Our earlier embedded QoS-aware residential gateway (EmQRG) for real-time class-based queuing (CBQ) bandwidth management is reviewed and experimentally demonstrated. EmQRG's high QoS is demonstrated in conjunction with a wireless ZigBee network of temperature/humidity monitoring sensors. Critically, the EmQRG sends a top-priority over-temperature alarm when any temperature/humidity module reports a temperature exceeding a preset value. This emergency signal has top EmQRG transmission priority. Experiments verify the over-temperature alarm sends/receives “immediately” regardless of heavy network congestion or bottlenecking. The presented system easily expands to extensive networks containing many parallel systems or embedded sub-systems. The presented system is cost-effective implementable with available hardware and software.

parallelisation, serial optimisation, compiler tuning, and many more techniques are used to optimise and improve the performance scaling of parallel programs. One area which is frequently not optimised is file I/O. This is because it is often not considered to be key to the performance of a program and also because it is traditionally difficult to optimise and very machine specific. However, in the current era of Peta- and Exascale computing it is no longer possible to ignore I/O performance as it can significantly limit the scaling of many codes when executing on very large numbers of processors or cores. Furthermore, as producing data is the main purpose of most simulation codes any work that can be undertaken to provide improved performance of I/0 can be applicable to a very large range of simulation codes, and provide them with improved functionality (i.e. the ability to produce more data).This paper describes some of the issues surrounding I/O, the technology that is commonly deployed to provide I/O on HPC machines and the software libraries available to programmers to undertake I/O. The performance of all these aspects of I/O on a range of HPC systems were investigated by the authors and a represented in this paper to motivate the discussions in the paper.

In the last few years, the growing significance of data-intensive computing has been closely tied to the emergence and popularity of new programming paradigms for this class of applications, including Map-Reduce, and new high-level languages for data-intensive computing. The ultimate goal of these efforts in data-intensive computing has been to achieve parallelism with as little effort as possible, while supporting high efficiency and scalability. While these are also the goals that the parallel language/compiler community has tried meeting for the past several decades, the development of languages and programming systems for data-intensive computing has largely been in isolation to the developments in general parallel programming. Such independent developments in the two areas, i.e., data-intensive computing and high productivity languages lead to the following questions: I) Are HPC languages suitable for expressing data-intensive computations? and if so, II.a) What are the issues in using them for effective parallel programming? or, if not, II.b) What characteristics of data-intensive computations force the need for separate language support?. This paper takes a case study to address these questions. Particularly, we study the suitability of Chapel for expressing data-intensive computations. We also examine compilation techniques required for directly invoking a data-intensive middleware from Chapel's compilation system. The data-intensive middleware we use in this effort is FREERIDE that has been developed at Ohio State. We show how certain transformations can enable efficient invocation of the FREERIDE functions from the Chapel compiler. Our experiments show that after certain optimizations, the performance of the version of Chapel compiler that invokes FREERIDE functions is quite comparable to the performance of hand-written data-intensive applications.

As many-core graphics processors gain an increasingly important position concerning the advancements on modern highly concurrent processors, we are experiencing the deployment of the first heterogeneous clusters that are based on GPUs. The attempts to match future expectations in computational power and energy saving with hybrid - GPU-based - clusters are expected to grow in the next years, and much of their success will depend on the provision of the appropriate programming tools. In the current paper we propose a programming model for GPU clusters that is based on shared memory abstraction. We give evidence for the applicability of the proposed model under two cases. In the first case we describe an implementation procedure that involves the utilization of Intel Cluster OpenMP, a cluster-enabled OpenMP implementation. Subsequently, we present an extended version of Pleiad, a cluster middleware which is based on the Java platform. The evaluation of these schemes under two characteristic computationally intensive applications on a 4-node multi-GPU cluster, reveals that such approaches can easily enhance existing GPU software development tools, such as CUDA, and they can lead to a significant acceleration of applications that can benefit from many-core GPU clusters.

With the development of cloud computing, cloud security issues have recently gained traction in the research community. Although much of the efforts are focused on securing the operation system and virtual machine, or securing data storage inside a cloud system, this paper takes an alternative perspective to cloud security-the security of data migration between different clouds. First, we describe some threats when we are doing data migration. Second, we propose a security mechanism to deal with the security issues on data migration from one cloud to another. Third, we design a prototype to give the mechanism a brief implementation based on HDFS (Hadoop distributed File System) and we do a series of tests to evaluate our prototype. Here, the solutions to securing data migration between clouds mainly involve in SSL negotiation, migration ticket design and block encryption in distributed file system and cluster parallel computing.

This paper handle the design and implementation of the SIMD Vector Processor on FPGA, this processor consist of 4 parallel lanes (processing elements PEs) that work simultaneously independent with each other, each one of those lanes has its own arithmetic units, vector register file which represents a part of the main distributed register file also it has a local memory for storage of execution results of that lane, lanes's local memories connects to each other to exchange their contains via interconnection networking that can be configure software to give a certain topology of static interconnection network, like (Mesh, Star,...etc) those lanes and their memories act a vector part of the SIMD Vector Processor. A scalar processor also designed and attached with the vector part in order to accomplish scalar instructions that can not be handle by vector lanes, this processor also has its scalar register file and set of arithmetic units.

Graph isomorphism problem has applications in many fields, such as chemistry, computer science, electronics, and network theory. But the exponential complexity of the algorithm makes the testing is time consuming. In this paper, a new algorithm named Unique Vertex Delete (UVD for short) is presented to speed up the process of isomorphic testing. The main idea of UVD algorithm is deleting vertex continuously to reduce the scale of the problem, and new field is added for each vertex to indicate the information of deleted neighbor vertices. Theoretical analysis and experiments show that the UVD algorithm consistently and significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches.

The emerging data-intensive applications of today are comprised of non-uniform CPU and I/O intensive workloads, thus imposing a requirement to consider both CPU and I/O effects in the power management strategies. Only scaling down the processor's frequency based on its busy/idle ratio cannot fully exploit opportunities of saving power. Our experiments show that besides the busy and idle status, each processor may also have I/O wait phases waiting for I/O operations to complete. During this period, the completion time is decided by the I/O subsystem rather than the CPU thus scaling the processor to a lower frequency will not affect the performance but save more power. In addition, the CPU's reaction to the I/O operations may be significantly affected by several factors, such as I/O type (sync or unsync), instruction/job level parallelism, it cannot be accurately modeled via physics laws like mechanical or chemical systems. In this paper, we propose a novel power management scheme called MAR (modeless, adaptive, rule-based) in multiprocessor systems to minimize the CPU power consumption under performance constraints. By using richer feedback factors, e.g. the I/O wait, MAR is able to accurately describe the relationships among core frequencies, performance and power consumption. We adopt a modeless control model to reduce the complexity of system modeling. MAR is designed for CMP (Chip Multi Processor) systems by employing multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) theory and per core level DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling). Our extensive experiments on a physical test bed demonstrate that, for the SPEC benchmark and data-intensive (TPC-C) benchmark, the efficiency of MAR is 93.6-96.2\% accurate to the ideal power saving strategy calculated off-line. Compared with baseline solutions, MAR could save 22.5-32.5\% more power while keeping the comparable performance loss of about 1.8-2.9\%. A new integrated SAR signal processor, geo-coding and interferometric processing commercial software (GeoWatch software) has been developed. It supports high speed and large data processing based on ERS-1&2, ENVISAT, ALOS PALSAR, JERS-1, RADARSAT-1&2, TerraSAT and CSK SAR data, with user friendly GUI and parallel processing on the latest 64 bit Windows and UNIX/Linux systems and both personal computers and powerful multicore CPU+GPU cluster platforms. It has been applied to the DSM estimation in a mountain area and subsidence estimation at an airport using its application-oriented step-by-step pipeline processing, and the results showed the following key features: 1. Deformation monitoring coverage expansion from coherent points to distributed scatters; 2. Deformation monitoring period reduction and accuracy improving by multi-track SAR interferometric processing; 3. Truly ortho-rectified interferogram, image, digital surface model (DSM) and deformation map production.

This paper presents an approach for scheduling U-Life care applications in the cloud computing environment based on virtual resources to support real-time services and to improve user Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. We design and develop an architecture called ULC3 (Ubiquitous Life Care Cloud Computing) that uses virtual resources provided by cloud computing to schedule U-Life care applications. The ULC3 is based on the concepts of cloud computing and wireless sensor networks. The architecture is very important and necessary to support create virtual clusters dynamically, deploys the required number of virtual machines (VMs) in potential computing resources to meet the application requirements, and to configure with the required software execution environment. Thus, the system can improve computation time, guarantee the QoS, and support real-time services. Finally, the results from the execute applications are provided to the end-users as a service.
