Over the last 2-3 years, the importance of data-intensive computing has increasingly been recognized, closely coupled with the emergence and popularity of map-reduce for developing this class of applications. Besides programmability and ease of parallelization, fault tolerance is clearly important for data-intensive applications, because of their long running nature, and because of the potential for using a large number of nodes for processing massive amounts of data. Fault-tolerance has been an important attribute of map-reduce as well in its Hadoop implementation, where it is based on replication of data in the file system. Two important goals in supporting fault-tolerance are low overheads and efficient recovery. With these goals, this paper describes a different approach for enabling data-intensive computing with fault-tolerance. Our approach is based on an API for developing data-intensive computations that is a variation of map-reduce, and it involves an explicit programmer-declared reduction object. We show how more efficient fault-tolerance support can be developed using this API. Particularly, as the reduction object represents the state of the computation on a node, we can periodically cache the reduction object from every node at another location and use it to support failure-recovery. We have extensively evaluated our approach using two data-intensive applications. Our results show that the overheads of our scheme are extremely low, and our system outperforms Hadoop both in absence and presence of failures.

Document clustering plays an important role in data mining systems. Recently, a flocking-based document clustering algorithm has been proposed to solve the problem through simulation resembling the flocking behavior of birds in nature. This method is superior to other clustering algorithms, including k-means, in the sense that the outcome is not sensitive to the initial state. One limitation of this approach is that the algorithmic complexity is inherently quadratic in the number of documents. As a result, execution time becomes a bottleneck with large number of documents. In this paper, we assess the benefits of exploiting the computational power of Beowulf-like clusters equipped with contemporary Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) as a means to significantly reduce the runtime of flocking-based document clustering. Our framework scales up to over one million documents processed simultaneously in a sixteen-node moderate GPU cluster. Results are also compared to a four-node cluster with higher-end GPUs. On these clusters, we observe 30X-50X speedups, which demonstrate the potential of GPU clusters to efficiently solve massive data mining problems. Such speedups combined with the scalability potential and accelerator-based parallelization are unique in the domain of document-based data mining, to the best of our knowledge.

Power electronic converters used in distributed power generation systems need grid synchronization systems. These synchronization methods can be divided into two fundamental parts. Whereas the first part proposes detecting grid signal sequences and harmonics, the second one is based on a PLL (Phase Locked Loop). DSC (Delay Signal Cancellation) y DSOGI-QSG (Dual Second Order Generalized Integrator-Quadrature Signal Generator) techniques are proposed in the first block. In the most of the cases, these types of algorithms are implemented by means of software in microprocessors or DSPs (Digital Signal Processors). In this paper, they are implemented on an FPGA. Thus, important advantages are achieved, like the increment of the input signals and control algorithm sample rate, parallel execution of different algorithms in order to get some information about magnitude, frequency and phase of different harmonics, etc.

The large scale and dynamic nature of a distributed system makes it difficult to collect the attributes of the individual nodes in the network. In these systems, often an aggregate (e.g. AVG, COUNT, MIN, MAX, SUM etc) of these attributes is adequate. Epidemic-style protocols are one of the popular approaches to estimate aggregates in such systems. In existing epidemic-style aggregation protocols the accuracy of the estimated aggregate at local nodes heavily depends upon synchronization of aggregation rounds. To enforce synchronization in these protocols, length of aggregation round should be long enough so that all the nodes in the system complete their aggregation information exchange. In this paper, we study the impacts of asynchrony in epidemic-style aggregation protocols. We present a simple asynchronous technique to estimate system aggregates in a distributed system. Based upon this technique, we analyze two popular existing epidemic-style aggregation protocols, Push-Pull and Push-Sum. Through detailed simulations, we evaluate accuracy and cost of asynchronous version of these protocols. We found that to obtain an estimate of the true system aggregate, aggregation protocols do not need to be synchronized and hence an efficient estimate can be obtained in lesser time.

The main objective of this paper is to report and present design and implementation of a 12 kW solar-wind hybrid power station and associated wireless sensors and LabView based monitoring instrumentation systems to provide a teaching and research facility on renewable energy areas for students and faculty members in Electrical engineering Technology (EET) programs at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). This new ongoing project requires to purchase a 10 kW Bergey Excel-S wind turbine with a Power Sink II utility intertie module (208 V/240V AC, 60 Hz), eight BP SX175B 175W solar PhotoVoltaic (PV) panels, and related power and instrumentation/data acquisition hardware. A 100 ft long wind tower to house the new wind turbine is available at UNI campus. Furthermore, the electricity generated by this power station will be used as a renewable energy input for a smart grid based green house educational demonstration project to aid the teaching and research on smart grid and energy efficiency issues. 330:038 Introduction to Electrical Power/Machinery, 330:166 Adv Electrical Power systems, 330:059/159 Wind Energy Applications in Iowa, 330:059/159 (2) Solar Energy Applications and Issues, and 330:186 Wind Energy Management are the classes that will use this proposed testbed. Previous workshops organized by UNI Continuing and Distance Education have been very successful. The hybrid unit contains two complete generating plants, a wind-turbine system and a PV solar-cell plant. These sources are connected and synchronized in parallel to the UNI power grid as part of laboratory activities on wind-solar hybrid power systems and grid-tie interactions. A dramatic phenomenon has been occurring in Devils Lake, a terminal lake in North Dakota: its inundated area has continually expanded since reaching its extreme low in the 1940s. Devils Lake's continual rise in water level has created immediate hardships for local residents, particularly farmers who have lost large parcels of productive land and properties. The search for solutions to the problems caused by the unique lake flooding has motivated our modeling of the lake basin's hydrology, the lake processes, and climatic change impacts. A distributed rainfall runoff model, HEC-HMS, has been calibrated for several major sub-basins that drain into the lake. A significant challenge has been the implementation of Arc-Hydro within ArcGIS for a basin with relatively flat terrain (using the best available DEM of the region) which has undergone a lot of land-use changes in the past century. Further complexities in modeling are introduced by a pumped-drainage scheme implemented by the state's water commission to lower the lake level by pumping and draining into an adjacent stream. The scheme operates whenever the stream's water quality is favorable. A reservoir simulation model, HEC-ResSim, which is coupled with the HEC-HMS model, is calibrated for the lake for a short period of time. For the model calibration, NASA's remote sensing data, including the TRMM Multi-Satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) data, are used to supplement the limited ground data. The coupled, calibrated hydrologic-reservoir model allows a series of comprehensive climatic-scenario simulations to be carried out, a key feature of which is the use of future regional climatic conditions derived from GCM down-scaled ensembles. The described modeling is expected to yield useful and usable results for planners and decision makers who set long-term sustainability plans for the Devils Lake region.

Grid and P2P systems have achieved a notable success in the domain of scientific and engineering applications, which commonly demand considerable amounts of computational resources. However, Grid and P2P systems remain still difficult to be used by the domain scientists and engineers due to the inherent complexity of the corresponding middleware and the lack of adequate documentation. In this paper we survey recent developments of Grid and P2P middleware in the context of scientific computing systems. The differences on the approaches taken for Grid and P2P middleware as well as the common points of both paradigms are highlighted. In addition, we discuss the corresponding programming models, languages, and applications.

ID shadow-maps are used for robust real-time rendering of shadows. The primary disadvantage of using shadow-maps is their excessive size for large scenes in case high quality shadows are needed. To eliminate large memory requirements and texture-size limitations of the current generation GPUs, texture compression is an important tool. We present a framework where compressed ID-shadow-maps are used for real-time rendering of static scene shadows. The texture compression is performed off-line on the CPU and real-time decompression is performed on the GPU within a fragment-shader for shadowing the pixels. The use of ID shadow-maps (instead of conventional depth-based shadow-maps) is the key to high compression ratios. The ID shadow-map is compressed on the CPU by first partitioning it into blocks. Each compressed block is packed densely into a global array, while a pointer table is constructed that holds a pointer to the start of every compressed block in the global array. This data organization provides the GPU with a random access to the start of each compressed block thus enables fast parallel decompression. The proposed decompression shader-program and the underlying data structures can be applied to any type of array consisting of integers. The framework is implemented using OpenGL and GLSL.

Realizing the software based on MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), with which MIDI instruments geographically distributed over Internet could be real-time played or synthetic performed. By access local MIDI input instruments to obtain signals, the software can help access local MIDI input instruments to implement local play. At the same time it can also obtain MIDI message in real-time and send signals through the Internet, synthesizing at a remote terminal to implement remote interactive performance. We use input buffer on a remote synthetic server to resolve the issue of network transmission delay.
