Embedded real-time software construction has usually posed interesting challenges due to the complexity of the tasks these systems have to execute. Most methods for developing these systems are either hard to scale up for large systems, or require a difficult testing effort with no guarantee for bug-free software products. Although formal methods have showed promising results, they are difficult to apply when the complexity of the system under development scales up. Instead, systems engineers have often relied on the use of modeling and simulation (M&S) techniques in order to make system development tasks manageable. Construction of system models and their analysis through simulation reduces both end costs and risks, while enhancing system capabilities and improving the quality of the final products. M&S let users experiment with “virtual’ systems, allowing them to explore changes, and test dynamic conditions in a risk-free environment. This is a useful approach, moreover considering that testing under actual operating conditions may be impractical and in some cases impossible. In this talk, we will present a Modeling and simulation-based framework to develop embedded systems based on the DEVS (Discrete Event systems Specification) formalism. DEVS provides a formal foundation to M&S that proved to be successful for different complex systems. This approach combines the advantages of a simulationbased approach with the rigor of a formal methodology. We will discuss how to use this framework to incrementally develop embedded applications, and to integrate simulation models with hardware components seamlessly. One of the main aspects of the methodology is that it can be integrated with models of the environment in which the embedded controller will act. We will show how the Cell-DEVS and the QSS methods can be used for this task. We will introduce the main characteristics of the Cell-DEVS and QSS methods, and will show how to model physical systems. This paper proposes a distributed processing communication scheme for a real-time network application that provides interactive services for multiple users. In the proposed scheme, the application is processed on a data processing function in the distributed servers. The distributed servers are selected to maximize the number of in-service users as the first priority and to minimize the delay time at in-service users as the second priority. In this scenario such as interactive services, the application must work under the condition that an event occurrence order at the actual time is guaranteed. This leads to delay time on users' communication at wide-area networks. In the proposed scheme, an event occurrence order at the actual time is reproduced in the virtual time defined at each server. We formulate an optimization problem to select a suitable server having the data processing function as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. The ILP minimizes the number of excluded users because of violation of admissible delay as the first priority and minimizes the delay time for determining the virtual time as the second priority. The numerical results show that the delay time of the proposed scheme is reduced up to 50 percent than that of the conventional scheme.

The research is aimed at solving the problem of faster than real time distributed interactive simulation for large scale systems based on personal computer networks or workstation networks. The HLA services are integrated with the reflective memory networks and the sector minimization method are used in the study. An approach is proposed to solve the problem of faster than real time data transfer, ensuring the general speed of simulation and the speed of instantaneous synchronization for the large scale system simulation. A platform based on this approach provides interface services of which the call methods are the same as HLA. Using the platform, the existing HLA simulation systems can be conveniently migrated and new simulation systems can be developed and run in faster than real time.

We address the scalability of real-time Online interactive applications (ROIA) on Clouds. Popular examples of ROIA include, e.g., multi-player online computer games, simulation-based e-learning, and training in real-time virtual environments. Cloud computing allows to combine ROIA's high demands on QoE (Quality of Experience) with the requirement of efficient and economic utilization of computation and network resources. We propose a generic scalability model for ROIA on Clouds that monitors the application performance at runtime and predicts the load-balancing decisions: by weighting the potential benefits of particular load-balancing actions against the time and resources overhead of them, our model recommends, whether and how often to redistribute workload or add/remove Cloud resources when the number of users changes. We describe how the scalability is modelled w.r.t. to two kinds of resources - computation (CPU) and communication (network) - and how we combine these models together. We experimentally evaluate the quality of our combined model using a challenging multi-player shooter game as a use case. © 2016 ACM.

This paper describes the use of domain decomposition methods for accelerating wave physics simulation. Numerical wave-based methods provide more accurate simulation than geometrical methods, but at a higher computation cost as well. In the context of virtual reality, the quality of the results is estimated according to human perception, what makes geometrical methods an interesting approach for achieving real-time physically-based rendering. Here, we investigate a geometrical method based on both beams and rays tracing, which we enhance by two levels of parallel processing. Techniques from domain decomposition methods are coupled with classical parallel computing on both shared and distributed memory. Both optic and acoustic renderings are experimented to evaluate the acceleration impact of the domain decomposition scheme. Speedup measurements clearly show the efficiency of using domain decomposition methods for real-time simulation of wave physics. Copyright (C) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A source and load interactive system is an overall thinking and systematic study of the grid operation and control in the complex environment of interaction between power supply, grid and load. Source and Load interactive System takes advantage of advanced measurement, communication technology to aggregate distributed power supply, energy storage system, controllable load, such as different types of distributed energy, which utilizes advanced applications to achieve coordinated optimization operation of distributed energy and more reasonable optimal allocation and utilization of resources. However, due to a lack of unified information model and interface standards among all kinds of different application systems, it is difficult to create information communication standards, which results in a lot of difficulties in the integration of a variety of distributed energy and load interactive systems, and the monitoring and coordination management is also difficult to achieve. Based on IEC61970 standard, distributed generation, energy storage, the controllable load, and the electric vehicle charging are expanded by using the common information model(CIM), which can directly reflect distributed energy attributes of the source and load interactive system, such as total capacity, maximum power, real-time power of photovoltaic system, current state of energy storage system, etc. The extension of the CIM based on the economic dispatching of power distribution network side and the time domain simulation could lay the foundation of further research. © 2016 IEEE.

Quantum computing simulation through reduction and decomposition optimizations with a case study of Shor's algorithm

Because of the expansion of transformations and read/write memory states by tensor products in multidimensional quantum applications, the exponential increase in temporal and spatial complexities constitutes one of the main challenges for quantum computing simulations. simulation of these systems is very relevant to develop and test new quantum algorithms. In order to overcome the increase in simulation complexity, this work presents reduction and decomposition optimizations for the distributed Geometric Machine environment. By exploring properties as the sparsity of the Identity operator and partiality of dense unitary transformations, better storage and distribution of quantum information are achieved. The main improvements are reached by decreasing replication and void elements inherited from quantum operators. In the evaluation of this proposal, Hadamard transformations from 21 to 28 qubits and Quantum Fourier Transforms from 26 to 28 qubits were simulated over CPU, sequentially and in parallel, and in graphics processing unit, showing reduced temporal complexity and, consequently, shorter simulation time. Moreover, evaluations of the Shor's algorithm considering 2n+3 qubits in the order-finding quantum algorithm were simulated up to 25 qubits. When comparing our implementations running on the same hardware with language-integrated quantum operation, academic release version, our new simulator was faster and allowed for the simulation of more qubits. Ubiquitous computing and The Internet-of Things (IoT) raises rapidly in today's life and is becoming part of self-organizing systems (SoS). A unified and scalable information processing and communication methodology using mobile agents is presented to merge the IoT with Mobile and Cloud environments seamless. A portable and scalable Agent Processing Platform (APP) is an enabling technology that is central for the deployment of Multi-agent Systems (MAS) in strong heterogeneous networks including the Internet. A large-scale distributed heterogeneous seismic sensor and geodetic network used for earthquake analysis is one example, which can be extended by ubiquitous sensing devices like smart phones. To simplify the development and deployment of MAS in the Internet domain agents are directly implemented in JavaScript (JS). The proposed JS Agent Machine (JAM) is an enabling technology. It is capable to execute AgentJS agents in a sandbox environment with full run-time protection, low-resource requirements, and Machine Learning as a service. A simulation of a seismic network and real earthquake data demonstrates the deployment of the JAM platform. Different (mobile) agents perform sensor sensing, aggregation, local learning and prediction, global voting, and the application.
