Today's embedded systems are considering cache as inherent part of their design. Unfortunately, cache memory behavior heavily depends on the past references which model a large execution history and makes WCET analysis impractical. This paper presents a novel prefetch memory mechanism that simplifies the prediction of cache hits/misses because the memory access times are independent of the execution history. We use local prefetching into on-chip memory together with a custom-designed prefetch controller instead of cache memories to provide for time-predictable memory accesses. To be competitive in code execution time, our approach relies on a special organization of main memory and on a modified compiler that generates code layouts to allow for parallel prefetching from different memory banks. The proposed solution is still in a conceptual phase. The paper discusses design decisions and parameters to be explored.

In large organizations or IDCs, different departments always occupy and maintain dedicated resources to satisfy their or their customers' heterogeneous application loads. This situation easily makes the infrastructure management a repeated and inefficient work. Even worse, it is difficult to share the resources owned by different departments even when they are idle, because the application modes on these resources are quite different. This paper introduces a live system, Vega LingCloud, which provides a Resource Single Leasing Point System for consolidated renting physical and virtual machines to support heterogeneous application modes on shared infrastructure. Furthermore, we present the asset-leasing model and the architecture of Vega LingCloud. According to the evaluation, Vega LingCloud is better than other systems like Open Nebula and Enomaly ECP in the aspects of uniformity, flexibility, security, usability, and efficiency. The experimental result of management overhead shows that the deployment speed of virtual machine in Vega LingCloud is 4.1 times of that in the Open Nebula and VIDA hybrid system for deploying 64 virtual machines concurrently. From a representative micro-cloud example in a research group, we show that the consolidated way of leasing physical and virtual machine in Vega LingCloud is approbatory. Up to now, Vega LingCloud has been deployed in real world environments, which include a private cloud of large organization in Beijing and a public cloud in the Dongguan IDC of China. The resource scale of the Dongguan cloud reaches about 504 cores, 625 GB memory, and 156 TB storage. The number of supported real applications in Beijing and Dongguan clouds has exceeded 35, and their modes involve high performance computing, large scale data processing, virtual machine leasing, data storage, and so on.

iWARP is a state of the art high-speed connection-based RDMA networking technology for Ethernet networks to provide InfiniBand-like zero-copy and one-sided communication capabilities over Ethernet. Despite the benefits offered by iWARP, many data center and web-based applications, such as stock-market trading and media-streaming applications, that rely on data gram-based semantics (mostly through UDP/IP) cannot take advantage of it because the iWARP standard is only defined over reliable, connection-oriented transports. This paper presents an RDMA model that functions over reliable and unreliable data grams. The ability to use data grams significantly expands the application space serviced by iWARP and can bring the scalability advantages of a connectionless transport to iWARP. In our previous work, we had developed an iWARP data gram solution using send/receive semantics showing excellent memory scalability and performance benefits over the current TCP-based iWARP. In this paper, we demonstrate an improved iWARP design that provides true RDMA semantics over data grams. Specifically, because traditional RDMA semantics do not map well to unreliable communication, we propose RDMA Write-Record, the first and the only method capable of supporting RDMA Write over both unreliable and reliable data grams. We demonstrate through a proof-of-concept software implementation that data gram-iWARP is feasible for real-world applications. Our proposed RDMA Write-Record method has been designed with data loss in mind and can provide superior performance under conditions of packet loss. It is shown through micro-benchmarks that by using RDMA capable data gram-iWARP a maximum of 256% increase in large message bandwidth and a maximum of 24.4\% improvement in small message latency can be achieved over traditional iWARP. Recent embedded systems like mobile phones and digital TV appliances have been increasing their functionalities. These systems become very complex, but new products should be developed with short time-to-market. Therefore, future embedded systems that will be more complex require a new software infrastructure that industries can develop new products faster by reusing existing software as much as possible. In our project, we are developing SPUMONE which is able to compose multiple functionalities with a minimum cost. SPUMONE enables multiple OSes to coexist on a single system. Therefore, most of existing application programs require no modification. For satisfying the requirements of embedded systems, one of the most important goal of SPUMONE is to satisfy real-time constraints of real-time OSes. When real-time OS and general purpose OS like Linux run at the same time, the real-time OS can ensure the real-time responsiveness. It is also important to ensure security in future embedded systems that is always connected to the Internet. Increasing the complexity and functionality in embedded systems makes the OS kernel more vulnerable from malicious programs. This raises the need of the integrity management system for the general purpose OS kernel. The integrity management system that observes the behavior of kernel activities from the outside of the OS kernel is promising approach to increase the security of the general purpose OS kernel. However, traditional integrity management systems require extra resources and do not take into account the monitoring on a multi-core processor. The monitoring service which is an integrity management system running on SPUMONE as a new OS personality checks the integrity of data structures in the general purpose OS kernel. It also takes into account running on a multi-core processor. Therefore, the monitoring service and the general purpose OS can run on different cores to reduce the overhead of the integrity management.

Model-driven runtime resource predictions for advanced mechatronic systems with dynamic data structures

The next generation of advanced mechatronic systems is expected to enhance their functionality and improve their performance by context-dependent behavior. Therefore, these systems require to represent information about their complex environment and changing sets of collaboration partners internally. This requirement is in contrast to the usually assumed static structures of embedded systems. In this paper, we present a model-driven approach which overcomes this situation by supporting dynamic data structures while still guaranteeing that valid worst-case execution times can be derived. It supports a flexible resource manager which avoids to operate with the prohibitive coarse worst-case boundaries but instead supports to run applications in different profiles which guarantee different resource requirements and put unused resources in a profile at other applications' disposal. By supporting the proper estimation of worst case execution time (WCET) and worst case number of iteration (WCNI) at runtime, we can further support to create new profiles, add or remove them at runtime in order to minimize the over-approximation of the resource consumption resulting from the dynamic data structures required for the outlined class of advanced systems.

Image processing is becoming more and more present in our everyday life. With the requirements of miniaturization, low-power, performance in order to provide some intelligent processing directly into the camera, embedded camera will dominate the image processing landscape in the future. While the common approach of developing such embedded systems is to use sequentially operating processors, image processing algorithms are inherently parallel, thus hardware devices like FP-GAs provide a perfect match to develop highly efficient systems. Unfortunately hardware development is more difficult and there are less experts available compared to software. Automatizing the design process will leverage the existing infrastructure, thus providing faster time to market and quick investigation of new algorithms. We exploit ASP (answer set programming) for system synthesis with the goal of genarating an optimal hardware software partitioning, a viable communication structure and the corresponding scheduling, from an image processing application.

As reported by many recent studies, the mean time between failures of future post-petascale supercomputers is likely to reduce, compared to the current situation. The most popular fault tolerance approach for MPI applications on HPC Platforms relies on coordinated check pointing which raises two major issues: a) global restart wastes energy since all processes are forced to rollback even in the case of a single failure, b) checkpoint coordination may slow down the application execution because of congestions on I/O resources. Alternative approaches based on uncoordinated check pointing and message logging require logging all messages, imposing a high memory/storage occupation and a significant overhead on communications. It has recently been observed that many MPI HPC applications are send-deterministic, allowing to design new fault tolerance protocols. In this paper, we propose an uncoordinated check pointing protocol for send-deterministic MPI HPC applications that (i) logs only a subset of the application messages and (ii) does not require to restart systematically all processes when a failure occurs. We first describe our protocol and prove its correctness. Through experimental evaluations, we show that its implementation in MPICH2 has a negligible overhead on application performance. Then we perform a quantitative evaluation of the properties of our protocol using the NAS Benchmarks. Using a clustering approach, we demonstrate that this protocol actually succeeds to combine the two expected properties: a) it logs only a small fraction of the messages and b) it reduces by a factor approaching 2 the average number of processes to rollback compared to coordinated check pointing.

The purpose of the research is to develop the Real-Time and FPGA frame to rapidly create an AUV system with multi-functions. To achieve this goal, the NI-CompactRIO controller is adopted because of its small size, high stability and the standing alone work of the feature. It belongs to an intelligent embedded Real-Time processor. And this controller is based on FPGA core for embedded systems with parallel execution capabilities, high compatibility, and provides modular connection interface. The LabVIEW graphical programming software and collocate the Real-Time/ FPGA software module is used to establish the AUV's Human-Machine Interface (HMI) which integrate the software and hardware equipments and simplify the procedure artificial processing to provide perfect humanity operation interface. At the same time it also provides a multi-faceted message display and Real-Time data analysis functions to easily control the processing conditions. The performance tests for the AUV prototype developed here have been successfully done in the towing tank and near-shore sea and the preliminary design criteria is achieved.
