High-performance parallel programs that efficiently utilize heterogeneous CPU+GPU accelerator systems require tuned coordination among multiple program units. However, using current programming frameworks such as CUDA leads to tangled source code that combines code for the core computation with that for device and computational kernel management, data transfers between memory spaces, and various optimizations. In this paper, we propose a programming system based on the principles of Aspect-Oriented Programming, to un-clutter the code and to improve programmability of these heterogeneous parallel systems. Specifically, we use standard C++ to describe the core computations and aspects to encapsulate all other support parts. An aspect-weaving compiler is then used to combine these two pieces of code to generate a final program. The system modularizes concerns that are hard to manage using conventional programming frameworks such as CUDA, has a small impact on existing program structure as well as performance, and as a result, simplifies the programming of accelerator-based heterogeneous parallel systems. We also present an options pricing and an n-body simulation example program to demonstrate that programs written using this system can be successfully translated to CUDA programs for NVIDIA GPU hardware and to OpenCL programs for multicore CPUs with comparable performance. For both examples, the performance of the translated code achieved ~80% of the hand-coded CUDA programs.

The size and complexity of large-scale distributed embedded systems such as automotive and process controls have increased recently. Sophisticated systems that are safe and environmentally friendly require numerous types of sensor data, which are collected from various devices and sent to computers through networks. To develop such large-scale distributed embedded systems with high quality and productivity, we have developed a virtual execution environment platform. This platform integrates numerous CPU simulators and various device simulators through the network and provides network-wide simulation functionalities. In this paper, we propose a hybrid software execution environment and describe the development and evaluation of the technology element required in its implementation. The hybrid software execution environment integrates virtual and real software execution environments in order to check functional behavior of distributed embedded software in a more realistic environment. In the environment, CPU simulators and device simulators are implemented as Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) objects, and messages in the simulation objects are transferred at the actual rate in the target setting.

We consider the problem of energy-aware joint scheduling of tasks and messages with real-time constraints in wireless networked embedded systems specifically wireless sensor networks. We use the mixed tree coloring approach in order to model the constraints and show that k-coloring of a mixed tree can be mapped to a non-conflicting schedule consisting of k time slots. Also, we propose to conduct testbed evaluation to quantify the performance of combined implementation of energy management techniques such as Dynamic Modulation Scaling (DMS) along with Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS).

A graph G is called k-fault Hamiltonian (resp. Hamiltonian-connected) if after deleting at most k vertices and/or edges from G, the resulting graph remains Hamiltonian (resp. Hamiltonian-connected). Let δ(G) be the minimum degree of G. Given a (δ(G) - 2)-fault Hamiltonian/ (δ(G) - 3)-fault Hamiltonian-connected graph G and a (δ(H) - 2)-fault Hamiltonian/(δ(H) - 3)-fault Hamiltonian-connected graph H, we show that the Cartesian product network G × H is (δ(G) + δ(H) - 2)-fault Hamiltonian and (δ(G)+δ(H) - 3)-fault Hamiltonian-connected. We then apply our result to determine the fault-tolerant hamiltonicity and Hamiltonian-connectivity of two multiprocessor systems, namely the generalized hypercube and the nearest neighbor mesh hypercube, both of which belong to Cartesian product networks. We also demonstrate that our results are worst-case optimal with respect to the number of faults tolerated.

The memory hierarchy of most multicore systems contains one or more levels of cache that is shared among multiple cores. The shared-cache architecture presents many opportunities for performance gains for multi-threaded applications. However, when not handled carefully, contention for the shared-cache can lead to performance degradation. This paper addresses the issue of cache interference that occurs when concurrent threads access data that reside on a shared cache block. We propose a new compiler technique that takes advantage of hardware prefetching and thread affinity features to ameliorate performance loss due to this type of interference. Preliminary evaluation on a dual-core and a quad-core platform shows that our strategy can be effective in reducing cache interference for multi-threaded applications that exhibit inter-core spatial locality.

Collaboration is a key factor in successful knowledge management. Recently, wikis have become a popular solution for distributed and collaborative knowledge management. However, most wikis do not appropriately support the facilities needed for group idea creation and can only represent unstructured knowledge (text, images, and hyperlinks) which cannot be reused or systematized. This paper proposes the use of a Spatial Hypertext Wiki (ShyWiki) as a knowledge management wiki which allows users to interact in a distributed and collaborative way in order to generate ideas, and organize and structure knowledge. This type of wiki can help in the externalization of tacit knowledge, and is able to represent explicit knowledge at different levels of formality. Furthermore, the visual and spatial characteristics of this wiki can be used for representing implicit relations among concepts as well as for organizing and visualizing knowledge.

The choice of an appropriate interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism is critical to the performance of distributed systems and parallel programs. There is however a trade-off between the accrued system performance and the imposed cost of the deployed IPC mechanism. Message passing (MP) and distributed shared memory (DSM) mechanisms have been extensively studied and compared, but the state of the art work on formulating the cost of DSM is not comprehensive. In this paper we distinguish between DSM-inherent and application-specific parameters that contribute most to the real cost of DSM, and focus on DSM-inherent parameters in high performance computing (HPC) clusters. The weights of each parameter's effectiveness on the cost, as well as the weights of their influence on each other are determined. The derived formula for the real cost of DSM is then calibrated by a clustering coefficient that varies with different sizes of clusters. We have used the principles of management and accounting sciences in calculating the real cost of DSM.

Test suite reduction can greatly save the test effort during regression testing. For software development with frequent minor updates, a good policy is to managing selective form regression testing, where the total set of test requirements is divided into two subsets: one is the set of concerned test requirements which ought to be covered by selected regression test cases; the other is the set of irrelevant test requirements which should be avoided to save the test case execution and analysis effort, enable missing parts and stubs, or avoid failure protecting codes. We define the multi-objective test suite reduction to model the selective coverage test suite reduction problem, and put forward the HATS algorithm to solve it. Within the HATS, the weighting factor α is defined to balance the two selecting criteria for each test case: maximizing the number of concerned requirements covered, or minimizing the number of irrelevant requirements involved. Experimental results show that compared with the total-coverage test suite reduction techniques, with proper settings of α, the HATS can further decrease the size of the regression test bucket, and cut down the coverage of irrelevant test requirements, while only slightly compromise the fault detection capability against the set of concerned test requirements.

Workflow scheduling in Grids becomes an important area as it allows users to process large scale problems in an atomic way. However, validating the performance of workflow scheduling strategies in real production environment cannot be feasibly carried out. The complexity of production systems, dynamicity of Grid execution environments, and the difficulty to reproduce experiments, make workflow scheduling production systems a complex research environment. Instead, this work is based on a trace driven simulator. This work presents workflow scheduling support as an extension to the Teikoku Grid Scheduling Framework (tGSF). tGSF was developed as a response for a standard compliant and trace based Grid scheduling simulation environment. Workflow scheduling is provided via a second layer of Grid scheduler, extensible to new workflow and parallel scheduling strategies. This work also includes a usage case scenario, which illustrates how this extension can be used for quantitative experimental study.
