HLA-based simulations can experience performance degradation due to communication latencies between simulation federates, which generate significant cumulative overhead. Even though the HLA standard provides mechanisms to decrease the misuse of network resources, it does not present any tool to diminish the communication latencies between interactive federates. Moreover, the interaction dependencies can be predicted before simulations are initiated, but such predictions relies on the determinism of simulations, producing erroneous balancing when simulations change their load dynamically. Thus, an hierarchical three-phase dynamic communication load balancing scheme is devised to react to run-time load changes, so the scheme performs constant, periodical monitoring of resources, re-distribution of load, and migration of federates. The balancing system reorganizes the distribution of large-scale HLA-based simulations, so the communication latencies are minimized, increasing the parallelism of the distributed simulations and leading to a performance improvement. Experiments were realized to measure the benefits of the scheme, and through comparative analyses, the balancing scheme presented considerable performance improvement to HLA-based simulations.

distributed Virtual Environment (DVE) has attracted much attentions in recent years due to the rapid advances in the areas of E-learning, Internet gaming, human-computer interfaces, and etc. Meanwhile, in recent years, the emergence of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) provides a more flexible and inter-operable framework for building more advanced DVE based applications. In such a background, service composition and management becomes a major concern, especially when considering an efficient QoS-aware load balancing scheme in the system. In this paper, we propose and implement a QoS-aware adaptive load-balance algorithm that aims to provide dynamic and adaptive load-balanced service composition and management in a JXTA-enabled P2P network based DVE. We compare our algorithm with other commonly used schema in P2P network, and find that ours outperforms the others in many aspects by a series of real-time distributed simulation experiments in a dynamic service-oriented P2P network.

In large, real-time interactive distributed systems such as distributed simulations and Multiplayer games, Interest Management (IM) is often implemented using a cell-based paradigm. In such a paradigm the subscription patterns of interactive clients are mapped on to some set of disjoint regions or cells which are typically hosted within a routing network made up either of dedicated machines or of the clients themselves. These systems often incorporate some mechanism for balancing the load placed on this routing network, on the assumption that interests over this population of cells will be non-uniform. Using a set of reference models for cell-based IM systems found in the research corpus, we evaluate the extent to which this phenomenon takes place. In this paper, we propose a hybrid Testbed enabling Run-time Operations for Wireless network applications (TROWA). TROWA is a wireless network emulator and its simulation core is based on the network simulator Mobireal. TROWA can emulate packet transmissions in multi-hop wireless networks in real-time, with realistic mobility models of urban pedestrians. Also it provides APIs that allow real stations to connect with their simulated networks with a little modification of applications and protocols. One of the significant features of TROWA is the control interfaces to manipulate the movement of simulated nodes during the execution of applications. This enables performance analysis and algorithm validation in an efficient way. Additionally TROWA can improve the accuracy of real-time simulation by prioritizing the simulation events. By several experiments for a VoIP application, we show the usefulness of TROWA.

The modelling and simulation of autonomous pedestrians has important applications in real-time crowd and crisis simulations. With the increase in processing powers and dedicated graphics cards, more processing powers can now be allocated for the generation of realistic behaviours for individuals within the crowd. We have proposed a representation for autonomous agents that is aimed to generate some human-like behaviours. In particular, to generate smooth and realistic navigational behaviour such as human-like collision avoidance, we have also proposed a two tier navigation model for autonomous agents. Using the proposed model, a scene in a typical shopping mall has been created. Behaviours such as crowd avoidance and lane following have been observed from the simulation.

The Test and Training Enabling Architecture (TENA) supports the rapid, reliable, decentralized and collaborative development of applications for large-scale, high-performance, distributed, real-time and embedded systems. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) uses TENA for distributed testing and training, combining the use of real sensor systems with data from virtual and constructive simulations. Such systems arc called live, virtual and constructive (LVC) systems. The resulting data must be exchanged in real-time with high-performance. Most of the simulations and sensors are inherently distributed, typically over a large geographic area. The developers working to support the ranges are themselves geographically distributed, may never have met each other and do not report to a common authority. Nevertheless, these developers must collaborate to execute a joint testing or training event. At the core of TENA, the TENA Middleware delicately weaves together a unique combination of model-driven, code-generated software with high-level, easy-to-understand programming abstractions and an AN designed to detect programming errors at compile-time rather than run-time, where the cost of an error could be extremely high. TENA provides re-usable standardized components to simplify the development of TENA applications. TENA features a flexible and extensible TENA Object Model Compiler (OMC) which can automatically generate example programs, test programs, and gateways to legacy systems with older less sophisticated software architectures such as distributed interactive simulation (DIS) and the High-Level Architecture Run-time Infrastructure (HLA/RTI). None-invasive scanning technologies, such as MRI, have greatly enhanced our ability to 'image' the internal body, however the resultant visualisation is often difficult to comprehend due to both inadequacies in the scanning process and sub-optimal approaches to visualisation and data representation. These factors impose significant cognitive load on the user, requiring skill and experience to accurately comprehend the detail of the data, and intense concentration, in less experienced users, to understand the structures present. This research aims to improve the users' ability to comprehend and explore the scanned data sets, through a combination of enhanced data processing and effective 3D visualisation that will seek refined representational paradigms to intuitively convey meaning to the user. This is achieved in a real-time 3D exploration environment, utilising recent developments in graphics hadware, which enables the user to both refine the visual representation and effectively explore the data set, thereby defining a prototype for enhanced medical visualisation and exploration. Ultimately this will improve diagnosis, procedural planning and most importantly communication, both between medical clinicians and the patient themselves.

In distributed virtual environments, e.g., online gaining, collaborative designs and distributed military simulations, interactivity is one of the most important requirements. The users may notice serious degradations in quality of service when interacting in the virtual world if the response from the system is much slower than what they have experienced in real life. hi this paper, we consider the problem of placing distributed servers in the network to reduce client-server communication latencies, which is termed the server placement problem. We proposed two new network-aware placement algorithms which take into account users' locations in the network and connectivity at the Autonomous System level to determine good sites for servers. Extensive experiments with realistic network models showed that these new algorithms significantly outperform existing approaches that require full knowledge of network connectivity at the router-level topologies.

This paper describes the implementation of an intelligent application layer gateway for the traditional training simulator to connect with other simulators using the High Level Architecture (HLA). The HLA is the latest open distributed interactive simulation standard developed by the Defense Modeling and simulation Office of the US Department of Defense. To reap the full benefits of simulation interoperability and reusability in the near-term, it is important to quickly transit the legacy training simulators to compliant with the HLA. However, the programming philosophy between traditional training simulator and HLA-compliant simulator is different. To shorten the system rebuild time and avoid altering the original functions of the simulator, the proposed application layer gateway handles all the run-time infrastructure services within the HLA and communicates with the simulator by using the shared memory. To verb the feasibility of the proposed intelligent gateway and its performance, a real-time flight platform was developed. The platform includes a real-time flight model, a software control panel and an image generation system. The experimental results showed that our approach is workable and practical.
