using this application, we show how to define a swarm structure, how to implement role-specific behavior, and how roles can be used to distribute relevant information. We discuss centralized and decentralized swarms and provide a performance evaluation of CROP in Julia.

CONTEXT: Assistive Technology refers to a set of resources and services designed to help people with disabilities, providing or expanding their skills, enabling they to carry out activities with comfort and autonomy. PROBLEM: For visually impaired, the AT can guarantee access to ICTs, as resources such as screen and mouse may not be useful. In world, an estimated 285 million people are visually impaired, 39 million being blind. METHODOLOGY: This work describes a Systematic Literature Review, seeking to identify, analyze and interpret works related to AT developed to help visually impaired in the use of systems. INFORMATION systems THEORY: Was based on Theory of Interactive Media Effects, who argues that the characteristics of the media, as well as the source and content of the messages, affect the engagement and interaction of individuals involved in communication. SUMMARY OF RESULTS: 108 articles related to AT developed for visually impaired during an interaction with ICTs were obtained. Reading these works, select 12 articles related to learning computer programming and the use of software development tools by visually impaired. It was found that most of the TA resources developed focus only on the extension of the visual interface. CONTRIBUTIONS: The main limitations of the TA to access the resources available in systems for visually impaired, based on RSL, are considered. IMPACT ON SI AREA: Works related to the learning of concepts related to computer programming and software development tools for the visually impaired are analyzed, as well as the contributions, opportunities and challenges related to the development of AT to promote accessibility of these users in Information systems. © 2022 ACM.

Cycling is a low-impact exercise that is beneficial to the health of amputees, and also has the potential to improve rehabilitation outcomes. However, due to a lack of understanding how to design effective prostheses for recreational cycling, amputees often rely on regular walking models, which have unoptimized mechanical moving parts that lead to reductions in power and ineffective training. Hence, we aim to compose manufacturing guidelines for cycling prostheses by understanding the cycling movements of intact and amputee cyclists. For this study, specially made orthoses were employed to simulate the use of prostheses on healthy participants. Subjects cycled on an ergometer at two resistance and cadence levels, and at two different points of attachment of the prosthetic foot to the pedal: orthosis middle (OM) and orthosis tip (OT), while one condition encompassed regular cycling without the orthosis. The participants’ cycling techniques were compared by tracking markers attached to bony landmarks in the sagittal plane using cameras and OpenCV software. The effectiveness of the proposed attachment positions was evaluated by comparing the biomechanical data calculated for the different conditions. Preliminary results demonstrate that the OT position is more kinematically similar to regular cycling. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The so far dominant Von Neumann architecture is being challenged by the energy demanding communication bottle-neck between processing and memory units. To address this issue, in-memory computing is employed for their co-location, with memristive crossbar arrays playing an important role towards this goal. Motivated by the above, this work introduces a timing-based programming of a memristor crossbar array for sequence generation in Stochastic Computing (SC). Its operation principle is based on the stochastic nature of the memristor devices forming the crossbar array, where their programming is regulated by the switching probability that follows the Poisson distribution, controlled by pulse amplitude and duration. The timing-based programming of the proposed crossbar array increases the discretization levels of the output probability values, thereby offering more accurate control when compared to programming schemes that consider only the pulse amplitude. The memristor's stochasticity along with the crossbar's inherent parallelism opens the in-memory design space allowing SC elements to be used as sequences are generated efficiently. Simulation results on different programming pulse-width precisions highlight the proposed crossbar's effectiveness in sequence generation, supported by mean absolute error (MAE) results in a standard SC arithmetic operation. Process variations stemming from the crossbar array affecting the sequence generation in SC are investigated.

Quantum communication networks are emerging as a promising technology that could constitute a key building block in future communication networks in the 6G era and beyond. These networks have an inherent feature of parallelism that allows them to boost the capacity and enhance the security of communication systems. Recent advances led to the deployment of small- and large-scale quantum communication networks with real quantum hardware. In quantum networks, entanglement is a key resource that allows for data transmission between different nodes. However, to reap the benefits of entanglement and enable efficient quantum communication, the number of generated entangled pairs must be optimized. Indeed, if the entanglement generation rates are not optimized, then some of these valuable resources will be discarded and lost. In this paper, the problem of optimizing the entanglement generation rates and their distribution over a quantum memory is studied. In particular, a quantum network in which users have heterogeneous distances and applications is considered. This problem is posed as a mixed integer nonlinear programming optimization problem whose goal is to efficiently utilize the available quantum memory by distributing the quantum entangled pairs in a way that maximizes the user satisfaction. An interior point optimization method is used to solve the optimization problem and extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed system. Simulation results show the key design considerations for efficient quantum networks, and the effect of different network parameters on the network performance.

For a long time, most discrete accelerators have been attached to host systems using various generations of the PCI Express interface. However, with its lack of support for coherency between accelerator and host caches, fine-grained interactions require frequent cache-flushes, or even the use of inefficient uncached memory regions. The Cache Coherent Interconnect for Accelerators (CCIX) was the first multi-vendor standard for enabling cache-coherent host-accelerator attachments, and already is indicative of the capabilities of upcoming standards such as Compute Express Link (CXL). In our work, we compare-and-contrast the use of CCIX with PCIe when interfacing an ARM-based host with two generations of CCIX-enabled FPGAs. We provide both low-level throughput and latency measurements for accesses and address translation, as well as examine an application-level use-case of using CCIX for fine-grained synchronization in an FPGA-accelerated database system. We can show that especially smaller reads from the FPGA to the host can benefit from CCIX by having roughly 33% shorter latency than PCIe. Small writes to the host have a latency roughly 32% higher than PCIe, though, since they carry a higher coherency overhead. For the database use-case, the use of CCIX allowed to maintain a constant synchronization latency even with heavy host-FPGA parallelism.

In this paper we design transmit beampattern for 4D-imaging automotive radar systems. To this end, we consider spatial- Integrated Sidelobe Level (ISLR) as the design metric and optimize it under continuous and discrete phase constraints. The problem formulation leads to a quadratic fractional programming, where we propose an effective Coordinate Descent (CD) -based method to solve the problem, which minimizes the objective function monotonically. In every iterations of the proposed method, we find global optimum solution for a single variable problem under continuous phase constraint. Under discrete phase constraint, we use Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to solve problem which is efficient in terms of implementation. Through numerical simulations, we illustrate the performance of our proposed method and compare it with state-of-the art.

Satellite technology has advanced significantly, pri-marily in terms of miniaturization and intelligent capabilities. These advancements have facilitated the development of larger and more sophisticated satellites, which now enable on-board data processing. However, the dynamic topology and limited onboard computing resources of satellites present challenges for LEO constellations, hindering the timely processing of substantial amounts of accumulated user data. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a collaborative on-board processing frame- work that aims to optimize the utilization of onboard computing resources by effectively leveraging the available time window of inter-satellite links for information transfer and collaborative processing. To model this onboard processing framework, we use an integer programming model. Additionally, we recommend utilizing a simulated annealing algorithm to efficiently allocate computing resources. This algorithm has demonstrated its effi- ciency in addressing the resource allocation problem within the proposed framework.

We propose a dense tensor accelerator called VectorMesh, a scalable, memory-efficient architecture that can support a wide variety of DNN and computer vision workloads. Its building block is a tile execution unit (TEU), which includes dozens of processing elements (PEs) and SRAM buffers connected through a butterfly network. A mesh of FIFOs between the TEUs facilitates data exchange between tiles and promote local data to global visibility. Our design performs better according to the roofline model for CNN, GEMM, and spatial matching algorithms compared to state-of-the-art architectures. It can reduce global buffer and DRAM fetches by 2-22 times and up to 5 times, respectively.
