Today, with the advent of computers and various easily accessible software packages, computer aided teaching tools have become an essential part of both classroom lectures and laboratory experiments in any kind of education curriculum. real time simulation tools, as a part of Electrical Machine Drives laboratory experiments, enhance lab experience by providing students with the opportunity to judge the performance of Electrical Machines in real time situations. This interactive learning environment, consisting of simulations, demonstrations and exercises, can fulfill the role of a bridge from passive learning to active engagement and thus stimulate deeper thinking;grounding a problem based-learning environment. The applications are also very important for relating theory to practice, so that the students can develop engineering judgment and understand how process behavior can be captured using real time simulations. Due to advancement of the software tools like MATLAB/SEVIULINK with its real time workshop(RTW) and real time Windows Target (RTWT), real time simulators are used extensively in many engineering fields, such as industry, education and research institutions. As a consequence, inclusion of the real time simulation applications in academic curriculum provides great learning value to the students. A case is made to present overview of the real time simulations of Electrical Machines Drives possibility of including these techniques in modern engineering educational curriculum. This paper will review the various real time simulation techniques such as real time Laboratory (RT Lab), Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) and Hardware in the Loop (HIL), which can be used in a modern engineering education. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper deals with the simulation of Clock Synchronization in Multi-Cluster systems that use FlexRay, a communication protocol designed by the FlexRay industry consortium in order to meet the fault-tolerance and dependability requirements of distributed real-time applications. Using SiMuFlex (simulation model for Multi-Cluster FlexRay Systems), we investigate the performance of the clock synchronization algorithm and determine the amount of the system precision which is a measure for the quality of the clock synchronization. The simulation experiments are focused on the evaluation of the convergence and stability of the clock synchronization algorithm when the clock drift rates of several nodes undergo systematic variations. Moreover, we investigate the impact of the blackout and delays on the gateway component which interconnects the system clusters. © 2011 24th international Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems 2011, ARCS 2011 - workshop Proceedings. The cyberinfrastructure supporting science appears will include large-scale simulation systems headed to exascale combined with cloud like systems supporting data intensive and high throughput computing, pleasingly parallel jobs and the long tail of science. Clouds offer economies of scale, elasticity supporting real time and interactive use and powerful new programming models such as MapReduce. We stress that iterative extensions of MapReduce will be necessary to get good performance on for several data mining (analytics) applications. We give several illustrations mainly from bioinformatics. We suggest that the data deluge implies a corresponding increase in the computational resources needed to support analysis and this suggests new architectures for large scale data repositories. © 2011 ACM.

The paper describes challenges identified while developing browser embedded 3D landscape rendering applications, our current approach and work-flow and how recent development in browser technologies could affect. All the data, even if processed by optimization and decimation tools, result in very huge databases that require paging, streaming and Level-of-Detail techniques to be implemented to allow remote web based real time fruition. Our approach has been to select an open source scene-graph based visual simulation library with sufficient performance and flexibility and adapt it to the web by providing a browser plug-in. Within the current Montegrotto VR Project, content produced with new pipelines has been integrated. The whole Montegrotto Town has been generated procedurally by CityEngine. We used this procedural approach, based on algorithms and procedures because it is particularly functional to create extensive and credible urban reconstructions. To create the archaeological sites we used optimized mesh acquired with laser scanning and photogrammetry techniques whereas to realize the 3D reconstructions of the main historical buildings we adopted computer-graphic software like blender and 3ds Max. At the final stage, semi-automatic tools have been developed and used up to prepare and clusterise 3D models and scene graph routes for web publishing. Vegetation generators have also been used with the goal of populating the virtual scene to enhance the user perceived realism during the navigation experience. After the description of 3D modelling and optimization techniques, the paper will focus and discuss its results and expectations.

This paper presents a versatile heterogeneous sensor network simulator library that incorporates an online power model for real-time resource management research projects. The library integrates a well-known multi-agent simulator library Swarm, a popular sensor operating system, TinyOS, and a sensor network simulator tool called TOSSIM. The motivation of designing our library is to address difficulties in studying large-scale wireless sensor networks with energy constraints. The library supports the non-linear energy model used in PowerTOSSIMz, but unlike PowerTOSSIMz, which only supports an offline post-processing battery simulation, our library provides an online energy model. Furthermore, the integration with Swarm enables rich features of the Swarm libraries such as run-time probes, pre-defined simulation environments, data collection and analysis tools, powerful random number generators, and graphical user interfaces. We also enhanced TOSSIM so that heterogeneous TinyOS applications can be executed on simulated sensor nodes. Furthermore, the same source codes that run on the simulator can be deployed on actual hardware sensor nodes supporting an easier hardware/software co-design. The resulting simulator library, SWARM-eTOSSIM, provides versatile visualization tools for diagnostic analysis and a development environment for heterogeneous applications with consideration of real-time energy constraints.

Since its inception in military systems two decades ago, distribution simulation has grown to provide a rich and varied family of technologies. During the same period, military requirements for distributed simulation have continued to evolve. The nature of warfighting today has shifted from focus on large, kinetic engagements to asymmetric warfare and stability/peacekeeping operations. As a complement to the three technical papers in this session, this talk will describe the presenter's experience in supporting military operations, using the distributed technologies associated with Battle Management Language.

Coalition Armed Forces have used simulations to enable training for some time and in recent years training through distributed simulations have been proven as a means to conducting training. This paper introduces a number of challenges in integrating Live, Virtual Constructive simulations for Training and introducing the Command and Control (C2) systems to provide mission planning and rehearsal capability as well as augmenting support to operations with real feeds from the wider battle-space network and operating picture. The paper will provide examples of current approaches, future architectures and technology trends that may hold an answer to the challenges of distributed training in defence.

Collaborative Augmented reality (CAR) systems allow multiple users to share a real world environment including computer generated images in real time. Currently, the hardware features of most mobile phones not only provide excellent multimedia services, but it also includes wireless network capabilities that provides a natural platform for CAR systems. However, the wide variety of these hardware features can have important effects on the performance of the mobile CAR applications. This paper presents the experimental characterization of CAR applications for mobile phones in regard to well-known performance metrics in distributed systems. Characterization results show that the most time consuming stage in a CAR application is the marker detection stage. Moreover, the rendering stage is decoupled on some devices. This decoupling process allows avoiding low refresh rate, facilitating the collaborative work. These results can be used as the basis for an efficient design of CAR systems and applications.

simulation-based decision support is an important tool in business, science, engineering, and many other areas. Although traditional simulation analysis can be used to generate and test possible plans, it suffers from a long cycle time for model update, analysis and verification. It is thus very difficult to carry out prompt "what-if' analysis to respond to abrupt changes in the physical systems being modeled. Symbiotic simulation has been proposed as a way of solving this problem by having the simulation system and the physical system interact in a mutually beneficial manner. The simulation system benefits from real-time input data which is used to adapt the model and the physical system benefits from the optimized performance that is obtained from the analysis of simulation results. This talk will present a classification of symbiotic simulation systems with examples of applications from the literature. An analysis of these applications reveals some common aspects and issues that are important for symbiotic simulation systems. From this analysis, we have specified an agent-based generic framework for symbiotic simulation. We show that it is possible to identify a few basic functionalities that can be provided by corresponding agents in our framework. These can then be composed together by a specific workflow to form a particular symbiotic simulation system. Finally, the talk will discuss the use of symbiotic simulation as a decision support tool in understanding and steering complex adaptive systems. Some examples of current applications being developed at Nanyang Technological University will be described.

OntoPlant is a virtual plant software package, which has been developed at Spatial Information Research Center of Fujian in Fuzhou University since 2002. The purpose of the software package is to provide an integrated software solution to realistic plant modelling, real-time scene rendering, growth simulation and applications at different scales from individual, stand (population, community) to landscape. Its key components are ParaTree, LSTree, VisForest, and ForestSIMA. The software package is implemented with VC, OpenGL Graphics standard, while ForestSIMA is also based on ArcGIS ArcObjects developer kit. ParaTree and LSTree are core of OntoPlant. They are used to build individual plant model. ParaTree combines geometric modelling and parameterized modelling. The shape characteristic of tree organ is depicted with a group of parameters, the values of parameters can be edited by interactive graphical parameter curve component tool. This tool provides friendly interface and intuitive interactive means, namely, what you see is what you get. The ParaTree can simulate realistic 3D plants at any age or season by modifying the parameters, pruning the tree. It is adaptive to simulate the architecture of tree. It doesn't require users to have much knowledge of biology. While the opposite is true for LSTree. LSTree is based on the theory of L-systems, which is faithful to the plant morphology and the physiological growth process. This system makes it possible to model the development of plants with efficiency and flexibility as a process of string rewriting. VisForest is a software platform for creating and editing 3D scenes. It allows the fusion of geospatial data (terrain, images) with 3D objects (plants and house) in a georeferenced environment, definition of 3D scene component, distribution density and form of plants. The ForestSIMA is an application designed to assist in landscape level analysis and planning of forest ecosystems by automating the tasks of stand project
