Recent trends in technology scaling have enabled the incorporation of multiple processor cores on a single die. Depending on the characteristics of the cores, the multicore may be either symmetric (SMP) or asymmetric (AMP). Several studies have shown that in general, for a given resource and power budget, AMPs are likely to outperform their SMP counterparts. However, due to the heterogeneity in AMPs, scheduling threads is always a challenge. To address the issue of thread scheduling in AMP, we propose a novel dynamic thread scheduling scheme that continuously monitors the current characteristics of the executing threads and determines the best thread to core assignment. The real-time monitoring is done using hardware performance counters that capture several microarchitecture independent characteristics of the threads in order to determine the thread to core affinity. By controlling thread scheduling in hardware, the Operating System (OS) need not be aware of the underlying microarchitecture, significantly simplifying the OS scheduler for an AMP architecture. The proposed scheme is compared against a simple Round Robin scheduling and a recently published dynamic thread scheduling technique that allows swapping of threads (between asymmetric cores) at coarse grain time intervals, once every context switch (~20 ms for the Linux scheduler). The presented results indicate that our proposed scheme is able to achieve, on average, a performance/watt benefit of 10.5% over the previously published dynamic scheduling scheme and about 12.9% over the Round Robin scheme.

Mobile and pervasive computing applications depend on environmental awareness, not just of their own local system and immediate surroundings, but increasingly of the network as a whole. Traditional models of context do not sufficiently account for the trade-off between accuracy, availability, and efficiency when considering the mechanisms by which context can be gathered and shared in mobile, ad-hoc networks. Traditional approaches to context remain egocentric, but next generation environments demand coordination among entities and access to shared context resources, and thus context must be treated as a combination of local and shared information. We motivate our perspective on the future of context in mobile pervasive environments staring with historical framing of the problem, and present our recent efforts in adaptive shared context perspectives.

In this paper, we present an informed prefetching technique called IPODS that makes use of application-disclosed access patterns to prefetch hinted blocks in distributed multi-level storage systems. We develop a prefetching pipeline in IPODS, where an informed prefetching process is divided into a set of independent prefetching steps among multiple storage levels in a distributed system. In the IPODS system, while data blocks are prefetched from hard disks to memory buffers in remote storage servers, data blocks buffered in the servers are prefetched through networks to clients' local cache. We show that these two prefetching steps can be handled in a pipelining manner to improve I/O performance of distributed storage systems. Our IPODS technique differs itself from existing prefetching schemes in two ways. First, IPODS reduces applications' I/O stalls by keeping hinted data in clients' local caches and storage servers' fast buffers (e.g., solid state disks). Second, in a prefetching pipeline, multiple informed prefetching mechanisms semi-dependently coordinate to fetch blocks (1) from low-level (slow) to high-level (fast) storage devices in servers and (2) from high-level devices in servers to clients' local cache. The prefetching pipeline in IPODS judiciously hides network latencies in distributed storage systems, thereby reducing the overall I/O access time in distributed systems. Using a wide range of real-world I/O traces, our experiments show that IPODS can improve noticeably I/O performance of distributed storage systems.

The recent use of graphics processing units (GPUs) in several top supercomputers demonstrate their ability to consistently deliver positive results in high-performance computing (HPC). GPU support for significant amounts of parallelism would seem to make them strong candidates for non-HPC applications as well. Server workloads are inherently parallel; however, at first glance they may not seem suitable to run on GPUs due to their irregular control flow and memory access patterns. In this work, we evaluate the performance of a widely used key-value store middleware application, Memcached, on recent integrated and discrete CPU+GPU heterogeneous hardware and characterize the resulting performance. To gain greater insight, we also evaluate Memcached's performance on a GPU simulator. This work explores the challenges in porting Memcached to OpenCL and provides a detailed analysis into Memcached's behavior on a GPU to better explain the performance results observed on physical hardware. On the integrated CPU+GPU systems, we observe up to 7.5X performance increase compared to the CPU when executing the key-value look-up handler on the GPU.

OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) is a powerful method for analyzing the excessive amount of data related to business intelligence applications. OLAP utilizes the efficient multidimensional data structure referred to as the OLAP cube to answer multi-faceted analytical queries. As queries become more complex and the dimensionality and size of the cube grows, the processing time required to aggregate queries increases. In this paper, we are proposing: (1) a parallel implementation of MOLAP cube using OpenMP, (2) a text-to-integer translation method to allow effective string processing on GPU, and (3) a new scheduling algorithm that support these new features. To be able to process string queries on the GPU, we are introducing a text-to-integer translation method which works with multiple dictionaries. The translation is necessary only for the GPU side of the system. To support the translation and parallel CPU implementation, a new scheduling algorithm is proposed. The scheduler divides multi-core processor(s) of a shared memory system into a processing partition and a preprocessing (or translation) partition. The performance of the new system is evaluated. The text-to-integer translation adds a new vital functionality to our system, however it also slows down the GPU processing by 7% when compare to original implementation without string support. The performance measurements indicate that due to the parallel implementation, the processing rate of the CPU partition improves from 12 to 110 queries per second. Moreover, the CPU partition is now able to process OLAP cubes of size 32 GB at rate of 11 queries per second. The total performance of the entire hybrid system (CPU + GPU) increased from 102 to 228 queries per second.

Along with the development of multicore architectures and cloud computing, concurrent programming and computation becomes a huge challenge for application developers. distributed environment turns into complexity and unpredictability. So it is important to improve programming models on language level to make it possible for programmers unfamiliar with distributed systems to build large-scale applications. Erlang is an actor-based functional programming language that provides language level elements for concurrency. It has capability of describing large quantities of concurrent actions by multiple-process, which communicates asynchronously by sending and receiving messages. But it lacks of data structures and mechanism of language level for inherent concurrent units with a simple way of interaction, which may impede programmers in concurrent programming. Comparing with other computing element models such as Active Object and Concurrent Agent, we extend Erlang with a new computing element called "EIC_Unit" and a way of interaction by "futures". It makes programmers to develop concurrent applications more easily and convenient in a distributed environment.

Scientists across a wide range of domains increasingly rely on computer simulation for their investigations. Such simulations often spend a majority of their run-times solving large systems of linear equations that require vast amounts of computational power and memory. It is hence critical to design solvers in a highly efficient and scalable manner. Hypre is a high performance, scalable software library that offers several optimized linear solver routines and pre-conditioners. In this paper, we study the characteristics of Hypre's Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) solver algorithm. The PCG routine is known to spend a majority of its communication time in the MPI All reduce operation to compute a global summation during the inner product operation. The MPI All reduce is a blocking operation, whose latency is often a limiting factor to the overall efficiency of the PCG solver routine, and correspondingly the performance of simulations that rely on this solver. Hence, hiding the latency of the MPI All reduce operation is critical towards scaling the PCG solver routine and improving the performance of many simulations. The upcoming revision of MPI, MPI-3, will provide support for non-blocking collective communication to enable latency-hiding. The latest InfiniBand adapter from Mellanox, ConnectX-2, enables offloading of generalized lists of communication operations to the network interface. Such an interface can be leveraged to design non-blocking collective operations. In this paper, we design fully functional, scalable algorithms for the MPI_Iallreduce operation, based on the network offload technology. To the best of our knowledge, these network offload-based algorithms are the first to be presented for the MPI_Iallreduce operation. Our designs scale beyond 512 processes and we achieve near perfect communication/computation overlap. The micro-grid is a kind of special form of active power distribution network, it provides a kind of effective method of the control of the distributed power for large-scale, and it is the beneficial supplement of the power grid. The power grid can run on the two conditions of parallel grid and islanding, and electricity can be absorbed by it from grid or provide grid with electricity when the condition of parallel grid; When the events of main power quality occur, the power grid can run separately from the main from. To test the transformation of two kinds of states fast and accurately, this paper introduces a kind of test methods of islanding based on the principle of impedance points pressure, and this detection circuit model of the micro-grid islanding is simulated by the software of MATLAB/Simulink, and the simulation results show that the islanding detection method does achieve the effect of the micro-grid islanding detection.
