It has been identified that as complexity of computing and communication devices increases, fault-tolerance will gain more and more importance. Wireless sensor networks(WSNs) are exceptionally complex distributed systems where a variety of components interact in a complex way and should therefore help narrow down failures and diagnose their causes, as much as possible, with minimal physical access and interactivity. In this paper, we present an algorithm for isolating malfunctioning nodes in WSNs and provide two parallel variants of it: Na?ve and Greedy. The algorithm is based on the idea that a covered node can be turned off and that turning off a malfunctioning node causes the WSN to function properly. The experiments we conducted show that the Na?ve Approach is very precise in locating malfunctioning nodes whereas the Greedy Approach is very fast in finding a cover free of such nodes.

Model predictive control (MPC) is an established control strategy used in the process industry, its computational efficiency becomes the main hindrance to its application in fast sampled systems, such as in motion control problems. Unlike controllers for process industries, the motion controller must have specific properties, including limited size and high sampling frequency. To meet these requirements, we explore the implementation of a specified new MPC with swarm intelligence, called PSO-MPC, on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip. Standard PSO is modified so as to be applied in MPC. The FPGA chip addresses size constraints, and the PSO-MPC -on-chip strategy satisfies the need for high sampling frequency by exploiting the parallel features of both the PSO-MPC and the FPGA chip. A constrained control problem with 3 controlled variables and a prediction horizon of 10 is solved in 1 ms. This verifies the applicability and effectiveness of PSO-MPC-on-chip strategy.

Mobile Internet access has significantly increased over the past few years. Roaming into foreign networks becomes necessary in order to access mobile-services. Traditionally, this done based on roaming agreement between the home network and the foreign network to extend trust for mobile users. However, secured mobile authentication is a challenge especially in two-party authentication environment where only the visited user and the foreign network get involved. This paper proposes two-party secure roaming protocols based on direct negotiation with potential foreign networks regarding quality of service, pricing and other billing related features, in order to establish service agreement and get the authorization token. The paper provides better performance to check the revocation status of the mobile user using recency evidence compare to the previously used revocation list. Identity Based Signature is used to stop impersonation attack. The security and performance analysis indicates that our protocol is resistant to well-known attacks, and it ensures efficient roaming.

As interest in adopting Cloud computing for various applications is rapidly growing, it is important to understand how these applications and systems will perform when deployed on Clouds. Due to the scale and complexity of shared resources, it is often hard to analyze the performance of new scheduling and provisioning algorithms on actual Cloud test beds. Therefore, simulation tools are becoming more and more important in the evaluation of the Cloud computing model. Simulation tools allow researchers to rapidly evaluate the efficiency, performance and reliability of their new algorithms on a large heterogeneous Cloud infrastructure. However, current solutions lack either advanced application models such as message passing applications and workflows or scalable network model of data center. To fill this gap, we have extended a popular Cloud simulator (CloudSim) with a scalable network and generalized application model, which allows more accurate evaluation of scheduling and resource provisioning policies to optimize the performance of a Cloud infrastructure.

The elastic, thermal expansion, and plastic anisotropy of Sn is examined to assess how anisotropy affects the microstructural evolution and damage nucleation processes in SAC305 solder joints. Examination of all joints in a package indicates that upon solidification, crystal orientations are nearly randomly distributed. Initial studies of cracked joints after thermal cycling showed that orientations with the c-axis parallel to the joint interface (red orientations) are more likely to crack arising from tensile stresses during the hot part of the cycle. Subsequent studies show that package design has a large influence on how the microstructure evolves; higher strain designs stimulate recrystallization at earlier times. Recrystallization appears to be strongly correlated with crack nucleation and propagation processes, as red orientations often develop and lead to crack nucleation and propagation. The details of the recrystallization process depend strongly on the plastic slip and recovery processes arising from the specific crystal orientation/temperature/strain history that makes microstructural evolution of each joint unique. The unique history for each joint implies that worst case scenarios need to be identified and models developed that can predict microstructural evolution that leads to worst case scenarios.

We report our effort in engineering a high performance remote method invocation (RMI) mechanism for the Common Component Architecture (CCA). This mechanism provides a highly efficient and easy-to-use mechanism for distributed computing in CCA, enabling CCA applications to effectively leverage parallel systems to accelerate computations. This work is built on the previous work of Babel RMI. Babel is a high performance language interoperability tool that is used in CCA for scientific application writers to share, reuse, and compose applications from software components written in different programming languages. Babel provides a transparent and flexible RMI framework for distributed computing. However, the existing Babel RMI implementation is built on top of TCP and does not provide the level of performance required to distribute fine-grained tasks. We observed that the main reason the TCP based RMI does not perform well is because it does not utilize the high performance interconnect hardware on a cluster efficiently. We have implemented a high performance RMI protocol, HPCRMI. HPCRMI achieves low latency by building on top of a low-level portable communication library, Aggregated Remote Message Copy Interface (ARMCI), and minimizing communication for each RMI call. Our design allows a RMI operation to be completed by only two RDMA operations. We also aggressively optimize our system to reduce copying. In this paper, we discuss the design and our experimental evaluation of this protocol. Our experimental results show that our protocol can improve RMI performance by an order of magnitude.

This paper presents a numerical framework that enables scalable, parallel execution of engineering simulations on multi-core, shared memory architectures. Distribution of the simulations is done by selective hash-tabling of the model domain which spatially decomposes it into a number of orthogonal computational tasks. These tasks, the size of which is critical to optimal cache blocking and consequently performance, are then distributed for execution to multiple threads using the previously presented task management algorithm, H-Dispatch. Two numerical methods, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), are discussed in the present work, although the framework is general enough to be used with any explicit time integration scheme. The implementation of both SPH and the LBM within the parallel framework is outlined, and the performance of each is presented in terms of speed-up and efficiency. On the 24-core server used in this research, near linear scalability was achieved for both numerical methods with utilization efficiencies up to 95%. To close, the framework is employed to simulate fluid flow in a porous rock specimen, which is of broad geophysical significance, particularly in enhanced oil recovery.

Some transceivers operate in the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band. Usually Wireless sensor nodes are mostly battery operated and in many applications they are placed unattended. It requires designing both hardware and software that consume very low power during the operations. Current size of the wireless sensor node is in the order of millimeter. Scientists and engineers are trying to reduce its size near to the size of dust particle. This offers a challenge to design wireless sensor nodes that consume low power. Transceiver has a very important role in these nodes. In this paper we have proposed an Ultra low power small size RF transceiver. The proposed chip has contained five blocks which are power amplifier (PA), low noise amplifier (LNA), crystal oscillator (XO), Phase Locked Loop (PLL), and intermediate frequency(IF). It incorporates less number of low-dropout regulators (LDO). It has also proposed to decrease the number of beneficiary components by giving the same job to other components in a distributed way. Also the reduction of enable pins on the chip reduced the size of chip.

Integration efforts in today's manufacturing environments tend to enable service-based communication interfaces between enterprise and manufacturing systems. Constantly changing business conditions demand a high level of flexibility in business processes as well as an adaptive and fully interoperable IT infrastructure. The principles of reusability and loosely-coupled services have driven Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to become the most used paradigm for software design at the business level. In a manufacturing environment, event-driven architectures (EDA) are often employed for managing information flows across different production systems. The timely propagation of business-relevant events is a fundamental requirement in Engineer-to-Order (ETO) enterprises, which require a high level of transparency in their supply chains. Agility is one of the top priorities for ETO manufacturers in order to react to turbulent scenarios. Therefore, the main challenge for ETO supply chains is to identify and propagate events across the ETO logistics network and integrate these into the manufacturer business processes. We present how an existing service-oriented integration platform for manufacturing can be used to fill the gap between EDA-based manufacturing environments of an ETO supply chain and SOA-based manufacturer business processes. In this paper, we discuss the benefits of the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) as vehicle for this integration. The adoption of BPEL will enable an efficient and effective reaction to turbulent manufacturing scenarios in an ETO supply chain.
