distributed embedded systems usually have strict quality requirements which need to be verified, and the allocation of software to hardware needs to be considered throughout the whole development process. In this paper, we present usage of simulation in analyzing development process of embedded systems using CARMA principle which combines two paradigms - Component-Based software engineering and Model Driven Development. In development process two types of parallel modeling of hardware are distinguished: modeling of a virtual hardware structure and of the physical structure. Two kinds of verification activities are introduced: milestone verification, which integrates the product requirements into the process through frequent analyses and measurements of the development artifacts, and exploratory analysis, which is informal and carried out by individual developers, similar to debugging. Based on the process model, we have constructed a queuing network model, used for simulations to further explore the characteristics of the development model. Initial simulations give by hand that by increasing the amount of analysis and verification in a project, more errors are found with the same amount of effort and time. There are also dependencies on project risks and the strength of the analysis tool support.

This paper studies on the design of planar bus bar in the high-power converter. Firstly, the impedance characteristic of planar bus bar and the performance of EMI are analyzed. The design of planar bus bar is restricted by the spatial layout for physical devices. The traditional design method, the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC), is based on the assumption that the current was uniformly distribution, and the structure was symmetry. So it is hard to get a good result. Here, the finite elements method (FEM) which is based on the Maxwell equations, is adopted for planar bus bar design. According to the planar bus bar design, the boundary term is confirmed, so we can solve the undulation equations. Several designs for an H bridge are shown in this paper, which is constituted by IGBT modules. The ANSYS results show us the distribution of the current and the magnetic field, and works out the planar bus bar inductance value. Through the comparison and optimization of the designs, we can get a final result. The experiment shows that it is a superior method.

This paper proposes a fast reconfiguration algorithm for the two-dimensional degradable mesh-connected processor arrays. The proposed algorithm simplifies a dynamic programming approach to construct logical columns. For each processing element lying in the logical columns, the calculation is reduced from five operations (one assignment, two additions and two comparisons) that are taken in the state-of-the-art to single assignment operation in most cases, or three operations (one assignment, one comparison and one addition) in worst case. Simulation results based on same benchmarks utilized in the state-of-the-art show that, the simplified algorithm runs faster by 28%, without loss of harvest. Moreover, the increase of the total interconnection length of the target array is acceptable.

Cloud computing is gaining momentum in part because it enables a distributed systems infrastructure that offers more advantages than traditional ones. This session is the fourth in a series of special events held at WSE focused on selected aspects of research directions in Web systems evolution, and the second session focused on issues related to migrating Web applications to the cloud.

The dynamics of peer participation, or churn, is critical for design, implementation and evaluation of Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems. The metrics used to characterize the churn is distributions of the node session lengths and arrival intervals. The prior studies setup the model by measuring the historical logs or records, and treat the churn as one whole black-box without understanding the inside of peer's population. We investigate churn in another point of view, and find that modeling it based on the global geographical distribution of peer nodes will result in a system which behave in the way compliant to the measurement taken by previous works. By this model, we do see some more future things than other models. We might expect or predict when and what nodes would return back, as well as when and what nodes would disappear at high possibility. So it is useful when designing a system optimized both to the pass and the future, which could reduce the overhead of the maintenance of underlying overlay network of DHTs and lower the redundant level of replications for P2P storage system.

Quantum chemistry applications such as the General Atomic and Molecular Electronic Structure System (GAMESS) that can execute on a complex peta-scale parallel computing environment has a large number of input parameters that affect the overall performance. The application characteristics vary according to the input parameters. This is due to the difference in the usage of resources like network bandwidth, I/O and main memory, according to the input parameters. Effective execution of applications in a parallel computing environment that share such resources require some sort of adaptive mechanism to enable efficient usage of these resources. In our previous work, we have integrated GAMESS with an adaptive middleware NICAN (Network Information Conveyer and Application Notification) for dynamic adaptations during heavy load conditions that modify execution of GAMESS computations on a per-iteration basis. This leads to better application performance. In this research, we have expanded the structure of NICAN in order to include other input parameters based on which application performance can be controlled. The application performance has been analyzed on different architectures and a tuning strategy has been identified. A generic database framework has been incorporated in the existing NICAN mechanism so as to aid this tuning strategy.

Highly desirable types of networked multimedia applications should adapt to changes in the environmental conditions in which they operate, such as communication bandwidth, available memory, and battery lifetime, while providing the best possible quality of service (QoS). In this paper we present a software architecture that facilitates the development of adaptive networked multimedia applications which meet this requirement. The proposed software architecture is based on the Time-triggered Message-triggered Object (TMO) programming scheme and it is implemented as a thin layer on top of the TMO Support Middleware (TMOSM). The new layer, called the QoS Adaptation Support Layer (QASL), includes monitoring and runtime reconfiguration facilities that allow us to easily incorporate QoS-adaptation capabilities into TMO-based multimedia applications. In addition, we introduce a novel, practical approach for establishing the QoS configurations that guide the adaptive behavior of a networked multimedia application. A QoS configuration contains a set of parameters that specify the quality-related characteristics of the media streams which a receiver expects from a sender. We also present a strategy used in QASL for selecting, from a given set of QoS configurations, an optimal configuration by reflecting currently observed environmental conditions. Finally, the effectiveness of the QoS-adaptation mechanisms implemented in QASL is evaluated with the use of a heterogeneous network based multi-party videoconference application.

Performance problems, which can stem from different system components, such as network, memory, and storage devices, are difficult to diagnose and isolate in a cluster file system. In this paper, we present an online performance anomaly detector which is able to efficiently detect performance anomaly and accurately identify the faulty sources in a system node of a cluster file system. Our method exploits the stable relationship between workloads and system resource statistics to detect the performance anomaly and identify faulty sources which cause the performance anomaly in the system. Our preliminary experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed performance anomaly detector.

Previous studies have reported that common dense linear algebra operations do not achieve speed up by using multiple geographical sites of a computational grid. Because such operations are the building blocks of most scientific applications, conventional supercomputers are still strongly predominant in high-performance computing and the use of grids for speeding up large-scale scientific problems is limited to applications exhibiting parallelism at a higher level. We have identified two performance bottlenecks in the distributed memory algorithms implemented in ScaLAPACK, a state-of-the-art dense linear algebra library. First, because ScaLA-PACK assumes a homogeneous communication network, the implementations of ScaLAPACK algorithms lack locality in their communication pattern. Second, the number of messages sent in the ScaLAPACK algorithms is significantly greater than other algorithms that trade flops for communication. In this paper, we present a new approach for computing a QR factorization - one of the main dense linear algebra kernels - of tall and skinny matrices in a grid computing environment that overcomes these two bottlenecks. Our contribution is to articulate a recently proposed algorithm (Communication Avoiding QR) with a topology-aware middleware (QCG-OMPI) in order to confine intensive communications (ScaLAPACK calls) within the different geographical sites. An experimental study conducted on the Grid'5000 platform shows that the resulting performance increases linearly with the number of geographical sites on large-scale problems (and is in particular consistently higher than ScaLAPACK's).

Objectives of the dissertation are impacts of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic on Internet core networks as well as novel approaches for using P2P technology in Internet access networks. Thereby, challenges of P2P computing concerning topology awareness, scalability, and fault-tolerance are analyzed. The thesis' first part focuses on improving insufficient scalability and fault-tolerance properties of present-day Internet services like the Domain Name System (DNS) by using available resources in access networks. The second part addresses P2P mechanisms for a highly scalable, resilient, and distributed storing and computing solution in the access network. Finally, a new algorithm for allowing topology awareness in P2P networks is proposed. For evaluation, a prototype for a P2P-based DNS has been developed and another prototype for a P2P-based store and compute platform is currently set up.
