Bulk bitwise operations, i.e., bitwise operations on large bit vectors, are prevalent in a wide range of important application domains, including databases, graph processing, genome analysis, cryptography, and hyper-dimensional computing. In conventional systems, the performance and energy efficiency of bulk bitwise operations are bottlenecked by data movement between the compute units (e.g., CPUs and GPUs) and the memory hierarchy. In-flash processing (i.e., processing data inside NAND flash chips) has a high potential to accelerate bulk bitwise operations by fundamentally reducing data movement through the entire memory hierarchy, especially when the processed data does not fit into main memory. We identify two key limitations of the state-of-the-art in-flash processing technique for bulk bitwise operations;(i) it falls short of maximally exploiting the bit-level parallelism of bulk bitwise operations that could be enabled by leveraging the unique cell-array architecture and operating principles of NAND flash memory;(ii) it is unreliable because it is not designed to take into account the highly error-prone nature of NAND flash memory. We propose Flash-Cosmos (Flash Computation with One-Shot Multi-Operand Sensing), a new in-flash processing technique that significantly increases the performance and energy efficiency of bulk bitwise operations while providing high reliability. Flash-Cosmos introduces two key mechanisms that can be easily supported in modern NAND flash chips: (i) MultiWordline Sensing (MWS), which enables bulk bitwise operations on a large number of operands (tens of operands) with a single sensing operation, and (ii) Enhanced SLC-mode programming (ESP), which enables reliable computation inside NAND flash memory We demonstrate the feasibility of performing bulk bitwise operations with high reliability in Flash-Cosmos by testing 160 real 3D NAND flash chips. The rapid expansion and extensive integration of modern e-commerce have dramatically escalated consumer expectations regarding the speed of order fulfillment. In response, advanced smart warehouse technologies have emerged as pivotal solutions for optimizing distribution efficiency. This study focuses on addressing the challenge of batch order allocation within Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV)-based “goods-to-person” picking systems. It investigates a decentralized storage strategy aimed at facilitating batch picking across multiple orders simultaneously, thereby enhancing the efficiency of AGV operations. The research develops an integer programming model designed to minimize total AGV movements during batch order allocation. To optimize this model, an enhanced Firefly algorithm is introduced, featuring a dynamically adjusted parameter to expedite convergence during random operations. Experimental validation underscores the efficacy of both the model and algorithm, demonstrating significant improvements in batch order processing efficiency.

In this work we have experimented with the use of genetic programming as a feature selection method as well as a classifier to obtain business failure prediction models with different prediction temporal horizons. In the prediction models, a wide set of explanatory variables has been used, all of them based on the annual accounts of the company. In addition, an extended set of explanatory variables incorporating variables from the economic environment has been considered. Comparison of the prediction results between these alternatives shows a trend towards better results using the feature selection process, while there is no trend towards better results using economic environment variables.

programming courses often demonstrate poor aca-demic performance. To address this challenge, one strategy involves developing predictive models to identify students facing difficulties and implementing early interventions during the course. However, additional research is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of these predictions and interventions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of an academic performance prediction model in a programming course with few students, which proves to be a complex process due to the limited number of records. The methodology employed both a predictive model and a questionnaire focusing on motivating learning strategies. Results show that the proposed model achieves 86 % accuracy in its predictions, beginning from week 7 of the course.

Path planning is a key function of automatic parking systems, especially for parallel parking in tight spaces. A qualified planner should compute quickly, ensure optimality, and avoid extra halfway stops. This paper proposes a hybrid strategy to make up the shortcomings of geometric path planners by optimizing the pose and heading angle at the first entry point into the parking space. Considering the number of maneuvers in the limited parking space, the computation of the entry point is described as a nonlinear programming problem, and solved by the genetic algorithm offline. Based on these, feasible paths for different parallel parking spaces can be directly provided online using the parametric form of circular arcs. The effectiveness of the hybrid strategy is validated by comparative tests in several parallel parking spaces of varying sizes, and the details about adjusting maneuvers in the parking space are discussed. Additionally, the traceability of the planned paths is verified by experimental tests.

HPC systems have experienced significant growth over the past years, with modern machines having hundreds of thousands of nodes. Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the de facto standard for distributed computing on these architectures. On the MPI critical path, the message-matching process is one of the most time-consuming operations. In this process, searching for a specific request in a message queue represents a significant part of the communication latency. So far, no miracle algorithm performs well in all cases. This paper explores potential matching specializations thanks to hints introduced in the latest MPI 4.0 standard. We propose a hash-table-based algorithm that performs constant time message-matching for no wildcard requests. This approach is suitable for intensive point-to-point communication phases in many applications (more than 50% of CORAL benchmarks). We demonstrate that our approach can improve the overall execution time of real HPC applications by up to 25%. Also, we analyze the limitations of our method and propose a strategy for identifying the most suitable algorithm for a given application. Indeed, we apply machine learning techniques for classifying applications depending on their message pattern characteristics.

Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) was developed as a GPU parallel programming platform and API, primarily designed for use with C/C++. Over the years, fundamental linear algebra functionalities on CUDA have reached a mature state, and many of these are now accessible on CUDA’s GitHub repository. As other high-level programming languages have begun incorporating CUDA-compatible methods into their libraries, the Julia programming Language introduced CUDA support in 2021, aiming to offer an abstraction level similar to that of C implementations. However, research has shown that Julia’s linear algebra computations— despite leveraging CUDA for parallelization and computational reduction—have yet to match the execution speed achieved by C implementations. This study uses matrix multiplication as a representative linear algebra computation, given its well-optimized CUDA kernel. Outputs of the study include an NSight report file and an SQLite database, which are analysed using NVIDIA Nsight systems to assess each kernel's runtime and memory usage for performance evaluation. Findings indicate that Julia’s CUDA kernel invocation has a high runtime overhead, growing at a rate of O(n 2 ), which presents a bottleneck when performing high-throughput computations on square binary matrices. This paper suggests that resolving this issue may involve developing a custom CUDA kernel in Julia that employs a more efficient reduction technique to reduce overhead and enhance performance.

One of the most important aspects of work planning at the production system level is the contract negotiation process. In this process, it is necessary to negotiate the production volume as well as lead time acceptable to both the production system and the customer. Failure to obtain sufficiently accurate forecasts regarding order volume and task completion time may result in penalties and/or loss of new orders in the future. The article proposes an innovative approach to modeling complex production planning problems based on customer orders. What distinguishes this approach is the ability to determine which orders will not be fulfilled due to which tasks. The authors proposed the use of enterprise architecture in the process of the preliminary analysis to obtain various information from the organization affecting the functioning of the production system. This approach was demonstrated with an example for which a mathematical model was built, and the obtained simulation results are stored on an enterprise data bus for possible reuse at the enterprise level. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this study, a method of identifying the direct transfer function of a target plant using quaternion-valued neural networks (QVNNs) was proposed. Its possibility for controlling nonlinear system applications was also explored. The QVNN-based identifier predicted the future plant output in the model predictive control approach. The resulting prediction was used to define an objective function for deriving an optimal control input that facilitates the convergence of the plant output to the reference output. Computational experiments of the optimal predictive control using the QVNN-based identifier for a tracking task of a discrete-time nonlinear plant were performed. Experimental results confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the QVNN in the control application of nonlinear systems.

With the advancement of technology and the spread of multi-core systems, the need for parallelization arises and the interest in programming models is growing. At the same time, new distributed computing models have been proposed, being in fierce competition to obtain the highest possible performance. The Drop Computing Paradigm proposes the idea of decentralized computing over ad-hoc opportunistic networks of mobile and Edge devices. In this respect, the Drop Computing model does not only aim to achieve a minimum turnaround time but also to optimize other characteristics related to mobile devices, such as limited resources and opportunistic communication. Therefore, it is necessary to define a new programming model called DroMPI that intends to extend the capabilities of current parallel and distributed programming models, based on the Drop Computing paradigm. Therefore, the solution aims to develop a library that takes advantage of hardware capabilities in the interest of the Drop Computing paradigm and also provides programmers with a high-level programming interface. The library’s features will be based on the Message Passing Interface (MPI) standard, which will be responsible for inter-node parallelization. The name of the library, DroMPI, is an acronym for Drop Computing and MPI. The implementation of the model will be responsible for the management of communication between nodes and for providing an Application programming Interface (API) for the development of parallel applications in the Drop Computing paradigm.
