Performance prediction is valuable in different areas of computing. The popularity of lease-based access to high performance computing resources particularly benefits from accurate performance prediction. Most contemporary processors are employing multiple computing cores, which complicates the task of performance prediction. In this paper, we describe the methodology employed for predicting the performance of a popular weather forecasting application on systems with between 4 and 256 processors. An average prediction error of less than 10% was achieved after testing on three different multi-node, multicore systems.

The evolution of concentration values in a turbulent flow is quantified by the probability density function (PDF) of concentration or more simply by the expected mass fraction function (EMF). It is convenient to use some lower-order moments to approximate the PDF or EMF. In this paper a particularly simple representation of these moments is explored. Concentration measurements using planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) are made over the cross-section of a fluorescent plume emanating from a point source in a grid-turbulence flow in a water tunnel. It is observed that the distributed moments across the plume are determined from a 'local' concentration scale and the mean concentration profile. The moments of the EMF appear to be related to the center-line moments and the EMF to have a simple, self-similar form when scaled with the center-line mean concentration.

Cloud computing [23] is a promising paradigm for the provisioning of IT services. Cloud computing infrastructures, such as those offered by the RESERVOIR project, aim to facilitate the deployment, management and execution of services across multiple physical locations in a seamless manner. In order for service providers to meet their quality of service objectives, it is important to examine how software architectures can be described to take full advantage of the capabilities introduced by such platforms. When dealing with software systems involving numerous loosely coupled components, architectural constraints need to be made explicit to ensure continuous operation when allocating and migrating services from one host in the Cloud to another. In addition, the need for optimising resources and minimising over-provisioning requires service providers to control the dynamic adjustment of capacity throughout the entire service lifecycle. We discuss the implications for software architecture definitions of distributed applications that are to be deployed on Clouds. In particular, we identify novel primitives to support service elasticity, co-location and other requirements, propose language abstractions for these primitives and define their behavioural semantics precisely by establishing constraints on the relationship between architecture definitions and Cloud management infrastructures using a model denotational approach in order to derive appropriate service management cycles. As to distributed processing environment, the intractable problem is that process's current state is indeterminate, which could bring some security issues such as diffusing action. We put forward a checkpoint of integrity measurement (CPIM) arithmetic. The CPIM arithmetic could control process's state when process encounters an integrity measurement checkpoint, which would solve the problem that the running state of parallel software is indeterminate. The virtue of CPIM arithmetic is simple and low-cost. We also provide implementation scheme and prototype for evaluating overhead and performance. ©2010 IEEE.

Today's business applications are increasingly process driven, meaning that the main application logic is executed by a dedicate process engine. In addition, component-oriented software development has been attracting attention for building complex distributed applications. In this paper we present the experiences gained from building a process-driven biometric identification application which makes use of Grid infrastructures via the Grid Component Model (GCM). GCM, besides guaranteeing access to Grid resources, supports autonomic management of notable parallel composite components. This feature is exploited within our biometric identification application to ensure real time identification of fingerprints. Therefore, we briefly introduce the GCM framework and the process engine used, and we describe the implementation of the application using autonomic GCM components. Finally, we summarize the results, experiences, and lessons learned focusing on the integration of autonomic GCM components and the process-driven approach.

Along with the rapid development of parallel computing technology and the popularity of Beowulf cluster system, the scalability of parallel algorithm-machine combinations, which measures the capacity of a parallel algorithm to effectively utilize an increasing number of processors, becomes more and more important. This ratio of parallel overhead to computation is reviewed in this paper, the merit and deficiencies of this metric are pointed out. Then in order to apply the distributed parallel computation environment based on Beowulf cluster it is improved, obtain the new extensible function which reflects the scalability of distributed parallel systems more directly and precisely when the size of machines and the scale of problems are extending in the environment of Beowulf cluster. Finally, the new metric is used to analyze and prove the scalability of parallel algorithms and Beowulf cluster.

distributed hybrid testing is a natural extension to and builds upon the local hybrid testing technique. Taking advantage of the hybrid nature of the test, it allows a sharing of resources and expertise between researchers from different disciplines by connecting multiple geographically distributed sites for joint testing. As part of the UK-NEES project, a successful series of three-site distributed hybrid tests have been carried out between Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford Universities. The first known multi-site distributed hybrid tests in the UK, they connected via a dedicated fibre network, using custom software, the geotechnical centrifuge at Cambridge to structural components at Bristol and Oxford. These experiments were to prove the connection and useful insights were gained into the issues involved with this distributed environment. A wider aim is towards providing a flexible testing framework to facilitate multi-disciplinary experiments such as the accurate investigation of the influence of foundations on structural systems under seismic and other loading. Time scaling incompatibilities mean true seismic soil structure interaction using a centrifuge at g is not possible, though it is clear that distributed centrifuge testing can be valuable in other problems. Development is continuing to overcome the issues encountered, in order to improve future distributed tests in the UK and beyond.

GPUs are many-core processors with tremendous computational power. However, as automatic parallelization has not been realized yet, developing high-performance parallel code for GPUs is still very challenging. The paper presents a novel translation framework designed for virtual execution environment based on CPU/GPU architecture. It addresses two major challenges of taking advantage of general purpose computation on graphics processing units (GPGPU) to improve performance: no rewriting the existing source code and resolving binary compatibility issues between different GPUs. The translation framework uses semi-automatic parallelization technology to port existing code to explicitly parallel programming models. It not only offers a mapping strategy from X86 platform to CUDA programming model, but also synchronizes the execution between the CPU and the GPUs. The input to our translation framework is parallelizable part of the program within binary code. With an additional information related to the parallelizable part, the translation framework transforms the sequential code into PTX code and execute it on GPUs. Experimental results on several programs from CUDA SDK Code Samples and Parboil Benchmark Suite show that our translation framework could achieve very high performance, even up to several tens of times speedup over the X86 native version. © 2010 IEEE.

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been used widely for large scale applications, reaching entire continents. Within the EU funded EnviroGrids project, a detailed application of SWAT on the Black Sea Basin is envisaged using high resolution data. In order to support the computation, the model is run on a computer grid. The use of the SWAT allowed for such computations with little adaptations to the source. A 3-step procedure is needed. In the first step, a program is run in order to split the model into several sub-models. Afterwards, the sub-models are run in parallel. In a last step, the outputs of the sub-basins are collected at a central computer and the routing is performed. High computations are also needed when simulations have to be repeated, such as for sensitivity, calibration and uncertainty analysis. In these cases, the simulations are repeated for different parameter sets. In this paper, we discuss the gridification of the algorithm "LH-OAT" that performs sensitivity analysis and has been linked to the SWAT model. The results show a clear improvement in calculation time. Nevertheless, it is concluded that the parallel computing of a distributed model is mainly beneficial for large scale applications with high resolution, while running the sensitivity analysis algorithm has more general and obvious benefit. In a next step, the gridification will be optimised depending on the application and the overheads that are due to submission and receiving of files, as well as potential waiting times for executions on the grid.

distributed computational infrastructures, as well as the applications and services that they support, are increasingly becoming an integral part of society and affecting every aspect of life. As a result, ensuring their efficient and robust operation is critical. However, the scale and overall complexity of these systems is growing at an alarming rate (current data centers contain tens to hundreds of thousands of computing and storage devices running complex applications), making the management of these systems extremely challenging and rapidly exceeding human capability. Furthermore, these systems require simultaneous management along multiple dimensions, including performance, quality of service, power, and reliability.
