Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems has attracted increasing attention over the last few years, as it has become apparent that input/output performance, rather than CPU performance, may be the key limiting factor in the performance of future systems. This I/O bottleneck is caused by the increasing speed mismatch between processing units and storage devices, the use of multiple processors operating simultaneously in parallel and distributedsystems, and by the increasing I/O demands of new classes of applications, like multimedia. It is also important to note that, to varying degrees, the I/O bottleneck exists at multiple levels of the memory hierarchy. All indications are that the I/O bottleneck will be with us for some time to come, and is likely to increase in importance. Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems is based on papers presented at the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops held in conjunction with the internationalparallel Processing symposium. This book is divided into three parts. Part I, the Introduction, contains four invited chapters which provide a tutorial survey of I/O issues in parallel and distributedsystems. The chapters in Parts II and III contain selected research papers from the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops; many of these papers have been substantially revised and updated for inclusion in this volume. Part II collects the papers from both years which deal with various aspects of system software, and Part III addresses architectural issues. Input/Output in parallel and distributed Computer systems is suitable as a secondary text for graduate level courses in computer architecture, softwareengineering, and multimedia systems, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

An essential part of the empirical optimization used by auto-tuning libraries is the generation of reliable data and therefore the timing procedures used to determine the performance of different codelets. In this paper, we present an enhancement to the Abstract Data and Communication Library (ADCL), an empirical optimization library for communication operations. The new timer object allows to measure not only the execution time of a codelet itself, but also (part of) its environment. We evaluate the impact of the timer object for generating accurate empirical data by comparing four different timing methods to optimize collective MPI communications, and compare their accuracy for the FFT NAS parallel Benchmarks on a variety of systems with different MPI implementations. The results indicate, that one of the methods based on the timer object, namely timing larger code portions with synchronization points after some iterations, performs well on all systems.
The exponential increase in the generation and collection of data has led us in a new era of data analysis and information extraction. Conventional systems based on general-purpose processors are unable to keep pace w...

Enterprise information management systems, such as ERP, CRM, SCM etc, play a vital role in large-scale companies, allowing optimisation of production. Many times, the management of these systems may be difficult and expensive;this mainly occurs with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). One of the solutions that may be adopted to limit the costs and requirements of ERP system is its integration into a Grid platform. The paper deals with the problem of integration of ERP system into Grid environment, focusing on the deployment of SAP ERP Services on Grid.

Computational Intelligence systems (CIS) is one of advanced softwares. CIS has been important position for solving single-objective / reverse / inverse and multi-objective design problems in engineering. The paper hybridise a CIS for optimisation with the concept of Nash-Equilibrium as an optimisation pre-conditioner to accelerate the optimisation process. The hybridised CIS (Hybrid Intelligence System) coupled to the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tool and one type of Computer Aided Design (CAD) system;GiD is applied to solve an inverse engineering design problem;reconstruction of High Lift systems (HLS). Numerical results obtained by the hybridised CIS are compared to the results obtained by the original CIS. The benefits of using the concept of Nash-Equilibrium are clearly demonstrated in terms of solution accuracy and optimisation efficiency.
Embedded systems with several heterogeneous processors require scheduling techniques that are able to make use of the parallel processors while at the same time keeping resource consumption low. In this paper, we ther...
