Today, with the advent of computers and various easily accessible software packages, computer aided teaching tools have become an essential part of both classroom lectures and laboratory experiments in any kind of education curriculum. real time simulation tools, as a part of Electrical Machine Drives laboratory experiments, enhance lab experience by providing students with the opportunity to judge the performance of Electrical Machines in real time situations. This interactive learning environment, consisting of simulations, demonstrations and exercises, can fulfill the role of a bridge from passive learning to active engagement and thus stimulate deeper thinking; grounding a problem based-learning environment. The applications are also very important for relating theory to practice, so that the students can develop engineering judgment and understand how process behavior can be captured using real time simulations. Due to advancement of the software tools like MATLAB/SEVIULINK with its real time workshop(RTW) and real time Windows Target (RTWT), real time simulators are used extensively in many engineering fields, such as industry, education and research institutions. As a consequence, inclusion of the real time simulation applications in academic curriculum provides great learning value to the students. A case is made to present overview of the real time simulations of Electrical Machines Drives possibility of including these techniques in modern engineering educational curriculum. This paper will review the various real time simulation techniques such as real time Laboratory (RT Lab), Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) and Hardware in the Loop (HIL), which can be used in a modern engineering education.

We introduce an integration framework applicable to different engineering applications which, with only minor code modifications involved, supports distributed simulations as well as visualisation on- the-fly and enables real time interactive computational steering. Furthermore, we present its integration into a previously existing pre-operative planning environment for joint replacement surgery, which makes possible an interactive patient-specific selection of the optimal implant design, size and position. The environment is supposed to enable the real-time surgeon interplay with virtual models of bones and implants in 3D, thus, simultaneous computation and visualisation of the load transfer between the bone and the implant. Moreover, we tackle the problem of long communication delays which occur in the case of rigid coupling of simulation back-end with visualisation front-end and handicap a surgeon in observing which of his modifications leads to which outcome.

This paper addresses the use of emerging technologies to respond to the increasing needs for larger and more sophisticated agent-based simulations of urban areas. The U.S. Joint Forces Command has found it useful to seek out and apply technologies largely developed for academic research in the physical sciences. The use of these techniques in transcontinentally distributed, interactive experimentation has been shown to be effective and stable and the analyses of the data find parallels in the behavioral sciences. The authors relate their decade and a half experience in implementing high performance computing hardware, software and user inter-face architectures. These have enabled heretofore unachievable results. They focus on three advances: the use of general purpose graphics processing units as computing accelerators, the efficiencies derived from implementing interest managed routers in distributed systems, and the benefits of effective data management for the voluminous information.

Dead Reckoning mechanisms are usually used to estimate the position of simulated entity in virtual environment. However, this technique often ignores available contextual information that may influence to the state of an entity, sacrificing remote predictive accuracy in favor of low computational complexity. A novel extension of Dead Reckoning is suggested in this paper to increase the network availability and fulfill the required Quality of Service in large scale distributed simulation application. The proposed algorithm is referred to as ANFIS Dead Reckoning, which stands for Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference Systems Dead Reckoning is based on a fuzzy inference system which is trained by the learning algorithm derived from the neuronal networks and fuzzy inference theory. The proposed mechanism is based on the optimization approach to calculate the error threshold violation in networking games. Our model shows it primary benefits especially in the decision making of the behavior of simulated entities and preserving the consistence of the simulation.

We propose a smart mirror system to display an augmented 3D representation of the user with makeup features. In this approach the user is able to view the possible outcomes of different makeup applications in the smart mirror without affecting the real face appearance in the process. The system incorporates 3D face construction, IR based face tracking and OpenGL material extensive rendering approach to deliver the augmented made-up face. We argue that by viewing the augmented grooming features the users will be able to flexibly decide the makeup products of their choice.

A real-time simulation grid for collaborative virtual assembly of complex products

simulation of collaborative virtual assembly (CVA) processes is a helpful tool for product development. However, existing collaborative virtual assembly environments (CVAE) have many disadvantages with regard to computing capability, data security, stability, and scalability, and moreover it is difficult to create enterprise applications in these environments. To support large-scale CVAEs offering high fidelity and satisfactory interactive performance among various distributed clients, highly effective system architectures are needed. In this paper, a collaborative virtual assembly scheme based on grid technology is proposed. This scheme consists of two parts: one is a grid-based virtual assembly server (GVAS) which can support parallel computing, the other a set of light clients which can support real-time interaction. The complex and demanding computations required for simulation of virtual assembly (VA) operations, such as model rendering, image processing (fusion), and collision detection, are handled by the GVAS using network resources. Users at the light clients input operation commands that are transferred to the GVAS and receive the results of these operations (images or video streams) from the GVAS. Product data are managed independently by the GVAS using the concept of RBAC (role-based access control), which is secure enough for this application. The key related technologies are discussed, and a prototype system is developed based on the web services and VA components identified in the paper. A case study involving a car-assembly workstation simulation has been used to verify the scheme.

A new approach of Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) simulation is being presented in this research work. Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) is planning to incorporate the concept of distributed interactive simulation (DIS) for Armoured fighting vehicle training simulators. DIS is an open standard for conducting real-time platform-level war gaming across multiple host computers. This is used worldwide, especially by military organizations and other agencies such as those involved in space exploration and medicine. In a distributed interactive scenario, there is a need for a centre node to forward data to the receivers based on their respective priorities. A protocol called Predict-and-Quantize for Priority with directed minimum Spanning Tree (PQPST) is used effectively to predict priorities for the receivers. The predicted priorities are quantized to build a significant distribution trees for effective utilization of network bandwidth. A case study was attempted by CVRDE using the existing Troop training simulator architecture to compare the performance analysis of PST and PQPST algorithms and the results are present in this paper. This study reveals that PQPST algorithm is more suited for utilizing the network bandwidth and reduces the latency to achieve the real time response in the training simulator. This study also helps for the robotic applications to select the appropriate route in an intelligent manner from the network distribution graph. © 2010 IEEE.

Most of the existing modeling tools and frameworks for embedded applications use levels of abstraction where execution and communication times of computational tasks are not captured. Thus, properties such as time and value determinism can be lost when refining the model closer to a target platform. The Logical Execution time (LET) paradigm has been proposed to deal with this issue, by enabling specification of platform-independent execution times of periodic time-triggered computational tasks at higher levels of abstraction. This chapter deals with modeling and simulation of embedded applications where LET requirements are specified by using the Timing Definition Language (TDL). TDL provides a programming model for time- and event-triggered components suitable for large distributed systems. We present specific TDL extensions that increase the expressiveness of the language, accommodating the needs of control applications such as minimum sensor-actuator delays. We describe simulation of TDL programs in datafiow models (using Simulink) and discrete event (DE) models (using Ptolemy II). We show how the Ptolemy II based simulation can be used to validate preservation of timing and value behaviors when mapping a DE model of an application with concurrent components into a sequential implementation platform with fixed priority preemptive scheduling.

As the number of wireless sensor network applications continues to grow, the need for specialized task scheduling mechanisms, aware of the sensor devices' capabilities and real-time resource availability, is becoming more and more apparent. In this paper, we therefore propose a generic model for task scheduling in heterogeneous networks, which we subsequently use to schedule distributed reasoning tasks, originating from a real-world WSN monitoring and management application. By means of simulation, we evaluate several developed scheduling heuristics and compare the results to an optimal solution of the same WSN task scheduling problem, obtained using ILP. Experiments show that our heuristics produce acceptable task schedules while maintaining a low resource footprint. © 2010 IEEE.
