This article delves into heterogeneous computing systems, which employ multi-core processors (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) concurrently, facilitating efficient handling of resource-intensive tasks demanding substantial computing power. Industrial plants are adopting an increasing number of digital interconnected technologies that are enriched by several software applications. The IT/OT convergence offers several benefits in terms of efficiency and flexibility but it opens as many issues in terms of cyber vulnerabilities because industrial plants were not designed to be open to Internet. The frequency of successful cyber attacks shows that typical security solutions are inadequate to the novel complexity of industrial contexts. This novel scenario requires original approaches differing from traditional multi-layer networking solutions that are applicable just to rigid and stable infrastructures. We explore the applicability of Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) principles to the industrial context by designing, implementing and testing an integrated defensive solution. The results obtained through a working prototype show that it is possible to implement a Zero Trust identity-centric approach in an industrial context to increase the security and flexibility of the system while providing complete visibility over the entire network. The proposed approach can be used to strengthen legacy industrial systems that were designed for offline use, and to allow the adoption of innovative technologies that minimize the cyber risk for the overall infrastructure. © 2022 IEEE.

To maintain dependable and effective operation, especially in islanded microgrid situations, integrating distributed Generation (DG) units and renewable energy sources into electrical grids has required sophisticated control systems. In the present work a parallel connected DG integrates with solar PV, wind, and Ideal DC Voltage for an islanded microgrid with droop control technique has been proposed. This work used the improved droop control method for parallel-connected DG systems in islanded mode to ensure stable voltage and frequency of the system. The droop control technique, which has been around for a while in AC microgrid load sharing, has been improved to handle the issues of isolated network voltage and frequency stability. Droop coefficients are optimized as part of the proposed approach to improve dynamic responsiveness and reduce circulating currents between parallel inverters. The droop control technique controls voltage and frequency. A model of the proposed system has been modelled in MATLAB/ Simulink and results are verified under shifting load conditions and sources.

In general, energy sources and electronics loads are connected to DC microgrids via power electronic converters. However, interactions of these power converters may introduce instability issues into the system. One typical problem is the generation of the beat frequency oscillation caused by the minor differences of switching frequencies between power converters. This paper analyses the output terminal characteristics of the Boost converter, and a small signal model is built to analyse the beat frequency oscillation between two parallel-connected Boost converters. Based on the analysis, a hybrid method is proposed to alleviate the beat frequency oscillation. Simulation and experiments results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

The virtualization of AI chips ensures security in multi-user scenarios by partitioning the AI chip into multiple logically isolated instances. While each instance is independent in terms of computing resources, they share the same task scheduler, resulting in implicit competition for scheduler time slices which could in turn degrade overall performance. To address the problem, we propose vLFS, a deep reinforcement learning-based scheduling algorithm that opens up a new multidimensional optimization space for AI chip virtualization. vLFS schedules tasks from different instances by combining task load characteristics and the runtime status of the underlying AI chip, while also considering collaborative scheduling between the host and the device, thereby significantly improving AI chip utilization. We implement vLFS on a real-world system and conduct extensive comparisons against heuristic scheduling methods.

The cloud computing market is continually rising due to the digital transformation of business sectors, the adoption of information technology devices and the ease of access to the Internet. However, this rise has numerous challenges, including power consumption, customization, security, and compliance. Traditionally, power is generated using fossil fuels, which run the components of datacenters, such as servers, cooling, storage and network systems. Fossil fuels emit carbon dioxide, heat and other gases, directly impacting the environment. Therefore, cloud service providers (CSPs) seek environment-friendly solutions using renewable energy sources to run the datacenters. On the other hand, the datacenters' servers can host multiple customer requests by deploying virtual machines (VMs). The improper placing of the VMs in the servers of datacenters can lead to more energy consumption and increase the overall cost. Recent studies show that VM placement algorithms use renewable energy sources. However, they dispatch the VMs chronologically without considering the types of VMs and servers. This paper proposes a solar energy-based VM placement (SEVMP) algorithm for geo-distributed datacenters. The proposed algorithm dispatches the VMs to the corresponding servers based on their types (groups) and costs, such as power, brown energy usage and fragmentation. Moreover, it selects an appropriate VM from a set of VMs arrived simultaneously to minimize the energy consumption and the overall cost. The SEVMP is simulated by varying VMs, servers and datacenters. The simulation results of SEVMP are compared with four state-of-the-art algorithms to show its effectiveness in the average energy cost, the total energy cost and the number of accepted VMs. © 2023 IEEE.

In a micro grid, Voltage Source Inverters (VSls) are often used for all types of distributed generating interfaces with Emulator. When the utility fails, the micro grid's superiority is in its ability to power the local loads constantly. When the micro grid is in islanded mode, the VSls decide the micro grid's voltage and frequency;as a result, power quality might decrease under unbalanced and non-linear loads. Micro grids must be resilient in managing the local voltage and frequency, as well as safeguarding the network and equipment linked to the micro grid, in order to operate IoT (Internet of Thing) using parallel with the grid, as an autonomous power island, and in transition modes. Microgrid based Traditional energy generation methods, such as oil and gas are not valued in the modern era because they are major contributors to pollution and global warming. To address these issues, renewable energy generation is used in this method. Furthermore, the energy derived from renewable sources exhibits emulator behavior to overcome these issues, proposed method employs a variety of power electronic devices, including inverters, active LC filters, voltage regulators, power quality conditioners, and KY Boost converters. Among these power electronic devices, KY Boost converters are particularly effective for regulating DC voltage and increasing the efficiency of renewable energy systems. The output result topology plays a vital role for optimal operation and gives better efficiency in both hardware experimental setup and software simulation output. © 2023 IEEE.

Large parallel applications have heavily used MPI (Massage Passing Interface) collectives that support portable and efficient group communication operations. MPI_Bcast is one of the most commonly used MPI collectives that broadcast data to all processes of the communication domain. However, traditional software-based broadcast algorithms fail to fully utilize modern interconnection networks’ advanced features such as offloading collectives to the network hardware for efficient group communications. Besides, the semantic gap between MPI_Bcast and hardware multicast of underlying interconnects presents challenges for offload-based algorithms to accelerate MPI_Bcast for a wide range of message *** this paper, we propose a hardware-software co-design MPI_Bcast by efficiently leveraging the NIC-based collective offload provided by Tianhe-express interconnect, which completely precludes the involvement of CPU to accelerate message broadcast. We detail this broadcast mechanism that can be adaptively tuned to offload MPI_Bcast operations from the CPU to the NIC for various message and system sizes. In addition, we further propose a topology-aware broadcast design in conjunction with this offload method to significantly reduce the broadcast latency by constructing the optimal global inter-node communication tree. We implement and evaluate the proposed Tianhe-Express Offload-based Broadcast (TOB) design on Tianhe-2A and Tianhe-EP supercomputers. Extensive experiments have been conducted to evaluate TOB performance at both microbenchmark and application levels. Our solution offers up to 4.94x significant performance speedup at the microbenchmark level over state-of-the-art MPI libraries. For the application-level evaluation, our technique accelerates scientific applications by a maximum speedup of 1.34x.

Remote direct memory access (RDMA) networks are widely deployed in clouds and data centers for low latency and high throughput. Emerging applications like artificial intelligence training and serverless computing demand RDMA networks with high connection scalability. However, increasing connections can reduce throughput, as many academic research states. Conversely, some industry reports indicate the scalability issues are situation-specific. Despite this, existing work lacks a comprehensive analysis of RDMA scalability issue triggers and causes. In this paper, we revisit triggering conditions and underlying causes of RDMA scalability issues. First, we comprehensively analyze RDMA data flows and potential resource contentions, particularly with direct cache access. Second, we conduct extensive tests across varied measurement settings and RDMA NICs (RNICs). We identify triggering conditions including frequent switching of queue pair connections, rapid request posting, intensive memory access demands and inappropriate program configurations. We also systematically uncover causes of scalability issues, mainly due to RNIC cache misses, RNIC processing unit backpressure, host last-level cache misses, and software inefficiency. Finally, we provide guidelines to mitigate the RDMA scalability issues.

The protection and preservation of the privacy of personal data are one of the main requirements when it comes to an application dealing with the processing of such data. It is no different when it comes to information systems that store and process data about students in higher education systems. The public presentation of such data represents a serious threat to the safety of students as well as their status within the higher education system. For this reason, it is necessary to use the possibility of advanced technologies in order to raise data security to the highest level. One such technology that is able to provide transparency, security and data protection at a high level is blockchain technology. In this work, the Hyperledger Fabric distributed ledger private blockchain network was analyzed and its usability in terms of user rights management in higher education system was evaluated. Experimental analysis showed that such a platform has the ability to take advantage of private blockchain technologies in terms of user rights management and to provide security, flexibility and scalability of the system.
