The Department of Defense is developing a Global Information Grid (GIG) that provides its users with a seamless, secure, and interconnected information environment to meet real-time and near-real-time needs of the warfighter. Several communities of interest exist in support of GIG application thrusts, including a Modeling and simulation Community of Interest (M&S COI) that focuses on applications enabling improved common operating environments for providing combat support, Command and Control, intelligence, and combat service support. RAM Laboratories, in conjunction with the Air Force Research Laboratory, is developing a DSAP (Dynamic Situation Assessment and Prediction) Software Infrastructure that will address the needs of the GIG M&S COI by leveraging computing resources across a distributed grid to provide a dynamic planning and analysis capability through the simulation of desired Courses of Action and alternative plans while calibrating its analysis process with the real-time operational picture. The DSAP Infrastructure distributes simulations using JSAF for predictive analysis, and subscribes to C4I data via TBMCS for providing the real-time operational picture in order to evaluate plans and alternatives. This paper will discuss the status of the DSAP Infrastructure and provide a roadmap for enhancing the DSAP Infrastructure with features to work with Network Centric Enterprise Services (NCES) in a Service Oriented Architecture. The paper will discuss how the DSAP Communications Infrastructure can be augmented with publish/subscribe functionality in order to address net-centric concepts by enabling processing nodes to (1) publish data or information, (2) subscribe to published data or information, and (3) support query on demand operations for posted data. The paper will discuss how TBMCS updates (and its subsequent replacement services) can be provided to the DSAP Infrastructure as a web service in a SOA. © 2005 The MITRE Corporation. time synchronization has always been a critical deciding factor of whether interoperating simulation models using the high level architecture (HLA) is achievable efficiently. In this paper, we propose a conservative time synchronization algorithm that makes use of the manufacturing process flow information (a sequence of steps production lots flow through) in the computation of the request time. This time is used by the simulation federate to issue requests to advance time to the HLA runtime infrastructure (RTI). The proposed algorithm monitors the simulation events that potentially trigger external timestamp messages at the exit step and j processing steps before this exit step as well as simulation events that extend the timestamp of external messages. We evaluated the performance of this algorithm using a Borderless Fab simulation model on the AutoSched AP. The experimental results show that the algorithm performs much better than a straightforward use of the RTFs time synchronization, and the further back we went in looking at the processing steps, the better the execution time that was achieved.

Test generation is a highly complex and time-consuming task. In this work, we present a distributed method for combinational test generation. The method is based on a hybrid approach that combines both deterministic and genetic approaches. The deterministic phase is based on the D-algorithm and generates an initial set of test vectors that are evolved in the genetic phase in order to achieve high fault coverage in a short time. The algorithm is parallelized based on a cluster of workstations using the message passing interface (MPI) library. Several benchmark circuits were attempted, and favorable results comparisons are reported.

The grid, or grid computing, provides a new and unrivalled technology for large scale distributed simulation as it enables collaboration and the use of distributed computing resources. Last year at DS-RT 2004 a panel was convened to consider the impact of the grid on distributed simulation. Four members presented their views of this area and together they tried to identify the main research issues involved in applying grid technology to distributed simulation and the key future challenges that need to be solved to achieve this goal. These challenges included not only technical ones, but also social ones such as management methodology and the development of standards. This year we revisit this fast changing technology and ask the questions: 1) What major changes has grid computing had over the past year?; 2) How can distributed simulation and related applications benefit from grid computing?; 3) What are the barriers to this?; 4) Are there alternative new technologies that would be a better ROI for distributed simulation than grid computing?.

In a distributed embedded system, data items may be moved from one set of functional modules to another through a common buffer that is interposed between them over a network. Here, the computation modules disseminating data should agree on what data items are written into the remote buffer, to coordinate their actions on the external environment. Furthermore, a timely effect of these actions requires enforcing deadlines on the processing of data from the remote buffer. To meet these requirements, we provide a publish-subscribe style programming structure that enables a shared view of the processing on data in the buffer by various computation modules over prescribed time intervals. Our structure allows an explicit application-level control of the asynchrony and timing of information flow between various modules. Its use is illustrated with a case study of a target tracking application. In general, our programming structure can be useful in a variety of embedded software systems such as shared e-desks and collaborative Web services.

Engine production is a complex process that requires the manufacturing and assembly of a wide variety of components to create a varied product mix. simulation plays a key role in the planning process of a new production line to determine if it can meet expected demand. However, these simulations can be very time consuming and can often take up to a day to execute a single run. This paper investigates how distributed simulation based on the IEEE 1516 High Level Architecture and the emerging standard COTS simulation Package Interoperability Product Development Group (CSPI-PDG) Type I Interoperability Reference Model could be used to reduce the time taken for a single simulation run. CSP interoperability and the problem of integrating CSPs with HLA software (the runtime infrastructure) are presented. New prototype benchmarking software, the COTS simulation Package Emulator (CSPE), which is being developed to investigate distributed simulation problems, is discussed. The paper then develops a case study of how this was used to investigate the feasibility of using distributed simulation at Ford. The paper discusses results obtained from this case study and suggests that distributed simulation could indeed be beneficial to Ford.

The paper deals with providing a specification methodology to enable flexible monitoring in large scale distributed information systems (DIS). The goal is to allow the monitoring of compliance to properties deemed as critical for functioning of a DIS. Since information attacks due to external intrusion and/or component failures often manifest as deviations from critical behaviors expected of a DIS, a violation of compliance to a specified critical property can be viewed as symptomatic of information attacks. Based on this principle, users can prescribe critical properties in the form of event predicates, which are Boolean conditions on the externally visible interface state distributed among computation nodes and can be detected by distributed algorithms. Our specification methodology manifests in two facets: i) designing a meta-language which allows the interface behavior of a system to be prescribed through possible occurrences of events in the external environment; and ii) incorporating the specification language into a programming interface that exposes the computation-level states symbolizing the occurrence of events. Any target application can then plugged-in to the generic monitor tool to test for its compliance to critical functionality requirements. The realization of monitor in distributed object-oriented programming languages (such as JAVA) reduces the software development costs of implementing a DIS: due to the ease of specification, development and maintenance of the DIS.

Considering the constant increase of network traffic, and existing bandwidth limitations, caching Internet objects is an essential technique to improve the provided quality of service and to reduce the network load. Caching is particularly helpful for video objects due to their interactive nature, large size, long playback duration, real time constraints, and typically variable bit rate. Several caching schemes for video streams have been proposed in the literature. The performance of the existing methods generally degrades in applications like video on demand where random access is common. In this paper a new two tiered proxy caching scheme for random access applications has been proposed. The proposed design consists of two layers: the cache layer and the fetch layer. The cache layer divides the incoming video stream into small segments, and selects the segments that should be cached based on their current access probability and the utility they provide. The fetch layer organizes the outgoing requests according to the priority it assigns to them. simulation results indicate that the proposed technique outperforms existing caching schemes when random access is significant. The provided utility is up to three times better than the existing solutions.
