MPT (Merkle Patricia Tree) is the core storage structure of blockchains as the integrity of the account state data can be verified by the MPT structure, which is the sum of the state information generated by the blockchain system based on the account model after the execution of a transaction. As the number of transactions increases, the amount of blockchain state data grows exponentially, which poses a huge challenge for efficient access to blockchain state data. In this paper, a new world state model is proposed to address this problem. Firstly, the organization mode of a full node and the total state is improved. A state tree is constructed for some states in blocks, and the organization mode and insertion mode of state construction are redefined. Then, the state storage mode is improved, which simplifies the state storage model and changes the full storage of tree nodes in the world state, and its state update and maintenance are introduced. Experiments show that the proposed model significantly reduces memory consumption and improves retrieval efficiency. When the number of transactions in a block is 1200, the query efficiency of our proposed model is three times of MPT. In terms of memory consumption, the memory consumption of our model is only 5% of MPT. © 2021 IEEE.

A real-time system is overloaded when all the tasks in a workload cannot meet their deadlines, and hence a robust algorithm is essential to maximize the number of tasks that meet their deadlines with the minimum number of miss rates and context switching. Although the Rate Monotonic (RM), Earliest Deadline First (EDF), and Least Laxity First (LLF) algorithms optimally perform and schedule tasks on a non-overloaded system, they have deficient performance when the system is overloaded. Therefore, we propose a new scheduling algorithm for uniprocessor and partitioned multiprocessor systems to address the overload situation. Since the proposed scheduling algorithm operates like EDF non-overloaded conditions, the proposed algorithm is optimal for non-overloaded systems. In addition, the proposed algorithm is robust against overloading situations as it executes the maximum possible tasks in the overload situation instead of missing deadlines of many tasks or burdening context switching to the system. The proposed algorithm allocates a processor to tasks based on the possibility of executing the task. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheduling algorithm maximizes the number of tasks that meet their deadlines in overload conditions without a domino effect and context switching. In addition, the proposed algorithm achieves the lowest miss rate without context switching and the highest efficiency and processor utilization in the overloaded system compared with RM, EDF, and LLF.

In the deep nano-scale regime, reliability has emerged as one of the major design issues for high-density integrated systems. Among others, key reliability-related issues are soft errors, high temperature, and aging effects (e.g., NBTI-Negative Bias Temperature Instability), which jeopardize the correct applications' execution. Tremendous amount of research effort has been invested at individual system layers. Moreover, in the era of growing cyber-security threats, modern computing systems experience a wide range of security threats at different layers of the software and hardware stacks. However, considering the escalating reliability and security costs, designing a highly reliable and secure system would require engaging multiple system layers (i.e. both hardware and software) to achieve cost-effective robustness. This talk provides an overview of important reliability issues, prominent state-of-the-art techniques, and various hardwaresoftware collaborative reliability modeling and optimization techniques developed at our lab, with a focus on the recent works on ML-based reliability techniques. Afterwards, this talk will also discuss how advanced ML techniques can be leveraged to devise new types of hardware security attacks, for instance on logic locked circuits. Towards the end of the talk, I will also give a quick pitch on the reliability and security challenges for the embedded machine learning (ML) on resource/energy-constrained devices subjected to unpredictable and harsh scenarios.

Dynamic voltage restorer based on cascaded H-bridge converter is the main topology of 10kV voltage sag mitigation device. Due to the use of a large number of power switching devices in the cascaded H-bridge converter, the probability of its failure increases. This paper first proposes a module operation state optimization strategy that is adjusted according to the voltage sags depth, which dynamically matches the corresponding number of submodules to work according to different voltage sags depths. On this basis, for the common open-circuit fault of single power semiconductor device, under shallow voltage sag, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control strategy based on n+1 redundancy to bypass the faulty H-bridge module and put the spare redundant module into operation when a fault occurs. Under deep voltage sag, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control strategy based on DC bias compensation, which makes the faulty H-bridge module seamless switch from full-bridge mode to fault-tolerant mode and output half of the rated AC voltage. This paper builds a simulation model in PLECS software to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Today’s scientific simulations are confronting seriously limited I/O bandwidth, network bandwidth, and storage capacity because of immense volumes of data generated in high-performance computing systems. Data compression has emerged as one of the most effective approaches to resolve the issue of the exponential increase of scientific data. However, existing state-of-the-art compressors also are confronting the issue of low throughput, especially under the trend of growing disparities between the compute and I/O rates. Among them, embedded coding is widely applied, which contributes to the dominant running time for the corresponding compressors. In this work, we propose a new kind of embedded coding algorithm, and apply it as the backend embedded coding of ZFP, one of the most successful lossy compressors. Our embedded coding algorithm uses bit groups instead of bit planes to store the compressed data, avoiding the time overhead of generating bit planes and group tests of bit planes, which significantly reduces the running time of ZFP. Our embedded coding algorithm can also accelerate the decompression of ZFP, because the costly procedures of the reverse of group tests and reconstructing bit planes are also avoided. Moreover, we provide theoretical proof that the proposed coding algorithm has the same compression ratio as the baseline ZFP. Experiments with four representative real-world scientific simulation datasets show that the compression and decompression throughput of our solution is up to 2.5× (2.1× on average), and up to 2.1× (1.5× on average) as those of ZFP, respectively.

Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication (SpMV) is a fundamental operation in a number of scientific and engineering problems. When the sparse matrices processed are large enough, distributed memory systems should be used to accelerate SpMV. At present, the optimization techniques for distributed SpMV mainly focus on reordering through graph or hypergraph partitioning. However, although the reordering could reduce the amount of communications in general, there are still load balancing challenges in computations and communications on distributed platforms that are not well addressed. In this paper, we propose two strategies to optimize SpMV on distributed clusters: (1) resizing the number of row blocks on the nodes for balancing the amount of computations, and (2) adjusting the column number of the diagonal blocks for balancing tasks and reducing communications among compute nodes. The experimental results show that compared with the classic distributed SpMV implementation and its variant reordered with graph partitioning, our algorithm achieves on average 77.20x and 5.18x (up to 460.52x and 27.50x) speedups, respectively. Also, our method bring on average 19.56x (up to 48.49x) speedup over a recently proposed hybrid distributed SpMV algorithm. In addition, our algorithm achieves obviously better scalability over these existing distributed SpMV methods.

Converging multiple form-factors and devices into one cohesive system is not necessarily a new idea; however, there has been a growing interest in achieving the design goal of convergence in recent years. This growing interest is due partly to a desire to maintain only one operating system. Some implementations also include the ability to run both in desktop mode and mobile mode simultaneously. These mobile systems attach to a lapdock or monitor via one or more cables to activate the desktop mode. These converged systems have mobile hardware constraints; however, current system on chip (SOC) improvements may make running these systems much more realistic. Several techniques are available to achieve convergence. This paper attempts to outline these design principles while also presenting an example architecture for using virtualization techniques to achieve operating system convergence. Additionally, this paper proposes a solution to attach the mobile device to the lapdock wirelessly using Bluetooth and Miracast, The virtualization techniques used to achieve this convergence can apply to various form-factors, application ecosystems, and computational platforms.

In recent years, the demand for artificial intelligence applications has increased dramatically. Complex models can promote machine learning to achieve excellent results, but computing efficiency has gradually reached a bottleneck. Therefore, more researchers are exploring the improvement of the efficiency of intelligent computing systems. distributed machine learning can improve the efficiency of model training and inference, but problems such as communication delay and load imbalance between computing nodes still exist. In the multi-GPU distributed computing environment, this paper takes the vision field algorithm VIT (vision transformer) as the optimization object, which has the advantage of convenient parallel training, and proposes several related solutions. Firstly, the parameter server is used as the system logic architecture and in order to reduce the idleness of the computing devices during the training process, the device working status query mechanism is designed to realize load balancing. Secondly, combined with the pre-trained small VIT algorithm model, semi-asynchronous communication method is proposed to reduce the communication overhead of computing devices and accelerate global convergence. The results of this experiment carried out in the existing distributed environment has demonstrated that compared with the existing synchronization method, the computational efficiency has been improved well under the premise of slightly reducing the accuracy. © 2021 IEEE.

The advent of the V3C system ("Verlegefähiges" (mobile and deployable) Compact Control Center), developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), marks a significant leap forward in satellite mission control technology. The demand for more flexible, scalable, and resilient mission control systems has become imperative as the space industry evolves. The portable V3C mission control system, designed to be operated on standard laptop computers, is an optimal solution that minimizes reliance on extensive ground infrastructure besides portable radio and antenna systems. The system's current development state encompasses routine tasks performed by mission control centers, covering the entire spectrum of operations, including mission planning, monitoring & control, flight dynamics, and payload data processing. This paper outlines the development efforts to enhance the V3C system, focusing on the resilience of satellite operations, multi-node and multi-tenancy capability, and private cloud functionality to enable seamless mission operations in conjunction and beyond the traditional control centers. We aim to design a decentralized autonomous system by developing a network of mobile V3C nodes in a redundant configuration, ensuring continued functionality even if a node fails. Additionally, the system allows for dynamic controller node reassignment to extend V3C's utility to scenarios that require mobile, efficient, and adaptable control solutions, such as disaster alleviation and security relevant missions. Further, we explore the applicability of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) techniques for the automated deployment of complete mission operations systems, enabling the V3C to perform complete satellite operations from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) laptops. The ambition extends to deploying V3C in a private cloud using IaC and open-source server virtualization, aiming to enable parallel operation of multiple stationary and mobile V3C instances for different projects and allow s
