This book represents the combined peer-reviewed proceedings of the Fifth internationalsymposium on Intelligent distributed Computing -- IDC 2011 and of the Third international Workshop on Multi-Agent systems Technology and Semantics -- MASTS 2011. Both events were held in Delft, The Netherlands during October 5-7, 2011. The 33 contributions published in this book address many topics related to theory and applications of intelligent distributed computing and multi-agent systems, including: adaptive and autonomous distributedsystems, agent programming, ambient assisted living systems, business process modeling and verification, cloud computing, coalition formation, decision support systems, distributed optimization and constraint satisfaction, gesture recognition, intelligent energy management in WSNs, intelligent logistics, machine learning, mobile agents, parallel and distributed computational intelligence, parallel evolutionary computing, trust metrics and security, scheduling in distributed heterogenous computing environments, semantic Web service composition, social simulation, and software agents for WSNs.
Bayesian networks (BN) are probabilistic graphical models which are widely utilized in modeling complex biological interactions in the cell. Learning the structure of a BN is an NP-hard problem and existing exact and ...

The IEC 61499 standard allows to model and design new generation control systems, providing innovative concepts of softwareengineering (such as abstraction, encapsulation, reuse) to the world of control engineering. The industrial reception of the standard, however, is still in an early stage, also because its introduction results in the adoption of a programming paradigm profoundly different than the widespread IEC 61131-3. This paper presents a method for the integration of the two standards, that allows to exploit the benefits of both. The proposed architecture is based on the parallel execution of both environments that interact with each other through some specific interfaces. A test implementation of the architecture is also presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution.

Brazil, like other emerging countries such as China and India are increasing significantly their importance as global players. The Brazilian economic relevance gains more importance with its economic growth and industry expansion. This economic growth also reflects on embedded systems design that expands following the market demand for new products. The Brazilian developments are ubiquitous in different areas: industrial automation, automobiles, home appliances, electronic consumers etc. A statistical survey was conducted to evaluate the embedded system development in Brazil, to identify the developer's profile and the main characteristics of embedded projects. The main results indicate that Brazilian embedded developer is generally young, no older than 35 years old and has a maximum of 10 years of embedded system design experience. They also show that embedded project developed in Brazil, are commonly linked to new products, last more than 6 months and usually are delayed considering the initial schedule.

Many fields of science and engineering, such as astronomy, medical imaging, seismology and spectroscopy, have been revolutionized by Fourier methods. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) is an efficient algorithm to compute the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and its inverse. The emerging class of high performance computing architectures, such as GPU, seeks to achieve much higher performance and efficiency by exposing a hierarchy of distinct memories to programmers. However, the complexity of GPU programming poses a significant challenge for programmers. In this paper, based on the Kronecker product form multi-dimensional FFTs, we propose an automatic performance tuning framework for various OpenCL GPUs. Several key techniques of GPU programming on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs are also identified. Our OpenCL FFT library achieves up to 1.5 to 4 times, 1.5 to 40 times and 1.4 times the performance of clAmdFft 1.0 for 1D, 2D and 3D FFT respectively on an AMD GPU, and the overall performance is within 90% of CUFFT 4.0 on two NVIDIA GPUs.
