With the continued increase in the amount of big data generated and stored in various application domains, such as high-frequency trading, compression techniques are becoming ever more important to reduce the requirements on communication bandwidth and storage capacity. Zstandard (Zstd) is emerging as an important compression algorithm for big data sets capable of achieving a good compression ratio but with a higher speed than comparable algorithms. In this paper, we introduce the architecture of a new hardware compression kernel for Zstd that allows the algorithm to be used for real-time compression of big data streams. In addition, we optimize the proposed architecture for the specific use case of streaming high-frequency trading data. The optimized kernel is implemented on a Xilinx Alveo U200 board. Our optimized implementation allows us to fit ten kernel blocks on one board, which is able to achieve a compression throughput of about 8.6GB/s and compression ratio of about 23.6%. The hardware implementation is open source and publicly available at https://***/ChenJianyunp/Hardware-Zstd-Compression-Unit.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel Network Function Virtualization (NFV) platform, NFVDC, specifically for dynamic service chaining. Unlike traditional service chaining methods, NFVDC supports real-time, reconfigurable service chains that accommodate service functions dynamically joining or leaving the chain. By integrating an advanced traffic steering method, optimized CPU scheduling, and a causal message-passing mechanism, NFVDC addresses challenges in deploying dynamic service chaining, such as traffic steering, resource scheduling, and session state management. Our evaluation demonstrates that NFVDC’s forwarding performance nearly doubles compared to existing solutions when extending service chain lengths to six.

Railway infrastructure plays a vital role in modern transportation systems, facilitating the efficient movement of people and goods. However, the integrity and performance of railroad structures are subject to various external forces and aging processes, which necessitate continuous monitoring to ensure safety and operational efficiency. This research focused on the structural health monitoring of the railroad using distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data collected from a High Tonnage Loop (HTL). An investigation on applying a deep learning model, long-shot-term memory (LSTM), and gated recurrent Unit(GRU) is presented to identify and classify railroad conditions.

Vulnerabilities in software and distributed systems are increasing, and system security becomes a challenge for developers. Giving a quick vulnerability classification for newly discovered vulnerabilities is helpful for developers to quickly analyze the vulnerabilities and complete the vulnerability fix. Therefore, Res-CNN-BiTLSTM is proposed for vulnerability classification in this paper. The model consists of Text Convolutional Neural Network (TextCNN), Bidirectional improved gating mechanism (BiTLSTM) and residual blocks. Firstly, TextCNN is employed to capture local features from vulnerability description information, according to different convolutional kernel sizes. Secondly, an improved gating mechanism (TLSTM) is constructed to enhance the expressive power of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). BiTLSTM is employed to extract long-text features of vulnerability descriptions through both forward and backward directions. Thirdly, the residual block is used for enhancing and fusing the local features with the long text features to retain important text features. Finally, a fully connected layer is employed to classify vulnerabilities. The results show that Res-CNN-BiTLSTM has the highest macro precision (MacroP), macro recall (MacroR), and macro F1 (MacroF1) on National Vulnerability Database (NVD) dataset. It has a high prediction precision on CWE-352 and CWE-416. The performance of Res-CNN-BiTLSTM is better than the other comparative models. It is effective for vulnerability automatic classification. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of each part of the model is proved by ablation experiments.

This study proposes a novel neural network architecture, CRegretNet, for designing revenue-maximizing mechanisms in multi-item auctions. CRegretNet incorporates concepts from exchangeable matrix mechanisms and permutation-equivariant neural networks to ensure fairness and scalability. By minimizing bidders' regret, CRegretNet encourages truthful bidding, which leads to efficient auction outcomes. We evaluate the performance of CRegretNet against multiple strong baselines in multiple experiments. In unknown optimal multi-item auctions, CRegretNet achieves the best performance. In known optimal settings, it demonstrates near-optimal performance. Moreover, CRegretNet exhibits good generalization capabilities, demonstrating its adaptability to varying auction sizes and scenarios. The results suggest that CRegretNet is a promising approach for designing efficient and fair auction mechanisms in practice.

Object detection, image classification, and various other computer vision tasks have become prevalent on mobile devices. These computer vision tasks are typically executed with three stages: pre-processing, inference, and post-processing. Mobile SoC, serving as the computing unit on mobile devices, typically consists of heterogeneous processors like CPU, GPU, and NPU. However, during the execution of a computer vision task, current available frameworks only achieve the parallelism of CPU and GPU in the inference stage. While during pre- and post-processing, only CPU is used, leaving GPU and NPU on the SoC to be idle. For mobile applications that require low latency, the overhead of pre-processing and post-processing stages often account for more than 50% of the total latency, which becoming a performance bottleneck of the entire task. To reduce latency, it is imperative to fully utilize the idle heterogeneous processors (GPU, NPU) on the SoC and achieve heterogeneous processors parallelism in all three stages during execution. In this paper, we propose CoCV, a heterogeneous processor parallel computing system for computer vision tasks on mobile devices. In CoCV, we are the first to build an image processing operator library for heterogeneous parallel computing on mobile devices. Besides, we design a task allocation scheduling algorithm to guide the partitioning of processing tasks during execution, which ensuring a relatively balanced workload between different processors. A cross-stage operator chaining technique is also proposed to reduce the data sharing overhead among different processors during execution. We build a prototype system and evaluate it with different computer vision tasks. The results show up to 33% latency reduction for end-to-end tasks and 2.32× speedup compared with the current best solution. © 2023 IEEE.

software has become very important in everyday life. It is used in almost every field. Even in local society, the dependency level on software has also increased. Whenever there is a software failure, it might have severe consequences on society and individuals alike. Failure does not only affect the client but also the company that is responsible for the development. This study aims to explore the issues that face users and investigate the factors that cause software to fail. A questionnaire was built to derive the issues that users face and distributed using an online Google form across twelve organizations in Benghazi, Libya. In addition, ten interviews were conducted with twenty developers to identify the factors that cause failure. The most common factors among interviewees were identified, including unrealistic schedules and budgets, a lack of user involvement, and incomplete requirements. Finally some recommendations were provided to help engineers and development companies overcome those issues and reduce the failure.

The heterogeneous multicore system integrated with FPGA is a kind of Multi-Processor systems-on-Chip(MPSoC) that can achieve both efficiency and flexibility. FPGA uses hardware resource instead of instruction sets to process tasks. The resource on FPGA is limited which should be considered when scheduling tasks. We propose a static task scheduling algorithm targeting this kind of system. The aim is to minimize the executing time of an application as well as considering FPGA resource limit. In our genetic algorithmbased method, a chromosome consists of computing units where tasks are assigned. When generating the initial population, some tasks are assigned to FPGA, considering FPGA resource limit. We have modified the crossover operator and mutation operator to ensure that the FPGA resource used implied in chromosomes will not exceed the FPGA resource limit. Task scheduling is completed in the chromosome evaluation stage. Through the genetic algorithm, the improved task assignment and schedule sequence are obtained. The experiments on random graph applications and two real-world applications show that our method has achieved better performance than existing works.

The explosive growth of terminal devices at the network edge, coupled with advancements in communication technology, poses significant challenges to traditional cloud computing models. Despite Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) mitigating some issues by enabling real-time data processing closer to the source, it faces challenges with linear growth in computational resources insufficient to meet the exponential growth in service demand. Existing research utilizing software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), and Service Function Chain (SFC) technologies has made progress but still faces critical issues, such as the inability to respond in real-time to dynamic demands and inefficiencies in resource management strategies. This paper addresses these challenges by optimizing Virtual Network Function (VNF) deployment strategies in MEC environments. We propose PPO-ERA, a novel algorithm leveraging deep reinforcement learning and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) method. This approach provides real-time, adaptive, and dynamic deployment policies for VNFs, significantly improving both the average response delay of tasks and resource utilization. Key contributions include rigorous SFC-based application modeling, dynamic VNF deployment algorithms, elastic resource allocation, uniform state representation, and extensive performance validation. These advancements enhance the adaptability, efficiency, and performance of VNF deployment strategies, addressing critical challenges in dynamic MEC environments.

Recommendation systems have played a large role in the software engineering research landscape. Applications have ranged from source code elements, APIs and reviewer recommendations, with techniques borrowed from the Information Retrieval, and Machine Learning domains. In recent times, there has been work into a new method of interaction, which is ChatBots, especially for software engineering. Early work has been aimed at using bots for mining software repositories, providing task-oriented feedback for the software developer. In this work, we would like to take the ChatBots one step forward, but using them inconjunction with recommendation systems to provide an interactive experience for recommendations. As a case study, we focus on the existing reviewer recommendation systems, and propose how using a ChatBot may enhance the solution, to provide a more accurate and realistic recommendation for the practitioner. In the end, we highlight the potential and next steps to utilize ChatBots into existing software engineering recommendation systems.
