The number of embedded systems in our daily lives that are distributed, hidden, and ubiquitous continues to increase. Many of them are safety-critical. To provide additional or better functionalities, they are becoming more and more complex, which makes it difficult to guarantee safety. It is undisputed that safety must be considered before the start of development, continue until decommissioning, and is particularly important during the design of the system and software architecture. An architecture must be able to avoid, detect, or mitigate all dangerous failures to a sufficient degree. For this purpose, the architectural design must be guided and verified by safety analyses. However, state-of-the-art component-oriented or model-based architectural design approaches use different levels of abstraction to handle complexity. So, safety analyses must also be applied on different levels of abstraction, and it must be checked and guaranteed that they are consistent with each other, which is not supported by standard safety analyses. In this paper, we present a consistency check for CFTs that automatically detects commonalities and inconsistencies between fault trees of different levels of abstraction. This facilitates the application of safety analyses in top-down architectural designs and reduces effort.

In WiMAX network, service flows with different priorities are defined. The priority of real time traffic is higher than that of non real time traffic. As bandwidth is limited, the resource must be allocated in advance to guarantee the delay time of real time traffic in WiMAX network. For this, the proposed algorithm must respond quickly to the sudden shortage of resource. In this paper, we will propose a Bandwidth Control Protocol (BCP). This algorithm evolves from the traditional bandwidth allocation protocol. When the bandwidth assigned to the real time traffic in advance is insufficient, it should be increased in following frames. With this, the bandwidth allocated to the non real time traffic must be reduced accordingly. In this way, the assigned bandwidth can be adapted to the real load of real time traffic. Also, the belonging bandwidth for non real time traffic can be borrowed by real time traffic if the load of real time traffic is fluctuated. The borrowed bandwidth will not be returned unless the allocated resource to the real time traffic is enough. With this mechanism, the delay time of real time traffic will be reduced effectively. Also, the bandwidth will be allocated more correctly.

Resisting spam in tagging system is very challenging. This paper presents DSpam, a novel spam-resistant tagging system which can significantly diminish spam in tag search results with users' reliabilities. DSpam client groups other users into unfamiliar users and interacted users according to the fact whether the client has interacted with such users. For an unfamiliar user, the client computes his reliability by tagging behavior-based mechanism which reflects correlation of annotations between them. For an interacted user, the reliability includes two parts: feedback-based reliability, which indicates direct interactions between that user and the client, and recommendation reliability, which indicates the evaluation about that user from the client's friends. The client ranks search result with the average reliabilities of himself with respect to annotators of each result. Experimental results show DSpam can effectively resist tag spam and work better than existing tag search schemes.

Network Virtualization has recently emerged to provide scalable, customized and on-demand virtual network services over a shared substrate network. How to provide VN services with resiliency guarantees against network failures has become a critical issue, meanwhile the service resource usages should be minimized under the strict constraints such as link bandwidth capability and service resiliency guarantees etc. In this paper, we present a resource allocation algorithm to balance the tradeoff between service resource consumptions and service resiliency. By exploiting a heuristic VN mapping scheme and a restoration path selection scheme based on intelligent bandwidth sharing, the algorithm simultaneously makes cost-effective usage of network resources and protects VN services against network failures. We perform evaluations and find that the algorithm is near optimal in terms of network resource usage, especially the additional restoration bandwidth cost for resiliency protection.

We demonstrate the application of a Model-Driven software Development (MDSD) methodology using the example of an analysis framework designed for a data logging device in the field of vehicle testing. This mobile device is capable of recording the data traffic of automotive-specific bus systems like Controller Area Network (CAN), Local Interconnect Network (LIN), FlexRay and Media Orientied systems Transport (MOST) in real-time. In order to accelerate the subsequent analysis of the tremendous amount of data, it is advisable to pre-filter the recorded log data on device, during the test-drive. To enable the test engineer of creating data analyses we built a component-based library on top of the languages System{C}/C++. Problematic with this approach is that still substantial programming knowledge is required for implementing filter algorithms, which is usually not the domain of a vehicle test engineer. In a next step we developed a graphical modelling language on top of our library and a graphical editor. The editor is able of verifying a model as well as of generating source code which eliminates the need of manually implementing a filter algorithm. In our contribution we show the design of the graphical language and the editor using the Eclipse platform and the Graphical Modelling Framework (GMF). We describe the automatic extraction of meta-information, such as available components, their interfaces and categorization annotations by parsing the library's C++ implementation with the help of Xtext. The editor will use that information to build a dedicated tool palette providing components that the designer can instantiate and interconnect using drag-and-drop.

There is building interest in using FPGAs as accelerators for high-performance computing, but existing systems for programming them are so far inadequate. In this paper we propose a soft processor programming model and architecture inspired by graphics processing units (GPUs) that are well-matched to the strengths of FPGAs, namely highly-parallel and pipelinable computation. In particular, our soft processor architecture exploits multithreading and vector operations to supply a floating-point pipeline of 64 stages via hardware support for up to 256 concurrent thread contexts. The key new contributions of our architecture are mechanisms for managing threads and register files that maximize data-level and instruction-level parallelism while overcoming the challenges of port limitations of FPGA block memories, as well as memory and pipeline latency. Through simulation of a system that (i) supports AMD's CTM r5xx GPU ISA , and (ii) is realizable on an XtremeData XD1000 FPGA-based accelerator system, we demonstrate that our soft processor can achieve 100% utilization of the deeply-pipelined floating-point datapath.

It is widely believed that most Recognition and Mining (RM) workloads can easily take advantage of parallel computing platforms because these workloads are dataparallel. Contrary to this popular belief, we present RM workloads for which conventional parallel implementations scale poorly on multi-core platforms. We identify off-chip memory transfers and overheads in the parallel runtime library as the primary bottlenecks that limit speedups to be well below the ideal linear speedup expected for data-parallel workloads. To achieve improved parallel scalability, we identify and exploit several interesting properties of RM workloads - sparsity of model updates, low spatial locality among model updates, presence of insignificant computations, and the inherently self-healing nature of these algorithms in the presence of errors. We leverage these domain-specific characteristics to improve parallel scalability in two major ways. First, we utilize data dependency relaxation to simultaneously execute multiple training iterations in parallel, thereby increasing the granularity of the parallel tasks and significantly lowering the run-time overheads of fine-grained threading. Second, we strategically drop selected computations that are insignificant to the accuracy of the final result, but account for a disproportionately large amount of off-chip (memory and coherence) traffic. Through the application of the proposed techniques, we show that much higher speedups are possible on multi-core platforms for two important RM applications - document search using semantic indexing, and eye detection in images using generalized learning vector quantization. On an 8-core platform, we achieve application speedups of 5.5X and 7.3X compared to sequential implementations. Compared to conventional parallel implementations of these applications using Intel's TBB, the proposed techniques result in 4.3X and 4.9X improvements. Packing (or executable compression) is considered as one of the most effective anti-reverse engineering methods in the Microsoft Windows environment. Even though many reversing attacks are widely conducted in the Linux-based embedded system there is no widely used secure binary code packing tools for Linux. This paper presents two secure packing methods that use AES encryption and the UPX packer to protect the intellectual property (IP) of software from reverse engineering attacks on Linux-based embedded system. We call these methods: secure UPX and AES-encryption packing. Since the original UPX system is designed not for software protection but for code compression, we present two anti-debugging methods in the unpacking module of the secure UPX to detect or abort reverse engineering attacks. Furthermore, since embedded systems are highly resource constrained, minimizing unpacking overhead is important. Therefore, we analyze the performance of the two packing methods from the perspective of: (i) code size, (ii) execution time, and (iii) power consumption. Our analysis results show that the Secure UPX performs better than AES-encryption packing in terms of the code size, execution time, and power consumption.

Service Level Agreements (SLAs) play an important role in guaranteeing successful collaborations among autonomous entities in Internet-based Virtual Computing Environment (iVCE). However, traditional static and predefined SLAs are not suitable for the open and dynamic iVCE. This paper proposes a policy-based framework for supporting dynamic and automated SLA negotiations between autonomous entities in iVCE. Requirements or constraints on SLA attributes as well as negotiation strategies of negotiating parties are both specified in policy specifications using a simple but expressive policy language that extends the WS-Policy framework. According to these policies, a negotiation agent will be dynamically created for each negotiation party, which is responsible for SLA negotiations on behalf of its owner party. We have implemented a prototype of our framework and demonstrated our approach through a case study.
