Using the probably approximately correct (PAC) learning hypothesis, we have conducted experiments using clustered computers, high-performance workstations and ad-hoc grids of personal computers, to develop an analytical model for, and demonstrate asymptotic convergence of simple parallel search in the parameter space of complex environmental models such as the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). SWAT calibration for hydrological flow, N and P is, for our test cases, superior to current genetic algorithms, as well as to SWAT-CUP, a multi-paradigm calibration solver and to its components. With more complex models, there is no current alternative to our approach in a realizable wall-clock time.

Model Based Development within the area of embedded systems hardware-software co-design has been demonstrated to be effective to handle system complexity. Several modeling formalisms are widely used within this area. The work presented in this paper aims to contribute for the usage of Petri nets as the system-level specification language within model-based development of embedded systems using co-design techniques. System model partitioning into modules and components ready to be implemented in hardware or software and be deployed into a distributed platform is a major concern within co-design methodologies. Having Petri net as underlying modeling formalisms the net splitting operation can be used in order to decompose the model into several sub-models. The resulted sub-models can be seen as components and executed in parallel communicating using directed synchronous communication channels. In this paper it is presented how to modify the splitted model in order to be considered as composable modules, supporting module reutilization, which is a key impact factor within engineering activities. The proposed techniques rely on keeping the module interface unchanged in order to support the integration of the module in new situations.

This paper studies the general properties for a class of queuing network models that at the thread level, characterize a class of single-core multithreaded processors with various thread scheduling disciplines and parallel resources. In particular, we find the general conditions under which the bottleneck resources are bound to appear. Our simulation testing demonstrates that these general conditions accurately predict when a bottleneck resource appears. The test of these conditions only involves estimation of some workload related parameters, making it possible to quickly identify bottleneck resources without actually running the program in the processor. We also demonstrate how these general conditions, combined with any given caching model, can lead to useful algorithms for thread and cache resource provisioning that maximizes the throughput performance.

This is a sample Simulation tools help creating a low cost and efficient development of embedded system. SID is an open source simulator software that consists library of components for modelling hardware and software components. A component can be written in C/C++ and Tcl/Tk. Currently, the SID simulation toolkit only provides support for C++ and Tcl/Tk. Tcl/Tk is used to create GUI-based components. However, we have observed that Tcl/Tk components causing slow simulation response. Developing GUI using Tcl/Tk is also inflexible. Thus it is not proper for developing the cutting-edge products with rich graphics. In this work, we introduced the idea of Java as an alternative platform for developing components in SID. We enabled this possibility by developing a bridge module for SID using socket and JNI. SID API in Java is also proposed to ensure the compatibility and simplicity of SID components in Java.
