Digital twins are increasingly utilized across various sectors, including industry and education, due to their significant advantages in our increasingly digital world. Particularly in education, digital twins offer interactive and comprehensive learning experiences. This paper explores the benefits of integrating digital twin technology into classroom settings and proposes a proof-of-concept application suitable for both in-person and online learning environments. The application aims to enhance student engagement by providing interactive tutorials and experiments with the ability to replay digital twin simulations. By offering real-time data observation alongside simulation-based learning, the application enriches the learning experience. Moreover, the paper also provides a brief literature review on the topic of digital twins in smart classrooms. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Current research on vehicle-pedestrian interactions focuses on the reaction of one actor other than the interaction of two actors, and considering the impact of the real-time behaviour of both actors on each other. To address this issue, the current study replicated a natural vehicle-pedestrian interaction to the virtual environment by connecting a high-fidelity driving simulator to a CAVE-based pedestrians' simulator. Behaviours from both actors in response to each other were observed indifferent situations including two crossing locations and five time gaps. The proposed method enabled simultaneous interaction in a controlled and safe environment as well as provided implications for future AV design.

Executing complex time series computations on mobile edge devices in general and augmented reality (AR) devices in particular enables a variety of novel applications. As the complexity of such computations typically exceeds the resources of the mobile device, the task may be offloaded to a remote server. However, the resulting delay of the response substantially impacts the user experience, especially for real-time applications. To overcome this delay, we propose a novel system in which client and server exchange forecasting models instead of simple values. This allows the server to forecast future input values and precalculate the corresponding output. New results can thus be predicted in advance and, considering the communication delay, arrive just in time on the mobile device. The lightweight forecasting models not only reduce the amount of data that needs to be communicated, but also local (mobile device) computation to a minimum. Our results show that we can achieve a medium euclidean distance (MED) error of 0.477 mm for bio-mechanical simulation visualizations, even in the presence of jitter and with a round trip time of 98 ms. Compared to regular offloading, we reduce the MED by 61 % and the number of transmitted messages by 81 %, while providing a better user experience.

The real-time simulation of high-resolution cloth is challenging. Speed, stability, and robustness are crucial for creating realistic physical animations at interactive rates. Hierarchical position-based dynamics (HPBD) is a cloth simulation method that focuses on real-time simulation. This article describes a new method that leverages the mesh hierarchy of HPBD to support level of detail (LoD) simulation and rendering. During the rendering of only low-resolution meshes, high-resolution simulation is paused until high-resolution rendering is required. Thus, cloth simulation can be performed effectively using LoD algorithms. The new method is demonstrated using various experimental animations. Both HPBD and LoD are widely used in real-time applications. Combining these two techniques may improve the performance and quality of real-time applications.

In modern construction project management, the adoption of advanced 3D technologies is becoming a pivotal strategy for improving interoperability and visualization in construction management practices. However, challenges arise when these 3D applications need to be seamlessly connected to any network to project real-time data obtained from different sources, such as IoT sensors, Federated and distributed simulation models, and cameras, as part of the Digital Twin concept. This study examines three prominent 3D applications—Blender, Unreal Engine, and NVIDIA Omniverse—as key components in a federated simulation framework as visualizer federates. The primary goal is to enhance construction project visualization efficiency within federated simulation. Blender, known for its open-source nature, simplifies data integration and model creation. Unreal Engine, famous for real-time rendering, offers an immersive and lifelike visualization experience. NVIDIA Omniverse, an extensible 3D platform, introduces collaborative design possibilities, facilitating real-time data exchange and interactive simulations for construction project stakeholders. However, challenges arise when integrating these applications into federated simulations using High Level Architecture (HLA). These challenges include creating application connectors to enable seamless data exchange with other platforms using modeling and simulation standards like HLA, as well as converting 3D models between different formats. This study systematically evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of these three applications and suggests strategies to address the challenges encountered during their incorporation into federated simulations. By comprehensively assessing their potential as visualizer federates and addressing data exchange and model compatibility issues, the research aims to fully harness these 3D applications as representative platforms for visualizing construction project status in a federated simulation. The increasing prevalence of Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things (CPS-IoT) applications and Foundation Models are enabling new applications that leverage real-time control of the environment. For example, real-time control of Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems can reduce its usage when not needed for the comfort of human occupants, hence reducing energy consumption. Collecting real-time feedback on human preferences in such human-in-the-loop (HITL) systems, however, is difficult in practice. We propose the use of large language models (LLMs) to deal with the challenges of dynamic environments and difficult-to-obtain data in CPS optimization. In this paper, we present a case study that employs LLM agents to mimic the behaviors and thermal preferences of various population groups (e.g. young families, the elderly) in a shopping mall. The aggregated thermal preferences are integrated into an agent-in-the-loop based reinforcement learning algorithm AitL-RL, which employs the LLM as a dynamic simulation of the physical environment to learn how to balance between energy savings and occupant comfort. Our results show that LLMs are capable of simulating complex population movements within large open spaces. Besides, AitL-RLdemonstrates superior performance compared to the popular existing policy of set point control, suggesting that adaptive and personalized decision-making is critical for efficient optimization in CPS-IoT applications. Through this case study, we demonstrate the potential of integrating advanced Foundation Models like LLMs into CPS-IoT to enhance system adaptability and efficiency. This document presents a design methodology for a telecommunications network with the IEC61850-7-420 standard, to support the processes required in Smart Networks and distributed Generation. By using powerful telecommunications network simulation tools such as OPNET and MATLAB, the main elements of a "smartgrid" are developed and modeled. This proof of concept simulates the behavior of a system with optimal dispatch and a response to demand in real time from which statistics are extracted that allow evaluating the possible implementation of the telecommunications system.

Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) is a simulation technique that captures model interactions in dynamic real-world application environments. ABMs may incur significant simulation times for large-scale business applications in the real world. A primary challenge is to reduce the simulation time while ensuring the functional correctness of the simulated application on the underlying hardware. This paper illustrates how a correct functional architecture of an application can significantly improve the application's simulation performance in terms of scalability and simulation time. We propose a metamodel to capture the communication patterns among various agents of an application deployed over ABM. This knowledge on learning communication patterns is used to design an optimally distributed software architecture for the application to minimize the number of messages communicated among agents. Further, we propose a performance model-based deployment of the architected application on the underlying hardware. We illustrate the efficacy of our approach with a use case from the telecom domain. We validate our results via detailed empirical analysis achieving a 517x gain for 1 million users in simulation time. We also scale to 50M users in barely 3.7 hours. The insights obtained from our experiments can serve as guidelines for system engineers, facilitating the process of scaling applications simulated using ABM simulators.

Stream processing is becoming increasingly important as the amount of data being produced, transmitted, processed, and stored continues to grow. One of the greatest difficulties in designing stream processing applications is estimating the final runtime performance in production. This is often complicated by differences between the development and final execution environments, unexpected outliers in the incoming data, or subtle long-term problems such as congestion due to bottlenecks in the pipeline. In this demonstration, we present an automated tool workflow for interactively simulating and exploring the performance characteristics of a stream processing pipeline in real-time. Changes to input data, pipeline structure, or operator configurations during the simulation are immediately reflected in the simulation results, allowing to interactively explore the robustness of the pipeline to outliers, changes in input data, or long-term effects. © 2023 Owner/Author(s).

Smart Transformer (ST)-based Meshed Hybrid Microgrids (MHM) present advantages concerning the performance of conventional AC-DC microgrids (MG). Integrating the ST in MHM and Optimal Power Flow (OPF) algorithms is a suitable alternative for managing microgrids with high penetration of distributed energy resources. Thus, equivalent models of converters associated with the MG and ST are required to facilitate the formulation and solution of the optimization problem. This paper proposes an equivalent power flow model in ST-based MHM to formulate an optimal power management algorithm for day-ahead operation. The management algorithm delivers the optimal operating points of each of the MG converters to allow power control on both the AC and DC sides. The feasible solution of the OPF is verified in a simulation model in Matlab (R) Simulink (R) and its implementation in real-time on the OPAL-RT platform to compare the results and validate the accuracy of the static models of the OPF. According to the tests performed, the accuracy of the ST equivalent model for Optimal Power Flow for day-ahead operation problems of MHM was verified based on Software-In-the-Loop (SIL) approach.
